Sensational day at the Melbourne Cup today. Really great day with family and friends. Came out ahead at the tote (just), but I'm certainly no expert on these things.

The yellow rose is the official flower of the Cup, so I wore a yellow tie and pocket square.

Adobe highly recommends that it searches for and installs updates. Just a couple of small issues

- I don't want Google Toolbar installed on my laptop
- When my laptop boots up there is no internet access and that is when Adobe seems to want to install updates

I'll just keep the setting of Notify me to install updates thanks.

Gave up on Adobe reader a long time ago. I use alternatives.

I'm not sure if it's substantially better, but at least it doesn't keep annoying me for updates (except when the application is open) and the size of the background process is substantially smaller than Adobe. I haven't missed the latter.

My horse came second in the sweep and my hat came first in the office vote :)

So I won $$ and a box of chocolates

Double for me!!

#13 won me $40.
#17 won me $60.

I paid a premium of $20 in silver coins for reason below and I got 5x$20 notes in return.

Whoever got Last place gets $10 in coins (as per office sweep rule)

MrsTheEmu messaged me to say she'd punted big on the Cup today: $10 across four office sweeps returned her a tidy $108.

Checking in for our flight yesterday at SYD QF F desk I heard a kid, who I guess was about 8, having good whinge to his mum about flying Y and not being able to lie down on their flight to the US - his grandmother stepped in and gave him a great serve - it was a beautiful thing :)

...and i boxed 5 horses in a flexi trifecta and got 45% of the dividend - good times.

Just found out via passport application that my husbands name isnt his actual name and his birth certificate name is different... the things you learn after almost 20yrs of marriage.

Me to him: Your new passport BETTER have the same name that I booked all your flights with, the same name as your current passport!

Now that would be an interesting conversation to overhear! :)

I think the phone call with the passport office would have been fun to listen to.

Apparently it went like this;

Office: Whats your birth name?
DH: Bob Smith
Office: No
DH: Bobbiopolous Smith
Office: Nooooo, but close
DH: Bobby Smith?
Office: Close, whats a letter from the last name guess that needs to be added to this name guess
DH: Bobbys Smith?
Office: Bingo! Thats it.

My passport name is not the same as my name on the birth certificate. One is English, the other is Greek.

My DOB is also wrong. Hate using the incorrect DOB and was using my real one until most things became online and you needed to prove who you are so have to use passport/drivers licence with incorrect DOB. Don't know which account has which DOB and most times guess. Occassionally get it wrong and correct the mistake but consultant thinks j am a fraud and refuses to assist so have to call back.

School records, Medicare, taxation, most bank records including credit cards have my real DOB. Fun, fun, fun.

My mothers overseas birth certificate is off by two days but her old overseas passport is correct. All her Aussie documents are correct. Thought she might have problems voting in her country of birth for the first time this year but thankfully the bureaucrats didn't noticed/ignored it.

My birth certificate has my middle name in it, however I have never used it in any official capacity. For example, my passport doesn't have it, I don't have a tax file with my middle name, and other ID documents don't have it nor have I applied with it.

When I applied for my first adult passport, I needed to sign a document basically saying that the name I wanted on the passport is me even though my birth certificate shows a slightly different name. Renewals have been no problem.

Unlike many here, middle names are predictably "boring" at least in my cultural circles - it's simply your mother's maiden name (and unlike in cultures like Russian, it is not "declined").

I find it curious when I look at my birth certificate that my father's occupation forms part of the information on the certificate, however my mother's occupation does not.

So does the cheapskate buy an expensive car seat or a cheap one? $229 too cheap? :p

For what its worth grandparents are paying and they want to spend $500 or more but that's not in the cheapskates nature. ;)

Think there are some old threads on AFF. Need to work out if I need a second car seat suitable for air travel as she'll be going back to Thailand a fair bit.

Now here is something for the sweet tooth AFFers - a 12 kg giant gummy python -

"It's nearly 2.4 metres long, weighs a whopping 12.2 kilograms, is more than 36,000 calories and the recommending serving size – all 306 of them – is 40 grams at 120 calories each. Handmade in the US (where else), the pythons come in two classic flavours: blue raspberry and green apple or red cherry and blue raspberry."

And get reviews of them on Safety Websites as well. One mistake you would never want to own up to is saying "if only I bought the safest rated seat". Being a passenger is one of the most dangerous things in life we can do.
