A stray dog killed our chickens this morning. Dog was caught a few doors up by Council. $220 fine to owner who allowed their entire male staffy to wonder the streets. Meanwhile, I have to tell the children that their pets are dead, clean 'the slaughterhouse', and buy more chickens.

Any ideas on how to value chickens and if its its worth chasing the dog owner for compensation?

Sorry for your loss, I know it doesn't help much in your present circumstances, but stuff like this deserves way more than a $220 fine. :(

I hope this owner isn't anything like the owner of the staffy dogs that killed our next door neighbours cat, she couldn't have cared less, my neighbour in the end gave up trying to get any compensation from her for the medical bills for him, he was bitten trying to save the cat, as was my wife who went to help and the vet bills for the poor old cat. The dogs were locked up by the rangers here for a couple of weeks then returned to the owner, as far as I know nothing else was done.

IMO, staffy and pit bull's should be banned.

I have had sheep and chooks killed by dogs, most stray dogs (guessing I don't see em all..) entering my place never leave.

I have to have insurance for my hobby farm livestock, just in case they get out and cause damage to others property - including damage to vehicles running into them etc.

Maybe it should be something owners of certain animal breeds must have to register, or it could be included in council licencing/registration fee as a user pays system, so people like Cossie's neighbour are not left to foot the bill for someone else's pet choices.

Replacement emotional support chicken could be worth chasing dog owner for replacement.

Sorry you have a sucky dog owning neighbour.

Our house backs onto a reserve, it's battle axe block. There is a bicycle/footpath then a treed area. By rights dog owners must have their dogs on a leash when walking in that area and using the path.

Probably 40% of them obey this rule, off lead I've seen them chase kangaroos, come into our yard and cough everywhere. Obviously not all dog owners are like this, but enough are for it to be a pain.

I'd actually like to see a kangaroo fight back, now that would be interesting!

Repair quote for the scratches on my side mirror, $125.00.

While its there, got a quote for them to replace the black dip/sticker stuff as its got a teeny, tiny scratch. Like 3mm. $275.00

Husband says, "Thats your birthday present, happy birthday!"

Ignore them. Would you not rather have a new pair of shoes?

When I use to walk to/from work, the number of dog owners that would yell, "Hes OK!", as the dog was running towards me, unleashed was amazing.

They would be yelling that because I was taking my backpack off to hit them with it.

Idiot dog owners.

I hate how the minority of dog owners ruin it for everyone else. Up until October last year we were living in a property that was gated off from the footpath. No issues with dogs. Moved into a bigger property that wasn't gated off, but the downside to this is the lazy dog owners (99.9% sure it's the Neighbour's) poop on our front lawn on a near weekly basis. They are nice people but really daft. I can't really accuse them until I have proof though which is the hard part.

Sorry about the ranting

A bigger problem is that I told the family the chook pen was secure after working on it over summer. I'm the one in the dog house for a while :(

Breaking news, Greens just lost another one

Larissa Waters resigns: Second Greens senator forced to quit over dual citizenship
The Greens have lost their second co-deputy leader after Larissa Waters has been caught in the same constitutional dual-citizenship muddle as Scott Ludlam, and has been forced to resign from the senate.
The Queensland senator, who was first elected in 2011, said she recently discovered she is a Canadian dual citizen, and, under section 44 of the constitution, is therefore ineligible to stand for the Australian parliament.
Senator Waters, who was born in Canada, said it was with "great shock and sadness" that she made the discovery she was still a citizen of the country she had not visited since she was 11 months old.

I was just about to post that. After the discussion the other night on this thread it seemed the suitable thing to mention.

I carry a hiking style stick when walking for exactly this reason. I smell of cat and dogs are attracted to me. I don't want to be near them!

Third anniversary of MH17 - always remembered.

Still nothing - sad and frightening.

well we know the plane was shot down, a bit more for wiki.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17/MAS17)[SUP][a][/SUP] was a scheduled passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board.[SUP][2][/SUP] Contact with the aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, was lost about 50 km (31 mi) from the Ukraine–Russia border and wreckage of the aircraft landed near Torez in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, 40 km (25 mi) from the border.[SUP][3][/SUP] The crash occurred in an area controlled by the Donbass People's Militia during the Battle in Shakhtarsk Raion, part of the ongoing war in Donbass.[SUP][4][/SUP] The crash is the deadliest airliner shootdown,

Will we ever find out the true answer, hard to say, it must be tough for the families.

Going through my flight history I took MH17 in 2006, so its a shock when a plane you flew in crashed or was shot down.

Sometimes I still think about some of the pax that I read about. That couple whose 3 children and one set of grandparents died, how horrible it would have been to start over. I think they have since had another child but still, horrible for them.

Im a bit disbelieving that these 2 Green senators did not know about their dual citizenship.
In Ludlum's case, he had various opportunities or at least triggers over the years to check his own circumstances.
In Waters' case, she knew she was born overseas.

At best a lack of attention to detail. At worst.....

Both did not bother to check earlier this year most recently when Labor tried to challenge the Kenyan born senator Lucy G***** citizenship quaifier(ill have to check speling of name)
