Edinburgh?

How crazy am I to visit Edinburgh in April? I understand it will be cold but is it crazy to consider?

That's the one! Eh, it'll be fine in April. It's not that bad right now (was -3 in the morning for example) and will be much warmer come April time. It's a wonderful place, very pretty and definitely not one to miss :)

We went to Edinburgh at the end of March a couple of years ago and it was reasonably pleasant with not every day needing a jumper.

Yes, we were there a few years ago in April and it was quite warm with one day reaching 18C. It is usually around 12 or so which is not really freezing. Even this year although there were some cold days there was a 17 in there.

Our plan is to spend 2 weeks travelling counter clockwise, from Edinburgh to the north (hubby already found the Glenfiddich tour) then over to the Isle of Skye and then down to Glasglow and back to Edinburgh.

I dubbed it the Not Another Bloody Castle Tour, going to get tshirts saying this :)

The days will be getting longer which is a plus. We were in the UK in January one year and with the short days I found getting up in the morning a real problem. The early sunset was fine, it felt like late night shopping here, but the dark mornings really got to me and it was hard to get going.

And our Tivo died on the weekend.... very sad.

Farewell Tivo. Only my husband used you but he loved you very much.

Ah! How sad. I love mine and dreading having to buy something different when it dies.

You can get them fixed (in Oz) you know.

I am filthy. And knackered.

Just spent two hours ripping up 2 rooms of carpet ready for the original floors to be sanded and polished tomorrow. But it is nice to be able to do such things now - a few months ago just the thought of it would send me to bed.

I did find a white ant poison notice dated 1994 so that's when the carpets were laid.

Day 1: carpets ripped up.

This all started a few weeks ago when the ceiling leaked. Insurance fixed up the ceiling and gave cash settlement for the carpet but sanding was significantly cheaper and much better. We already have sanded hallways so we knew they would come up brilliantly.

Thankfully no surprises underneath.

I reckon. Before we moved in around 14 years ago we ripped up the hallway carpet but should have done the lounge and dining rooms at the same time. But I didn't realise how wonderful they would come up. Oh well, better late than never.

Here are some I prepared earlier :p

This shows the 'old' polished floorboards next to the lounge to be 'new' polished floorboards.

Cant wait to see this area all done up.

I really must clean those windows!!!

Judging by the windows, the house is of Victorian / Federation era? In which case the flooring is probably baltic pine and yes looks absolutely awesome when sanded and polished. We renovated a Victorian terrace in East Melbourne years ago - it had the black painted floor all around the edge of the room (with lino (!) in the middle). We sanded it back and then spent ages fossicking through wreckers' yards looking for exact matching boards as some of the flooring had been ripped up / cut up for a dental equipment. The finished product looked amazing so it was worth it.

We were very lucky. All floorboards perfectly in tact. No holes anywhere except maybe gaps between the doorways where the carpet was. No more than 1 cm so should be fine. No nails or nail holes. Doesn't even creak!

Its an old Tudor built in 1928. The builder also built the house next door and one around the back. The latter was knocked down around 2 years ago to build a monstrosity of ugly dark grey concrete and that timber trim.

We also have a cupola in the entry and chandeliers in the front rooms and entry. About 20 years ago the old owners converted the roof space into three more huge bedrooms, full bathroom and separate toilet plus another large family room. All cute English style attics and dormer windows. Original leadlight in front windows and built in display cabinets. So we have three large family areas, separate dining room, formal front room plus study, walk in room for clothes, four bedrooms and three toilets and 2 bathrooms. Its just too large and we need to do more renovations (damn Adelaide soil) and then sell in about 18 months time.

It was a dump when we bought it - ceilings falling down, mission brown everything and mouldery carpets.

Did a similar trip around NYE time back in 2010; which was a cold year given London started snowing late November / early December. However, even still it wasn't really that cold and that was for an Aussie (me) who had only months earlier moved to the UK. You'll be fine

It's going to be max of 10 this week up in EDI, so slightly warmer already ;)

Reminds me, though in the wrong thread., how is your ankle Flashback? And the gastro episode - hopefully long gone and not a lingering parasite or similar.

Gorgeous boards Pushka. I remember years ago we ripped up the carpet from the family room of the house we were living in, thinking we would have polished boards. Unfortunately the dog made so much noise on them that it wasn't worth it in the end so we had tacky (well expensive) pretend slate vinyl laid instead

Still niggles a bit, but has been ok at hockey when I have been able to play thankfully. Its only when I shoot up and down the stairs at home that I get a reminder it's still there which is good i.e. largely forgotten about :) All good on the other bit too, was sorted within a week of return so happy vibes all round.

Our cat plays games on our current floorboards so I can just imagine what is going to happen. He runs flat out then puts on the skids as he goes around corners. He has always been fascinated by those cedar balls you put in to stop moths. He plays soccer with them, padding them around. They roll, he chases after them, crashes into walls and doors. Will post pictures when he's allowed on them.

It is *really* nice to log in to online banking and see $0.00 on a mortgage and $0.00 on a business loan. :)

We settled on our former investment property/first home today. Now to juggle some money around, and pay down the mortgage and maybe pay off my new car. Or should I head online and book the next family holiday instead??? :p
