I think sauerkraut and some beans were the only canned food we had. Even beans were usually the ones you had to soak.

Sunday was usually roast veal and veg. I vaguely recall that was the start of my sisters husband estrangement 40yrs ago with my parents as he had negative things to say about the sunday roast veal and veg when drunk.
Mum didn’t do much cooking, as we had servants ( everyone did). I can remember this amazing thing called Samp, or stampmielies which was effectively a servant’s dish, but she always asked them to make extra for her. It was basically Mielies (corn), whic had been cooked until you got the mushy insides. Probably more to it than that, but I am a bit hazy.

When she did cook it was Lebanese dishes vine leaves, stuffed cabbage, courgettes, little meat pies and Kibbeh.

One other thing I remember was Babotie, a Cape Malay dish, I still make and it is very popular in my family.

Mmmmm. Mr ALH used the washing machine once (About 38 years ago). He ruined all of my clothes so has never been allowed near it again!
Which is a very clever tactic non?

I’m not sure if there are any MKR followers here but maybe some remember Valerie and her daughter Courtney who was gorgeous? I think they made it to the grand final. Well, many years ago Valerie was our EA and enjoyed her cooking back then. My family visited her place for dinner and I would occasionally cook Dhall. Which we love. She said that Dhall was only served to the lower class. So I found it quite hilarious when one of the meals she served on MKR was Dhall.

My son didn’t really notice Courtney as a 12 year old but that changed a little when she was on TV and all grown up.

I make up for it in the kitchen.
Yes. That’s true. I’ve noticed.

Tonight. MrP off to Melbourne. Tooth extracted yesterday. Pain killers. Sparkling wine. I’ve gone from news, to Married at first sight, to 60 minutes (crickey what has happened to Uni since I left, I know, consumption of alcohol) to Couples that murder. I need to sleep. Did I post this in the right thread?

We used to have another one which I remember being rather nice - no idea where the idea came from!

It was firm white fish fillets (in NZ we had tarakhi or blue cod) in a dish, finely sliced onion and generous squeeze of lemon then covered in mayonnaise. Topping was torn up grainy brown bread and grated cheese. Then baked.

Mum was an excellent baker. While we were at school she was a housewife/ stay at home Mum and there was usually things like peanut brownies or Afghan biscuits, banana cake or caramel slice and tan slice around.

In winter too there was always soup on the stove top (a coal range), a Sunday roast (which were good!) and a cupboard full of stewed fruit, tomato sauce, homemade ribena and jam.

Fried white bait but you had to clean them first then coat in flour and fry and could eat them like chips.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to clean tiny white bait

Mr Berg, who will visit Australia this month to hold seminars for US expats, said the situation was likely to lead to a wave of citizenship renouncement. The provision applies from November 22, 2017 and there was little avenue for mitigation, he said. ...
Ah, Trump. The F You that just keeps on coming.

In a similar vein, about thirty years ago I decided to help SWMBO by washing the Kitchen floor. She immediately washed it again.

I have not washed a kitchen floor since ...

I've been donating to Kiva for years and for more than $1000 I think there's less than $5 that hasn't been repaid

I’ve been lending to Kiva for years as well and all loans are being repaid. I’ll keep leaving the money there for new loans.

You do know that we know that you guys do that (poor performance) on purpose.

Him: How about I buy you what drop down press thingy to help you iron my shirts.

I should give credit where it’s due.

Mr ALH does quite a bit of Ironing and does his shirts, unless my mum visits and does them all for him. I don’t own anything that needs ironing, and only iron easy things like table linen and pillowcases when I can multitask (watch Netflix).

.....and I’ve been getting breakfast in bed most mornings for nearly 40 years! :p
