The totally off-topic thread

The mother had some drug-affected member of the community in the adjacent room last week after getting her knee replaced. He made quite the fuss and eventually they placed a security guard at his door. Apparently he gave the staff an awful time of things. Not to mention his effect on the mental well-being of other patients.

Such a shame you can't just slip something into the IVs of these types, to help them sleep. Permanently.

The problems often arise after they have slipped something into their IV.

I got turfed out of a single room for a prisoner.

The alternative is they are put in the common ward but then there'd have to be one or two guards around them at all times. That sight, compounded with the mere fact that there is a prisoner in the same room as them, might frighten the other patients in the vicinity. I guess it depends on the individual as to "which is worse": being in the same room as a prisoner, or a prisoner supposedly getting better treatment.

At least with a separate room, if the worst happens, the trouble is easier to be localised in a set of walls with no other patients.

As someone who used to be in law enforcement, I thought that logic kind of made sense, unless you had a better proposal, or prison infirmaries were improved to accommodate these kinds of cases (assuming that they aren't good enough, thus necessitating the ride to the hospital). Maybe they should just have one ward dedicated only for prisoners or questionable types; I don't know how viable that would be (if you were in an emergency and the only beds remaining were in that ward, would you still consent to be treated there?) and one would hope it isn't necessarily filled to capacity at all times!

I'm not a hospital worker (nurse, doctor, etc.), but from what I can gather, it's not just patients who are drug-addled, have criminal tendencies or are generally disposed of ill repute who can make life "tough" on the staff, but even others who might seem quite fine if they weren't in a hospital. Males more than females, apparently. Probably not enough to demand a security guard, but anyway.

Maybe a separate ward for prisoners if hospital treatment necessary. Certainly not turfing people out of rooms once they have been settled in. Then sticking them in a mixed ward of 6 just to rub salt esp when there were empty wards right next door in same speciality. Given there are guards in casualty and people handcuffed to beds in open sight then hospital patients are pretty much used to seeing it.
IF the new RAH ever opens it won't be an issue as all rooms are single.

Buried my father in law yesterday. I felt like an absolute giant next to about 100 teeny tiny older people that didnt even reach my shoulder.

Was great to see at the wake a tray of scotch and wine glasses and seeing some of the aunties putting it away - why the heck not, go for it ladies.

Oh and my dad in law has moved into a very expensive neighbourhood - Im afraid to guess how much the price of the marble stonework is going to cost (bought the plot decades ago)

I'm glad my family has moved to cremation and the scattering of ashes.

Yep, thats whats going to happen to hubby and myself. In fact hes got it in writing private cremation for me, spend the money on taking me to Nth Sulawesi to scatter me and he goes diving.

He knows I will haunt him if he spends $$$$ on a stupid box.

Sounds like he had a good send off then. Hopefully he would have approved.

Copied over from the Ask the Pilot thread...

Actually you can, Hainan Airlines flies from TPE directly to PRC destinations such as PEK and CAN.

Actually a whole bunch of airlines fly various routes now between TPE and the mainland - including EVA, Air China, China Airlines, Spring, juneyao. Fares are usually pretty high, but there can be some bargains like Air China which seems to be the designated 'cheap' airline on the PVG route.

Interestingly the Air China fleet dedicated to TPE and TSA flights don't have the Chinese flag on the plane (specially modified livery).

At least one hospital in Melbourne has a secure ("prison") ward and is only used for prisoners. It's almost always completely full.

Australia has a substantial problem with the ageing prison population and their ongoing health care and acute care requirements.
