My friend in Florida says her power just went out and they are bunkered in their safe room.

I still think they should have evacuated. They live right on the water.

Dunno, It sounds like its not going to be as bad as originally thought. Cat 5 now Cat 4. Though Florida is mainly low lying and flooding/storm surges will be the main issue now rather than destructive winds.
Lots of alligators in that part of of the world and will they be wandering with the flood waters?? Scary thought

The news media are milking it for all it's worth. Multiple TV crews dotted all over the panhandle state while telling everyone to get out.

I'm sure it's still pretty scary but I totally agree about the media reporting. Everything has to be the biggest, the worst yada yada so we just can't make appropriate judgements. Even our weather bureau does it if there's been a recent bad storm etc.

I wonder if Trump's Mar Largo resort will be Ok?. If so maybe some Florida residents can get free Acom there!!:D

I waiting for a TV reporter to do a report while trying to stop themselves from being blown down the road. The only ones I've seen are still standing upright and only a bit wet.

"Oh look here is a bit of roof cladding that got blown away. Over there is a bit of water pooling from the rain. Oh we had problems buying gas for our equipment. Oh look over there is one car going down the road, why is that person not evacuating"

Lovely spring day here today so went for a stroll around the lake in aid of kidney health - the Big Red Kidney Walk. There was quite a low turn out and fundraising for the event for all of Australia was less than $200,000. Discussions over coffee with a friend's son who has a transplanted kidney highlighted just how far under the radar this area of health is. It needs to get a much higher media presence to ensure greater funding by the look of it. Nonetheless it was a lovely day for a walk.

Well we know he won't be offering relief to the Earthquake victims of Mexico.

I don't know whether he'd be a bit sad because it potentially means less Mexicans to build and pay for the wall, or happy because it means less Mexicans to bother his borders (plus to get back at the Mexican leader).

It's not sexy enough and It's not pink enough.
I keep telling people that more people die of prostrate cancer than breast cancer.

If we unilaterally recalibrated all events and their funding for the respective cancer research to reflect the relative death rates of the respective causes, I wonder what that would look like?

I saw that fact you keep telling people on an ad above a men's urinal in a public toilet. I don't know whether it means more people die from prostate cancer over breast cancer, or a greater percentage of men die from prostate cancer over those women who die from breast cancer.

If I recall correctly, Movember is a whole month dedicated to men's health, including prostate cancer awareness? I think October is breast cancer awareness month, but as far as I can tell the hype seems to be confined to a day or a week. Also, I've noticed more heart posts on Facebook recently.

Which cancer is easier for the person to take preventative steps? (Not implying anything - I am curious)

Skin Cancer is the easiest IMO
Interesting Question re prostate vs breast. Will check.
Here is another fact. Nearly half a million people die worldwide from malaria each year but I have not yet seen a celebrity/media sponsored spotlight on this scourge.
I suppose out of sight out of mind

Bill Gates is big on bringing attention of the malaria threat.

I side eye all the celebrity named charities. Seems they are securing ongoing salary for themselves by the being the figure head.

The other thing that friend's son said (and I have no proof either way) is that when people die as a result of complications from kidney disease in most cases it is another condition that is listed/coded as the actual cause of death, For example he said that those on dialysis often get fluid around the heart and the cause of death noted is usually cardiac arrest, not kidney disease, even though the heart problems have occurred because of the kidneys.
The other thing is that those 'famous' people who have had a transplant don't usually promote the disease, like for example any number of breast cancer survivors. I do get very annoyed reading about some actress/singer and her 'fight for life'!
