The totally off-topic thread

I sometimes wish there was better communication. Just a call would have sufficed to ask. "Gotta order a part- do you authorise expedited post?".

Essentially they dont care or don't realise that they don't care. The latter is worse because it implies they have no insight.. The disconnect is massive.

I only use Harris Farm. Stopped using Wollies and Coles for fruit and veggies back in 2008. HF usually have 2 sizes and are very often nice and green
Harris Farm a little out of the way from where I live in Sydney.

Probably have to try the smaller grocers in smaller shopping centres. Maybe try the AMEX small app.
Fruity Capers had some packaged last week. 4/5 for $4. None today but when I asked he got 4 smaller ones and gave them to me for same price. I bought another 4 then got some Halloumi and lemons to get to $20 spend and $10 credit from Shop Small.

Obviously the smaller avocados not so popular.

For computer parts (Toshiba, in my case)? Are you serious?

Having worked for a business that coordinated the repair of goods (i.e. we take customers' faulty goods and coordinate with repairers), yes. Some suppliers just don't do any other delivery method except what they are used to, whether it be regular post or regular courier. (This was in the days when regular post meant 2 business days between state capitals rather than double now, but still). For those that offered a chance to expedite (we'd check their website or ask), we made the request (through the repairer) and so it did happen (we even intervened to coordinate, e.g. arrange for the express postage via a local branch, or organise an express courier), but otherwise we sometimes were left reporting back to the customer why it was taking so long to source a part.

When you add things like part backorders (especially motherboards), that doesn't help a single bit, particularly when the part supplier (supplying the repairer) is definitely not going to demand expedited delivery of the backordered part from the upchain supplier.

What was worse was when the supplier of the part didn't even expedite their own in-house processes to get the part to the repairer as fast as they could, e.g. you could place an order for a part today, wait until nearly COB tomorrow for the part to be confirmed and then it only leaves their warehouse on the third or fourth day.

Since the mobs that supplied these parts were often the only practical/reasonable, or even the only, choice in the country, there was little choice that could be made in choosing another supplier. These kinds of things had us hamstrung with not much we could do to speed things along.

When that idiot at Australia Post pretty much doubled the price and halved the service many businesses increased email of invoices and statements and then increased air bag delivery of items as it is overnight.

Well Auspost is probably about to be privatised. Thankyou IPA.

I should add that when I was told that the part was having a bit of an extended holiday in Melbourne, I insisted that the repair shop call the supplier and order another part, express post, so at least we'd know it would be here the next day.

Nope. Apparently its the only one in Australia. I suspect that I'm being lied to, but that stopped that plan.

Well, if a $4.8 million annual salary for the CEO, huge price rises and a slashing of services is a mark of public ownership, I reckon what do we have to lose by privatization?

$4.8 million public service salary!! Thank you, government.

You could well be lied to, though it might surprise you that such an "excuse" is actually quite plausible. At least it was a part in stock and not on backorder (i.e. had to be sourced from overseas). And if I know most parts suppliers, unless it's something which is from the latest and greatest model (and even then), if a part is demanded, they won't order a few from overseas in case they need to supply it again - they will often only order one.

But from that, it seems that you know that the supplier was capable of getting it expressed, so yes, someone wasn't doing their best for your interests.

Might not be as Toshiba have downsized their Australian presence-

They last a long time in fridge (last purchased August sometime) but once cut don't last too long. I only use small quantity of avocado on small dinner roll in the mornings.

John, if you spray the cut avo with an oil spray ( I use coconut oil spray - you can get it at Woolies - or you can use olive oil spray ) the avo doesn't go brown. I put the avo in a Tupperware type container / spray the cut side with oil lightly/ seal it/ it will last for days in the fridge  and it doesn't go brown.

Or you could try the squeezey avo in a tube - you get that at Woolies too.

Arrrgh ! You've just set me off again. Rant #2

I'm in the market for a new laptop, as current one clearly showing its age ( and it has a hard travelling life with me). So I say to the Toshiba dealer, I'd like a replacement much like current high end one I have. I've got a bunch of peripherals, such as port replicator in the office and I don't want to buy all that stuff again. Also, it would mean my new current laptop and my spare one would be essentially the same, and so much easier to switch back and forth.

So I get the spiel about how Toshiba is leaving some of the retail market, and wouldn't I like to buy this nice Levono, and a new port replicator etc etc. Hmmmm

i go away and find that the exact one I want is still available, and, so, wanting to support local businesses, I ask the dealer to price it. 5 days later they hadn't done anything about it. Well if they don't want the business, I'll have to buy off the net, I suppose.

Which is pretty much the plan as delivery of those pesky letters is still a loss maker.

For every such email sent instead of being posted, APost saves ~¾¢ ...

Cup day Holiday?

It was only some years ago it bacame what it is now.

Until then, there were two Melbourne metropolitan gazetted holidays, each of half a day. It was not Victoria wide.

They were for the Melbourne Cup in November and the Royal Melbourne show in September: "Cup Day" and "Show Day".

Many shops would be open in the morning but close at midday.

In recent decades, many business would work on one of the days and have the other day off.

I did notice about ¾ the normal car park usiage to my local rail station on Friday - I presume a few were having a 5 day break.

17 degrees C and sunny here in Wales today, warmer than Canberra... :)

Mind you it has been a bit damp over the previous 4 days.

Did I miss something Cossie? Are you driving in the rally or a spectator?

Unfortunately only as a spectator. I tried rallying in the seventies, but the only person that was happy with my performance was my panel beater.

Honestly, the top drivers in this sport are good, equal to any F1 driver.

We survived Halloween. Started off slow but then the hoards came about 6.30 to 8.30... just about the same time that the baby/teenage magpies in our tree decided to learn to hunt and was eating a dead bird on our lawn... nice.

Someone at the hospital I work it seems to have forgotten that many of us are working today; roller doors down over the carpark entry and exits. Once I finally got in though there was plenty of parking, compared with the normal trawl up 4 or 5 levels to find a spot.

I loved going to rallies as a kid; my dad used to drive and my mum used to navigate.
