The totally off-topic thread

I thought everyone dreamt of their departed ones simply because they are dreams and the resultant interactions with them in dreams is simply our conscience just playing around with different scenarios. I didn’t really put any special meanings on them other than as memories.

I don’t recall dreaming about any loved ones I have lost - be it friends, family or even my dog. Not discounting they’ve occurred but I’ve never woken from a dream knowing I had and I remember a lot of my dreams.

Science does not occupy the high moral ground it once enjoyed.
Science is able to explain little, hypothesises a lot and increasingly indulges in belief(s)
This erosion of morality allows other realities to present as more ...er …real.
I can only feel for people who have and promote such views. Like the tourism boss from Qld who wrote to the federal governments in an attempt to stop funding of Australia’s premier coral scientist because reality of coral bleaching was, in his belief, costing him money in tourists not coming to see the reef.

There’s ‘belief’ then there’s published falsifiable scientific research. Morality and religion don’t come into it.

Although I would normally, as I have in the past, go strongly into bat for science and against mysticism and kookiness, as I have a finite number of minutes left on this earth (don't worry .. I'm not talking about some recent revision!!) I'm going to resist getting sucked into a pointless debate or discussion with those who:

* Do not bother to read or get some form of education when they don't understand something;
* Choose to ignore what little science they do have or are exposed to;
* Say what science can and can't do or 'knows' when demonstrably they know little about the topic;
* Just stay wilfully ignorant.

I watched Life of Brian last night and enjoyed again laughing at those 'following the shoe' or 'following the gourd'. I'll back the "Eppur si muove" mob every time..

Neither has superstitious or medieval belief. So stick with science and falsifiability and you are of much firmer ground.
I'll stick with what's relevant to me. And since science has no proof what so ever I'll stick with what makes sense to me.

P.S. Superstitions can be real.

A predictable response.. attack denigrate belittle.. boooorrrrinnnggggggg….tick tick tick …. :-)

Science has a credibility problem (ImnsHO)…. it has been sucked into belief at the expense of reason to support "positions"

I'm happy to support my realities with stuff I find.
Some, perhaps most, comes from science but sadly science knows so little…..

anyway.. pointless discussion .. back to normal programming…….

The only reply is “Eppur si muove”.

Really? I still dream about mum, dad, loved grandmother and also MIL. I remember lots of dreams - I’d say most nights that I dream. I’m very visual though.

I know! Sometimes I feel I am missing out on something but yes, despite being very visual in my dreams, I just don’t get dreams like that.

The most incredible dreams I ever had were the two I had when I was recovering in hospital ICU. I guess they were induced by the anesthetic. Full technicolor not sepia.

So yesterday flying from MCO to DFW I was sitting in 1A - so perfect for checking out all the hand carries - when a guy goes past carrying a folding sun lounge !!!!! How the hell was he going to get that in the overhead ?????

BYO seat is taking the low cost carrier thing a bit too far IMHO!

At Uni I was involved in a research project on dreams. There was some question that dreaming in colour is related to being left handed. I’m a right hand but brother and father are left handed. I dream in colour.

I didnt realise people didn't dream in colour. Mine are always coloured...I started out at a leftie but am now right handed.

If dreams are the boot or start up phase.. what does the brain get up to the rest of the time ?
Is it off chasing moonbeams or perhaps it moonlights in another dimension.

Watching British show, 24hrs in Custody, and police officer says, "He lost consciousness and when he woke up, he lost twenty pounds".

Me: How the hell does someone lose weight when knocked out for 10mins?
Husband: *looks at me like Im an idiot":
Me: What?
Husband: Twenty pounds money! He lost money not weight. Strewth.
Me: Oh. Was about to tell you to knock me out but thats not going to work.
