The totally off-topic thread

Melbourne lately had dry spell with it pelting down in Sydney and Brisvegas/GC in the same period. I actually cancelled a trip to NTL because the weather is horrible up north.
Yes quite unseasonal weather in Sydney the past 3 weeks. But Melbourne is quite famous for all 4 seasons in a day quite regularly. Not a pleasant sight when you are out and about.

Yarras (or Mt Seaview) which is upstream of us on the Hastings River has received 805mm of rain so far this month-no wonder the river has been stirred up

So what season is it that we currently have mid-season sales? Which reminds me, first day of Autumn today. :p
I've been in autumn for three weeks. For me it starts on March 1 not the equinox for some others :)

Yes, the sales are a bit bizarre. DJs used to promote itself as having only 2 sales per year; now they have stuff on special all the time.

Same for me. I'm adamant in a spring baby not a winter one.

On my cruise Critic roll call someone has just posted 'welcome to Spring'. I guess it's too much for them to even consider that the whole world does not reside in the good ole USA or even the NH.

I was wondering the same thing...

Some countries go on the equinox (ie today) and some go based on the 1st of the month.

Every three months on the 1st I post on facebook "yay it's summer/spring/autumn/winter" and every time my dad comments "you know it's not until the 20th"

21st is Solstice/Equinox in each quarter. Strictly speaking the 21st marks the true seasons. That's what we learnt at school.

Wasn't prevalent to me till I arrived here, so as part of conforming I've just given in and now aligned to the Solstice for my seasons...

Condolences Bindibuys and penegal!

We are all getting to the stage where the people around us are old. Life is short.

Reminds me of a very haunting (to me) song from the late 1980s by Mike & the Mechanics - "The living Years"

The lyrics really hit a chord.

Well worth listening too if you don't know it.

"I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years"

So I always encourage my friends (& family) to make sure there's no regrets - nothing left unsaid.

You never know what tomorrow may hold.

Thanks Ram, funeral is tomorrow. To be honest, we never bonded, if she wanted anything I would get it for her, but would not go out of my way without a request. I would hear the stories of what it was like with her as a mother, and I was so glad my up-bringing was SO different. My mother would attend the opening of an envelope if I asked her, she was at every event a parent would want to attend. MIL never went to anything that involved her children.
Anyway, best not to speak of the dead, but I am glad to have given my husband the worldly experiences he would not have dreamt of - if he stayed close to his home.

Not good at all D2? Work related, or?

Life of a teacher, D1.

It's end of term, so assessment abounds. Writing tests, writing revision sheets, writing the answers for the revision sheets, following all the senior school assessment protocols and state syllabus criteria....

....then, I still have to mark it all.

Oh yeah, and interim reports to be done.

Couldn't help but laugh at Mike Rowe handling this pre-flight safety demonstration:

They must be learning from Virgin and Qantas. Every day is on sale but at slightly different cost than the day before....

I hear your pain. After 30+ years in education, some things don't get any easier, though you get quicker at marking. Just when you seem to be getting good at it, the department will change the curriculum guidelines and you have to start again with new criteria and teaching outcomes.
By the way, sleepless nights are par for the course - if not late to bed, then not able to sleep thinking of stuff :)
