Just curious - What is the citizenship of a child born to an Australian? Surely it would be dual citizenship for said daughter?

Nice work done by the US Ambassador to the UN. Her 'performance' over the sad shooting of Syrian soldiers by the US and likely Australia has meant that sympathy for Russia has been engendered.

A first for me.Posting from AY089.
No audio on my seat, route map not working, cameras only showing a flashing red light in the darkness.
So nothing else to do but post away whilst trying to drink them dry.

That the new A350 playing up already?

I expect you would need to register your daughter before Medicare will pay anything. And you would need family cover not single. Because kids are always needing something. But that's a personal choice. If you considered that you personally needed private health insurance then I would think that you feel the same about your family. The good news is that family cover also includes your wife.
My daughter will be registered as soon as I can get through this nightmare.

Keep in mind JohnK that until your wife and your baby are citizens, they will need "overseas visitor" cover regardless of Medicare. (assuming wife is Thai and not Australian citizen yet)
Daughter will be Australian citizen soon.

Very wise info. Medicare does not have a reciprocal health agreement with Thailand.
Wife will have travel insurance cover until temporary/permanent residency in a few years time.

Does anyone have an idea of the potential tax liability of taking over a house from a deceased estate, holding it whether it is rented or not for a longer than two year period ?
I do know that if you sell it under 2 years from date of death, there is no tax liability.
Any thoughts? And if capital gains is payable, from which date would the tax office use?

Your CGT is based on your acquisition date. Did you inherit or buy? The estate pays any CGT liability if it was rented by the owner and that tax would be based on their acquisition date and % of time it was rented and the base tax level of the original owner.

Indeed it was.I was the third J pax to report no audio.
And in the "tourist" cabin as it was announced the IFE was a total failure and had to have a reboot meaning all J pax missed out on 25 minutes anyway.
The Safety video also would not play.

As long as one of the parents is an Australian citizen at time of birth then you can apply for citizenship for the child. The child can have dual citizenship.

House inherited equally by two siblings. Then one sibling bought the other out. The house purchaser now has this two year window from date of death. So if the transfer from the estate occurred today, then CGT would be liable from today provided it would sell after 2 years. That's my take on the situation. Selling it before 2 years incurs no CGT.

Another thing, CGT dimishes by 50% if you hold an asset for longer than 12 months does it not? In this case, it would obviously be 2 years OR MORE.

Or even triple.Granddaughter born in the USA,father Australian, mother English. So she has 3 passports.

And a silly question from a total newbie. Is it enough to have Medicare cover only for daughter? I'd hate to think what would happen to my already $100+ Medibank private single premium should I include my daughter. The GP she will visit bulk bills.

When you get the time it might be worth doing some research into private health... some funds offer benefits for children such as waiving the hospital excess for example. Another way to reduce costs is to look at your extras if you have them... do you really need them? They are expensive and you might be able to get things like glasses and basic dental (teeth clean) cheaper just by paying outright for the one or two times a year you might need them. Finally, shopping around can also reduce premiums... the health fund I've been with for 25 years offered to give me one month free (forever) once I rang to say I was going to move to another fund.

All I want to do is pay the ATO for the IAG due this week. And of course, MYOB wont let me access the online file unless I update it, today. Worked fine on Friday. Thirty minutes later I am still waiting for MYOB to download, install and re-open. All I need now is for the ATO portal to have a java update before I can log on.

Isn't technology great!

It gets worse. Got the message it couldn't be installed because I need to update something called 'net framework'. So had to restart the computer and roll back. And am now back to the original problem of not being able to open MYOB. Bloody hell.

.NET framework should install via Windows Updates, if not then you can do it manually. Application dependencies can always be a pain...

Ah, those pesky windows updates. Seems to be fixed now after a phone call to MYOB. Love it when the auto telephone prompt asks you for serial number which of course you can't give because you cant open up the software and the nagging voice keeps saying "sorry we did not get your serial number". Groan.

Go back thirty years Pushka and pretend you would be saying that to some of your dinner friends.

I think they would have thought that you tucked into a bottle of Blue sapphire gin before the party started. Java, Indonesia, myob compared to a jobbo.

My oh my times have changed haven't they.

But at least you're laughing and getting those endorphis going.

....

My oh my times have changed haven't they.

We were talking about that last night while watching some doco on a new cruise ship doing the South Hampton to NY route, the same route as the Titanic we were told about a dozen times.

The guys were in the engine room, all wearing white overalls and looking at computer screens.

Me: Can you imagine talking to the Titanic coal/steam engine guys, saying one day you will be sitting in a air con room in white outfits, looking at computer screens.

Hubby: You would have to explain what a computer screen is first.

Indeed. You gotta laugh or you cry. I did suggest to MYOB that their timing was pretty rank with ATO returns due. Apparently when MYOB decides to do an upgrade they completely revoke the functionality of the pre existing version meaning it is no longer functional at all.

One thing this will do, looking on the bright side, is prevent a pesky director being able to access MYOB - he is much younger than me, is an accountant but technology defeats him and I reckon I know more about accounting than he does, based on his previous advice. Thankfully we have an external accountant who is very good, and knows to come to me with issues.

But - I used to consider myself a geek girl. I would change the operating system of my devices (ie root them, what a US centric term) and install hacked operating systems to make them play better. But technology is starting to get the better of me and I no longer feel like playing with it.

And as for ITUNES - I HATE Itunes but love the devices apple makes.

Speaking of ITunes, is anyone else having issues with it at the moment - ie the itunes store on the phones/ipads. Some weird stuff has been happening today, I never use the icloud but it is saying I accessed it today. And then an update for an app on the phone wouldnt download as it said my password was wrong.

Advise parents to search "FATCA". Note that US income liability is based on citizenship - not residence. Unless there is a very good reason to the contrary, renouncing the USA (given Australian/English already) may be desirable. Note: one of my English (well actually Welsh) friends has intimate experience in this by virtue of marriage to a US citizen.

Happy wandering

Fred
