The totally off-topic thread

And you've said goodbye to karens. :(

With the way I nag I am sure Flashware will be delighted to have a break from me

I was allowed to drive twice on the holiday. From Ohope to Whakatane (ten minutes?) and at the hotel yesterday to move the car after checking in. My navigating rocked. We had moments when the talking man refused to talk and tell us where to go so I had to grab a map and guess.

PS How's your laptop Flashware??!! ;)

I don't know if I want to know what that is supposed to mean.

Just got a SMS from D1 that he was sitting in a Skybed; FlightStats shows that his flight appears to be on time (departing now) and indeed being serviced by a A330-200.

Hope you both had a good time in LOTLWC.

I probably should have asked WHERE re the laptop..... All good now.

I was texted too re the skybed.

We had a great time. I especially enjoyed White Island and the luge.

Not an area of my speciality...although I would think that it makes some sense, as the tail rotor spins quicker than the main rotor (doesn't it:confused:) and the tail rotor is still moving in the video.

Well, that's my best guess anyway...over to others to explain the physics side

This probably should go in the trip reports section but as its not my trip report I thought I would add a link in the off topic thread.

Trip report: Erupted, Disrupted, Interrupted

I guess a quick thinking traveler saved themselves a week of drama.

They are a regular traveler across the Atlantic and some of the comments are for the intended audience.

I didn’t think this deserved a new thread, but received a call from Tiger this evening regarding what was going to be my flight down to Melbourne late tonight. They called at 10:35 when the flight was scheduled for 11:05 departure to check if I was still intending to check-in.

Admittedly that’s 15 minutes after check-in would have closed, but they phoned to check on me, which I think is pretty decent of them. Especially when my fare was $47.

Probably to see if they could sell the seat to someone else....

Sure, we could take the cynical route here, but it was 30 minutes out from departure, so per their own check-in rules they wouldn’t be able to check the pax in, though they might be able to sell the ticket and then re-book them tomorrow :p

I take it that you didn't take the flight and gave up the $47 fare...how about the return flight?

No doubt they’ll phone again. I did log onto my reservation to cancel, but there’s no “cancel” button and I’ll be buggered if I’m going to phone them.

I am impressed they phoned though.

Completely agree, the idea of ANZAC day itself it to remember our fallen diggers who served our country in war. Why should everyone get the next day off
Umm why shouldn't we get a day off? You do realise that this situation only occurs when the 25th of April is a Sunday. i.e. not when it is a Saturday. (and perhaps when it is also on Easter Monday)

Personally, I remember the scarifices of past generations and the people i served with on 25th April. It makes no difference if the 25th or the 26th of April is a public holidya. The RSL has no place even bringing up the holiday situation, to me that cheapens everything the most. Why the hell is the RSL focusing on 26 April and not 25 April?

It’s a common occurrence, is it not, that when a public holiday scheduled for a specific day falls on a Sunday (or even a weekend?) the day is celebrated and then a public holiday is given the next weekday?

So what’s the big deal about ANZAC Day, why should it be any different?

So if Anzac day is not such a big deal why have a public holiday?

Exactly

So if Anzac day is not such a big deal why have a public holiday?
I do hope you forgot a smiley with that. There is no suggestion that ANZAC day is not a big deal. I'm extremely suprised by what it sounds like you're trying to do with your reply. I hope that it wasn't your intention.

The question asked is what is so special about ANZAC day that it shouldn't be treated exactly the same as any other similar day. Take Good Friday, a day that is vastly more important to the Christian faith than ANZAC day. You don't see the church whinging about there being a holiday, do you? No. Instead they get on and focus on the point of the day. The fact of a public holiday has no bearing on that at all.

In the same way why can't the RSL get on and focus on the meaning of ANZAC day. That is the greatest irony, that the RSL is banging on about the public holiday taking the focus of the meaning of ANZAC day, but then in raising the issue they have taken the focus off that very meaning.
