The totally off-topic thread

I can only wonder what it would look like if all cancer research was handled by 1 entity and all research money was directed to it. Bit like world peace. Or United Nations. Never going to happen.

Bill Gates is big on bringing attention of the malaria threat.

I side eye all the celebrity named charities. Seems they are securing ongoing salary for themselves by the being the figure head.

Yes that's right. And Bill is a non celebrity (unless you drool over Windows). Unfortunately these days superficiality rules. The other non celebrity - raising Aboriginal child sexual abuse (A Forrest) is fighting an uphill battle getting this into the mainstream media but 1 historical case of a aboriginal youth mistreatment in an jail causes a Royal Commission.
Similarly over at Taronga Zoo it's the cute and cuddly who get the sponsorship

Sorry I'm going really off the off topic

Who cares about world events, but I want to know the difference between like and agree,

Where is that rolleyes emotion when you need them.
Agreed. Who cares about world events.

And some people waste too much time sitting in front of TV.

The other thing that friend's son said (and I have no proof either way) is that when people die as a result of complications from kidney disease in most cases it is another condition that is listed/coded as the actual cause of death, For example he said that those on dialysis often get fluid around the heart and the cause of death noted is usually cardiac arrest, not kidney disease, even though the heart problems have occurred because of the kidneys.
The other thing is that those 'famous' people who have had a transplant don't usually promote the disease, like for example any number of breast cancer survivors. I do get very annoyed reading about some actress/singer and her 'fight for life'!

Kidney failure is easily treated. So the cause of death is usually something else as Line 1. Kidney failure does get recorded on the death certificate but not as Line 1

TV reporter in Miami:

"Wind is picking up"
"Oops it's getting very gusty"

But throughout this his hat remains firmly attached to his head. :D

Hmm have seen 8 TV reporters on TV. They are all saying the winds are picking up but they all have their hats on with no holding on the the hat look.

Maybe it's early days

Florida friend just posted that suddenly they hear high pitched sound... ended up being the smoke detector battery warning. As if they don't have enough to worry about.

She confirms it's not smoke.

I wonder if Trump's Mar Largo resort will be Ok?. If so maybe some Florida residents can get free Acom there!!:D

Well we know he won't be offering relief to the Earthquake victims of Mexico.

You may never know (watching the Aussie media). The substantial US Navy aid after the Indonesian tsunami of 2004 rated hardly a mention because it was headed by the evil George Bush. For all of Trump's (many) faults, can anyone imagine the mass media swallowing both their contempt and 'narrative' of evil Trump by actually reporting something positive?

Seems like they're just different kinds of ratings.

The Like rating is the only one where the total is seen by everyone in the forum (the number is seen on the full site next to the thumbs up icon under the avatar). Agree and Informative don't appear as statistics in the forum - you need to go to the member's profile page to see how many of each of the Agree and Informative ratings they have gained.

I guess Like, Agree and Informative could be different degrees of saying a post is good or useful, in descending order.

I suppose later, Agree and Informative could be used as a code for quick voting on a post, e.g. someone later might decide to go "This post is a voting post for me to gauge whether you agree with this airline's action: click on Agree to say yes, and Informative to say no."

Where is that rolleyes emotion when you need them.

It's still here:

Big Green has been combined into big smile (similar to Flyertalk's convention): :D

There's some new smilies in the ranks: o_O

Made you look! :p
But the idea is pretty cool, isn't it?
Now it's easier to put information in that you don't want to reveal straight away. Might satisfy some of the nervous on the result of a sports game, the plot of a book or ending of a movie or TV series.

I wonder if only members can see spoilers. On many forums that allow spoilers in posts, only members are allowed to expand spoilers and download files.

They did: they reported his flying to Houston to meet the victims there. Sure, they all said he was a bit late, but they could have said nothing.

In any case, Trump has his own news network, like any other classic dictator with its propaganda machine.

That won't happen. The recent ABC Q&A was again lacking in truth when comparing Trump with FDR. The Q&A narrative was that unlike Trump, FDR called out the naz_s. Except history tells us that FDR did not use the words naz_s when he reiterated his policy of isolationism and neutralism in 1940 preferring that US boys not be sent to war and defence is for defence

I think he may have been referring to some kind of coding used to report causes of death, where there is only one number/code. But, this is not my area at all so have no idea if that is correct or note. I know that chronic conditions are listed on death certificates as have seen them on family members' ones.

In the medical certificate as to cause of death there are 3 sections:
(a)Conditions Directly causing death
(b)Antecedent conditions leading to (a)
(c)Other significant conditions contributing to death but not causing it

For example and using kidney failure

(a) cardiac failure
(b1) myocardial infarction
(b2) diabetes
(c1) renal failure
(c2) hypertension

Yes. That's what MrP would say too. We are being manipulated by the media. Unfortunately Trump is also willing to provide the ammunition. So who knows where the truth lies.

I had a funny thought about this.

For many years of recent, we have "known" the media to be very selective with the truth, or even selective when to tell the truth. The USA media outlets were absolutely no exception to this, all the way through Clinton, Bush Jr and Obama.

Now that there's Trump and it would seem that the media seems finally ready to actually front up with some truths, their preceding reputation has compromised their ability to speak with some legitimacy... if only that the choice was between believing a Pinocchio-media or Trump.

Test post...

EDIT: If I read correctly, I think posts in TOTT (and by corollary, Playground) count towards post count in the new Xenforo system.

It was sorta hard for the press to avoid saying where Trump was, given that they flew with him.

And so Trump's a dictator now? Sounds like CNN  And I think that sort of comment devalues the terror and horror of the suffering under REAL dictators such as Stalin and Mao, doesn't it? Last time I looked, Trump was elected under the American constitution and is subject to the laws of that land. Dictator - forsooth!

Well, we didn't believe them much before, so we won't believe them now? What's the loss...

And I think that sort of comment devalues the terror and horror of the suffering under REAL dictators such as Stalin and Mao, doesn't it?

That was the most direct, fastest and contemptuous* term I could think of at the time.

In any case, I have no respect and full contempt for that "man" and care not a single bit about his existence.

* Anything particularly more contemptuous would likely violate AFF's ToS
