MrsGM bought a little slide to digital file converter from Aldi yesterday. So I've been going through dad's slides from the mid to late 60s. Never seen any of them before, and as far as I know they haven't been looked at by anyone in decades.

Some remarkable stuff so far, although obviously mostly only of personal interest. But at least a couple pics from a visit to the Albany whaling station back when it was still operating. Eye opening.
what was the price, and how's the jpeg quality looking like on the computer screen? got a few slides in the odd shoe box.

Only about $50. Quality is average to decent, but then the slides play a role in that I'm sure. For more money you can get a more flashbang type scanner which is bound to provide better images.
Here's one of the old man in Borneo I think. 1966 the date from memory. Pic quality ok I thought.

How wonderful!

My husband did this a few years ago with slides and old movies - a very nice trip down memory lane.

Sad that future generations wont know what its like to flick through old photos or to lift old lino and find old newspapers underneath

It's funny how we accept news stories and articles about subjects we don't know much about as more or less correct but as soon as it's about something we know it's full of wild inaccuracies. It makes me wonder about how accurate anything in the news actually is.

GarretM, many years ago when my husband's mother passed away, we found very few photos of her, and her husband (who had passed away when my husband was 18) together. I scoured the house (I was an Executor) and found just a couple.

I think this is one of the reasons I am fanatical about organising my photos on every one of my devices, and have them all catalogued. I carry my life around on my phone and reckon I look at one of the 10,000 and growing photos on it everyday.

When my husband was copying film to CDs/hard drives, he found a road trip with is brothers and they drive into a petrol station and you hear younger brother in law saying, "What a rip off! FIFTY THREE CENTS PER LITRE!"

Case in point... article in paper today about a Chinese couple who missed their flight and ran onto the runway to stop the taxi-ing plane. Most of the photos supported the story... except for the last one taken from a different angle which still showed the plane at the gate and only having moved about a yard off it's park spot.

I've not believed things that you read in newspapers are necessarily true since 1969 when I read reports of an incident where I was a witness. What I read in the SMH had absolutely nothing in common with what I saw.
Then again I continue to be amazed at those believing Twitter to be a reliable source of news.

Social media is an important tool for giving a 'heads-up' on emerging issues. Accuracy can be checked, but if there's a story developing, social media is likely where you'll hear it first these days.

Still doesn't make it a reliable source of the truth.

Was that the Apollo moon landing????:)

For those who have been following the developing story: Tonight's dinner was chocolate biscuits in the car as I drove away from my old home to my new home. The removal van will be leaving at sparrows tomorrow morning to get here about 10am. After today's fun of packing and loading I get a follow up fun day of unloading and unpacking! My mother is coming to visit tomorrow to help. Gotta love mums.

Now just have to hope that when I get the keys tomorrow the gas, electricity, phone, internet, Foxtel are all working!

Sleep now.

Die-ah-peh.

New word for me. It would appear it's much easier to get adult nappies than it is to get nappies for a newborn.

What prompted my post was an interesting story in that august journal, the Guardian, which is supposed to have some standards. It was about a new 'contraceptive' for rat control developed by these two women researchers in the USA. Overall the article was pretty good where it just reported what researchers said but when the journo claimed that in the 1970s DDT "the active ingredient in Agent Orange" was used for rat control I had to shout at the screen. For one, DDT has a pretty high LD50 for rats so it would take a LOT of chemical to kill them and you'd have to force it down their throats. And of course Agent Orange was NOT DDT. Agent Orange was 2,4,5-T, a defoliant (herbicide) and nothing to do with DDT. DDT is an insecticide and not as bad as everyone thinks toxicity and carcinogenicity wise. The problem with it was that it built up in vertebrate systems like most organochlorine pesticides which are now all banned here.

Anyway there were a few more howlers and questionable statements but the rest was fine!
(I noted they later deleted the reference to Agent Orange).

Oh. Groan. I feel your pain.
Do you think there were any red flags from last year? Unusual activity (not unlawful, just out of the norm for you?)
