Ive flown Syd>Hervey Bay with VA a few times. No J by memory.

Looks like there is no direct from Melbourne, all via Sydney or Brisbane.
Yep don't need J for <2hr flts - VA ~$600 and QF ~$770
And just a mention, if you are going to HB a road trip to the Bundy Rum factory store if you have spare time and turtle nesting and hatching at Mon Repos (booking a must)
All work and no play for this little black duck but thanks for the thoughts.

But I will have to o/n so how is the night life in HB does anybody know?

Trying to work out what to do about laptop; issue appears to be the connection to the screen. If you give the hinge a gentle tap the screen comes back on.
DJs arent interested as its over 12 month old, and more so because they no longer have Dick Smith selling computers in store. I guess Toshiba is my next port of call. Pretty unimpressed that a not quite 2 year old laptop has failed and no one is obligated to repair it.

Hmm they would be in breach of consumer law. Apple computers have 2 year warranty.
They have to provide a repair option

When Masters was going out of business their were plenty of signs mentioning the manufacturer guarantee and Australian Consumer Law.

Does the receipt use a DJ's ABN?
Yes it was bought from DJs technically. But they dont sell electronics so they couldnt replace it even if they actually wanted to.

Should have gone straight to Toshiba.

The MS Surface 4s are on sale ATM since the 5 (4.5) will be out soon so 4s are available at fair prices.

I'll call Toshiba tomorrow. To me its a "new" laptop and I wouldnt even be thinking of replacing it till it was a few more years older.

Did you buy it on a credit card for a possible free extended warranty?

Maybe it's time for a call to Consumer Affairs.

Like MEL in the 70's?

The RSL is quite ok from memory if you're into that type of scene.

The full moon was a week ago.
The turtles are all back at sea-Mon repos hatchings are Nov-march.
Several pubs along the esplanade.
Eats-thai Diamond OK.Coast is probably the best restaurant left.

Planning to tomorrow.

You will probably have a hard time. I don't believe there is any statutory warranty period on computers as they are not on contract like phones. The warranty period is explicitly stated as 12 months. You bought it through a now bankrupt company. Finally, they will point to the hinge as physical damage.

We will only sell clients laptops with a 3 year base warranty because of the confusion around warranties and because they are built to last for longer. Computers with 1 year warranty really are built to last 1 year and people are always upset.

Centrelink, RSL and caravan park always seemed to be the most happening places. My Auntie and Uncle live there and they say they love it because NOTHING is every happening in HB :)

Last time I checked, David Jones hadn't gone bankrupt. DSE may have been selling it within DJs, but the receipt is from David Jones and therefore they are the supplier.
And there is no hinge damage....I would expect to be able to open and shut a laptop screen without the connection failing.

... and priced accordingly!

Sorry I thought the "bought from DJs technically" meant that it was a Dick Smith receipt. Even still, as a supplier, they have supplied goods which are warranted for 12 months and it did what it was sold to do. The fact that it is remedied with a physical interaction usually implies that it occurred with a physical interaction hence void warranty, if there was any to begin.

I am just speaking as a devils advocate here because we fight these fights so often, I regularly don't bother even trying to return then. We stopped selling them and refer clients to other places if they really really want it.

Nope, I did nothing to cause the problem, I can only assume there is some failure in the connection to the screen. Its never been dropped, bumped or otherwise mistreated. It has never even left the house. It was working fine when I closed the lid and placed it on the coffee table, and not working when I picked it up again. I'm guessing that when I gently tap the lid near the hinge its nudging something back into place; closing the lid then opening it causes the screen to fail again.

I really do hate that we live in such a disposable society that we think a laptop has done its job if it only lasts 2 years.

DJ's might not be able to replace it but hey are still on the hook for it. Australian Consumer Law.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying you did. I am just saying what we constantly had said to us. Have you had a look at all the youtube videos for Toshiba hinges and their issues? There are a lot and maybe one of them is like yours. If you had no luck with Toshiba, I would have a go at them. Sometimes it is the most simplest thing, ie. a loose connection internally.

Nope, I did nothing to cause the problem, ..

Without prejudice, reminds me of the user many years ago who rang up the company from which he bought his computer to complain that the cup holder on his computer had broken and he wanted a replacement under warranty.:)

The ACCC have made it very clear that the warranty provided is not the end of the story. Apple for example provide a one year warranty, however the ACCC have said that is not reasonable so Apple are responsible for repairs after that time (up to 2 years). The same would be the case with laptops - more so in fact.
