I just heard that paper £5 notes and round metal £1 coins will not be legal tender in the U.K. shortly.

You're correct. The UK turns their currency notes and coins around quite frequently.

Round pound coins will be phased out from March 28 2017, and will no longer be valid currency from October

Withdrawn Banknotes | Bank of England
Paper £5 notes will be withdrawn from circulation on 5 May 2017.

The only £5 note that will be legal tender after this date is the polymer £5 featuring Sir Winston Churchill, which was introduced in September 2016.

Oh the misery.According to the news Rockhampton is suffering an "Antarctic"blast this morning.the overnight temp plummeted to 11C.

If they are not legal tender from that date, will they have an exchange period (i.e. turn in old currency to replace with new currency

My cousin who is up that way posted a photo on FB of her dog all wrapped up in a blanket in his basket. She seemed a little shocked when I replied it was 6 degrees here after a low of minus 1.8.

Winter has come early this year.

Not in SA and Vic. We've had wonderful warm sunny days until just a couple of days ago. Everyone is ready for winter now - just as well as it's arrived.

They really need to 'man up!'

You might be ready but I'm not ready for winter. Looks like I have managed to pick up a cold the past few days. Could be a long winter if it goes all the way through to August.

I'm just hanging out to escape to the northern hemisphere in a few weeks; I'm not loving the cold this year.

I'm not sure I'm ready. I used to love the coolness of winter but things have changed. I used to feel the heat but damn auto immune stuff has turned this upside down.
I've had a cough and cold for 3 weeks. Never had one before that lasted so long. Plus raynauds kicking in big time as hands go bloodless white now (also happens when room thermostats set too cold in hot weather - don't they love_the_life ;) ) So this winter might be a challenge for me.

arrive in Milan on Sunday and it will be 8-18. Seems good temp for touring. Although down to 12 on Monday. And London's 15-16s.

Possum fur and merino gloves are very warm Pushka; they might help the fingers a bit.
Still got that cold? Time for doctor methinks.

I think it's on the mend. I didn't have that sudden moment when you know you are better - just that symptoms are less worse. The cough is different to what I was putting you through! :o. It's a much more socially acceptable one now.
