The totally off-topic thread

Way past my bedtime. Today I redid my will as it's 5 years old then gave blood. Plus this old lady in one of the local charity stores couldn't work out why I refused to pay $50 for a dress. From a charity store? It wasn't even a designer brand!!!!

Night night.

P.S I am terrified of posting on the Ozfest thread as we are not allowed to have an opinion and anyone that goes against wishes of the dictatorship is labelled a troublemaker....

I wonder if there is someone in particular you are thinking of... ;)

Possibly. ;)

I wonder if the AFF Gathering will be prepaid or pay as you go? :p
IMHO Pre-paid is fine; I certainly had this for the MEL OzFest.

The main issue I have is with the suggested management fee. If such a fee was charged at the mooted $10 (max) this would have made a $750 bucket available to cover "management" costs.

Am not going to be coming to AFF#4 now, also I'd like to let people know (I know most of my friends read this thread) that I will not be visiting AFF anymore.

Thanks.

Wasn't it for Tramcar restaurant only? It certainly wasn't for Sunday lunch or Saturday night dinner.

I know some things require prepayment (buses, cruises etc) but I object to being told what I have to eat and how much it will cost me for the privilege. If I feel like eating a salad then I will have salad only or if I do not want to eat then I don't eat and I can still be with the group. But asking someone to pay a fixed cost regardless of whether they will eat or not is totally unacceptable to me. I was sick most of Saturday (yes self inflicted and some sort of food poisoning) so if I had prepaid $80 for the meal it would have been lost.

I know the group is getting bigger but surely it cannot be that hard to find a decent restaurant that does not require set menus or prepayments and can handle group bookings and different meal requests. Perhaps I am wrong. But asking people to shut up and put up with it is also not quite right. You would be surprised at the number of attendees who were not happy with the setup on either Friday or Saturday night but do not speak up in public.

[/end rant (Hopefully)]

I totally agree with you on this matter.

I didn't go to ozfest, nor can I be bothered to go through the massive thread - but what's this management fee that you speak of? Surely FT DO organisers aren't charging DO attendees for organising?

Keith,

Don't worry about it as some people are carrying on  about something that is not going to happen.

It was part of the spiel given by thewinchester when arguing the case for Perth:

Organisation, registration and finances

I feel there's more we can do to make the organisation and management of this event more efficient and painless - particularly if we're looking at the same amount of attendees or above.

I would envision the use of formalised registration & management platform, which would in part be financed by a small registration fee (no more than AUD10). This would enable the organising committee members to better manage and distribute information, track attendees, dietary requirements, prepayments and hotel inventory, etc without having to reinvent the wheel.
...and...

I know that a fair few of the people involved in organisation dip into their own pockets to put together these do's and the relevant materials and articles needed to make them a success - and I feel strongly that this expectation/practice that they should be forced to do this from their own pockets is brought to an timely and necessary end.

A video for mainly geeks, but non-geeks may also enjoy watching what a geek can do with a bit of time on his hands:

YouTube - Lego Hello World

I actually used to have the original Lego Technic model where you could make a printer. That was pretty cool, but quite old and I don’t think you could connect it to a computer. And I also had a play with the original Mindstorms set back around the millennium.

A bit more high-tech than my double decker bus kit from my childhood.

Veering dangerously close to topic I know ... I'm currently at the MEL DJ lounge and it's really quite pleasant and peaceful. If only more airport lounges were like this!

Is that because of a lack of people or because the design of the lounge (e.g. high ceilings) give it a more pleasant atmosphere than the MEL T1 QP or JL?

FWIW the MEL T1 QP is not too bad for atmosphere whereas the JL can get rowdy near the "back" (i.e. where the TVs and office space is), but both will be undoubtedly crowded at rush hour.
