The totally off-topic thread

Tuesday is just another workday where we stop for about 5 minutes.....my horse generally takes his/her time to get to the finish line at the 3,200 metre mark so I allow the additional 2 minutes for it to win the coughy prize.

I won't be putting a bet on this year, but if I was I'd be backing Exospheric. And/or Almoonqith. You heard it here first.

I am working at my Flemington office tomorrow.:cool:

Not sure which Champagne house is sponsoring us this year (or we are sponsoring with our wallets?!), but no doubt I will be called upon to offer some expert quality assurance advice.

And some of us are very happy to work tomorrow noting we're taking TIL instead of double time. Another day of leave to take in the future. :)

Gotta love those antiquated union negotiated EBAs.

Let's pay everyone double because there is a horse race. That totally makes economic sense...

Good deal for you Hvr. Which horse should I invest your "double time" in?

Foolish to try to rank horses from different eras Johnny - but she is certainly a legend.
Legend no doubt.

Phar Lap, Tulloch, Kingston Town.

In my opinion Kingston Town is still the benchmark. To win a 1200 metre race in 1m12s, a 1600 metre race in sub 1m36s, win 3 Cox Plates against quality opposition, 2 Derbys (should have been 3 Derbys) and also a 3200 metre race and should have won another if not for a freak ride/run on the rails. That's all the hallmarks of a champion

Then there are horses like Gunsynd, Vain, Luskin Star, Manikato and many more who are also up there. And how about Dulcify? We'll never know how good he will have been. And one who doesn't get talked about much. Red Anchor. Could have been anything but broke down early.

Good to reminisce. We all have our favourites.

If I was at home, I'd be working on my business (by choice), but alas the universities do not recognise state holidays.

I remember having university exams on Cup Day way back in the dark ages. Amusingly Monash University hold their exams at Caulfield Racecourse, in the [not then used] grandstand.

Melbourne Uni used to hold theirs at the Showgrounds....

Actually nothing to do with Union EBAs. It's the law, refer to the Victorian Public Holidays Act 1993.

Damned pesky having a law that says we'll have public holidays. It ruins businesses everywhere.

That particular law doesn't dictate the pay provisions on its own, it just lays out the entitlement to have the day off.

In any case, I was the beneficiary of the combination of such laws and EBAs during my uni days (this is long before the current FWA). By choosing to work on weekends and public holidays I increased my income substantially.

Regrettably no such benefits now, although everyone in our company officially has all public holidays off.

I have no problem whatsoever with Cup Day being a gazetted public holiday - 99% of the population stop and listen to or watch the Cup being run - I would suggest no other public holiday has anywhere near the concentration on the event that is actual reason for said public holiday. Anzac Day - maybe.

I do have serious concerns about the Monday being lumped in as if it is a god given right. And YES we have staff who are taking the day off - they know my views.

It makes as much economic sense as paying all those people that are having a day off for a horse race....

Yeah, we all need to get paid, so we can lose our money on the horses... Duh!

I think it is okay if people take TOIL or annual leave on the Monday so they can plan a long weekend.

Taking a sick day without actually being sick is poor form.

Sick leave is an important workplace entitlement but should only be used when you are actually "sick". The definition of sick can be quite broad (e.g. include mental health), but laziness is not a reason valid illness.

Why is it on a Tuesday?
Tradition - 1st Tuesday in November since Adam was a boy - 3 days after Victorian Derby and McKinnon Stakes which were traditionally 2 of the major lead in races - to have it on Monday just would not give the horses that race on Saturday sufficient recovery time.

Why is it on a Tuesday?

So you can have FOUR days off !!! ;)

LOL, it has been on a Tuesday for many years.

The "cup carnival" actually goes for 8 days with the race days roughly equally spaced (Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). This gives the horses (and the people) some time to rest.

ok, clearly I am not a racing fan although I did pick an outsider to win the Melbourne Cup one year at great odds a few years ago. In stall 13. I have no idea what the horse was called. Lucky for some :p
