Ergh, dont remind me. I'm horrified enough that the REA has keys. I've insisted that someone let me know before people are shown through. My home is my sanctuary and Im really uncomfortable with strangers poking around. Tempted to send all my jewellery back to mums to keep it safe, I'd hate for someone to help themselves.

Do it now.

Also take photos before and after every inspection just to have confirmation of what is moved/damaged/missing etc.

Remember you're still living there and you do have rights as to reasonable numbers of and times of inspections.

As for fur, well if they're that fussed the REA can pay for day boarding for your animals.

If there is anything you can't bear to lose then put it somewhere very safe. My experience. :o

Some accounts may be set up as either to operate and some as both to operate.

That may be (one of the) issues.

Agreed as mentioned earlier it all depends on how the account is set up.
My wife recently had to apply to (and visit) the Supreme Court of Victoria to get a grant of probate as executor for her late mother. All for one credit union and two bank accounts. The only assets which were not in joint names.
Her father (95, not very mobile but internet savvy) was annoyed that the ANZ would not let him operate an account he had been using for years.
But the bank was right it was in the deceased’s name and he merely had signing rights. The account was not his property to deal with but part of the estate.
However a proper joint account or other asset owned by both parties (i.e. in joint names) with either to sign simply continues as the property of the survivor and is not part of the estate.

Real Estate Agents. Grrrr. Sent off signed lease documents and copy of transaction showing bank deposit as first month rent. Their initial letter said that on receipt of said documents the ad would be pulled 'immediately'. Well, it hasn't been pulled and I note an additional inspection time added.
A follow up email has been delivered and read by one of the Agents but nothing back. God they are a necessary evil.

My mum in laws joint bank account with her deceased husband has been frozen, cant do anything without a certificate.

That simply shouldn't happen. Mum and dad had a joint account as well (ANZ) but there were no issues when dad died. We did end up closing it as it was easier to do so.

I presume most people here have closed plenty of credit cards over the years. How long do you keep the closure letters once you have them? Is there some prescribed length of time we're supposed to keep them?

I ask because our mortgage lender wants the closure letters from a cc I cancelled late last year, and I of course threw out the letter as soon as I received it.

Didn't foresee it becoming a problem I have to say.

Ah. I never expect anyone to ask for them either. If there was an issue prior then I might keep them but finding them again is a different issue. Actually I do have a 'go to' drawer.

Fortunately we dont have much worth stealing (most of the wine has been put in storage), though may be worth moving the wine fridge sooner rather than later. Yes all my good jewellery will go down to mums safe. Theyre welcome to my ipad, I could do with a new one
Unfortunately as unofficial tenants I dont think we have any rights in regards to inspections etc. Just like we were only told a key had been handed over after the fact. Much temptation to bolt the door from the inside.... ;)

Don't have direct knowledge of his specific account or bank but from other experiences, as noted above, it probably simply depends on whether the account was set up requiring just one or both signatures. By default these are often set up requiring both. If you have joint accounts or joint directors for a company etc, it's a lesson to ensure that either party can authorize access and sign documents otherwise an interim estate executor or interim company directory needs to be appointed.

I keep them so I can know when enough time's lapsed to be able to reapply for sign up bonuses.

Eddie has locked it in. Officially part time Richmond residents now.

Richmond is a great suburb. Close to the city and plenty of amenities. I used to live right near the MCG and whilst I don't miss the traffic, I miss the walking to work through the parks.

Eddie McGuire? Steady Eddie? Which one :)

Definitely Eddie McGuire

So, just had a frenzy of sorting out power and gas connections and then internet - which will be NBN so very easy. Previous tenants had it so I know it is a quick fix. Hopefully the power connection is better in Melbourne than I had last week for No2 son

Then Number 2 son requires internet at our other place that he is now renting out but there is no phone line. For once ISelect came through and they did all the testing etc and we have joined up a no contract with Belong, which is apparently owned by Telstra. NBN is being switched on there in April and then it will roll over to NBN.
Next week No1 son is coming back from Sydney while his partner in GP training comes over to Port Pirie for 6 months country training. In March he will follow suit.

So many house moves after so many years of 'stability'.

Popping over next Monday to make sure everything is on power wise for MrP for next Wednesday. Will take over a suitcase Monday full of sheets, towels, basic clothing and range of shirts for MrP. There is a new Coles apparently just 8 minutes walk up Swan Street or 3 tram stops. We wont have a car (maybe future) so loading up the myki and planning to walk.

It is indeed. Bridge Road walk is 15 minutes away although it is rather demolition street at the moment but my fav Rivette and Blair is still there. Swan street looks great and we are opposite the parklands. Punt road is busy but we are at the back.

You won't really need a car much or at all there. Unless you want to head out to the Yarra Valley ;)

Thanks.

One of the sons and mum in law went down there with the doctors death certificate and they were told they needed the official BDM certificate and she cant access her pension. Shes OK cash wise but thats not the point.

Frustrating as hell as even my own husband is piss weak on tackling this BS. Im ready to go down there and rage.

Joint bank accounts where both signatures are required are frozen upon death of one. Joint bank accounts where only either signature is required should not be frozen.

Also joint bank account holders separately and together own 100% of the funds. They each do not own 50% unless specified. So upon the death of one account holder the funds pass to the surviving account holder if only either signature is required. The deceased share of the funds do not pass to his/her estate.

Edit: Lawyers tend to explain it better:
