I was watching that live yesterday,I think both drivers were incredibly lucky that they were not killed,it was horrific to watch on telly and must have been even worse to actually be there,it's great that the medical staff were on scene so quickly,I hope Karl Reindler is ok.
Cheers

The heat from the fireball must have been incredible!

I just had a fright when there was a knock my balcony door/window. I ignored and there was another knock shortly after. Opened a curtain to see a semi-naked man standing on my balcony. On the 6th floor!

I let him in and he said he went out for a cigerette and locked himself out. He thanked me but also asked me for a shirt so he can go down to reception. I said no and just wanted him out of there.

He went downstairs and a few minutes later I could hear him going to his room with the hotel reception staff.

I am not very happy with this situation as I thought it was almost impossible to climb around the wall and on to the balcony on the 6th floor. An hour or so earlier when I got home the mattress that is between the door/window and bed had half fallen over. It looked a little suspicious as it is leaning upright and has been like that for a while.

Call me paranoid but I will be sending an email to the real estate agent tomorrow.

Yesterday, I worked at the V8s in Perth. Today I went back to my regular job. Is it wrong that I found work today rather boring because nothing exploded and none of my patients were on fire?!

For those who have no idea what that means, watch this:
YouTube - V8 Supercars Barbagallo Perth 01.05.2011 Karl Reindler Crash TV

For those who want to know what I look like - fat female in fluoro yellow. Thankfully the camera has cut away from the dreadful sight of me running

Oh I hope I don't get pinged for cross-posting.....

That's alright - if I had the runs I probably wouldn't be sociable either. :p

Sorry, couldn't help myself :)

In other news, I'm madly preparing for my own departure out of the country, requiring:
  • Purchase of a new camera
  • Preparation of my conference presentation
  • Packing (with ironing to be done)
It's going to be a mad day tomorrow, as if my calendar tomorrow hadn't been packed enough from weeks ago.

Know the feeling.. I've been here for almost 3 days now and have been non-stop the whole time. Have a few more meetings to fit in tomorrow morning, then back at the airport in the afternoon for the long flight home.... At least I've had a slow progression back to economy (First -> Business -> Economy on my last 3 longhauls)!

How bizarre! hope that's a one-off!

How bizarre! hope that's a one-off!

Not that bizarre to me. If I was locked out of a unit/hotel rooom with no mobile phone - I doubt I would have many other options than either trying to get attention from a neighbour or climb around onto a neighbour's balcony.

Years ago I used to live in a 3rd floor apartment, one day got a knock on the door from my neighbour (had never met her before that though!), she was locked out of her flat and wanted to use my balcony to climb around to her place. Not something I'd normally want to do, but for her the only other option was calling a locksmith out (and she didn't want to pay that).

Then there are the "spiderman" burglars who are happy to scale X floors of apartment complexes to enter through unlocked balcony doors.

Regardless of whether you are on the first floor or the 27th floor, it isn't impossible to get onto a balcony if you're determined enough.

You know my thoughts, and since this is the off topic thread, I have a question, if you suggest someone who should be in the GCC does that mean you think they are unfit.

Would they/you get offended if you said they should be in the GCC. :?:

I suggested jdevereux3 last year and certainly didn’t think he was unfit… though I can’t really recall what I was thinking :p

Any rugby fans out there?
Latest Qantas News Qantas Launches The Great Crusade 03 May 2011
Qantas today officially launched The Great Crusade, a campaign offering rugby fans the opportunity to be part of the ultimate supporter’s tour of New Zealand.

The Great Crusade is a convoy of 25 luxury campervans. Each camper van is decaled with Qantas Wallaby players on each side. The convoy will tour scenic New Zealand, following the Qantas
Wallabies as they take on the world in September and October this year.

The tour will take in the best the country has to offer, including vineyards, mountain ranges and beaches, bungee jumping, jet boating, thermal springs, plus, concerts and plenty of buzzing nightlife.

The Great Crusade is open to rugby supporters* and entry is via the official website www.thegreatcrusade.com.

Contestants can enter as an individual or as a team of two and will need to demonstrate why they should win a spot in one of the vans on The Great Crusade. This will include uploading a video
showing how far they would go to support their team – the more original and attention grabbing the better.

Winners will be decided by a panel of judges including Australian rugby legend Matthew Burke, Australian television and radio host Mike Goldman and Australian film director Gregor Jordan. Judges
will be impressed by creativity and passion and will be seeking out the characters among the contestants to take along on the convoy.

The winners will receive return Qantas flights to New Zealand and a luxury van for up to two weeks of The Great Crusade with all meals and activities included.

The Great Crusade departs from Australia 10 September and 23 lucky winners plus their friends will traverse New Zealand. The Great Crusade will visit Christchurch, Kaikoura, Auckland, Lake Taupo, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Hanmer Springs and Cloudy Bay with special activities planned along the way.

To celebrate the launch of the campaign, Qantas also painted one of its trans-Tasman B737-800 aircraft in a new rugby livery, which will commence services between Australia and New Zealand
from today.

The Great Crusade entries will close on 30 July 2011.

* Entrants must be a resident of Australia, UK, South Africa, New Zealand and USA or Canada (excluding Quebec) and over 18 years of age. At least one of the winner or their companion must be over the age of 21 years of age as of 10 September 2011. Have a full drivers license/ permit that allows them to legally drive in New Zealand. Full terms and conditions available at www.thegreatcrusade.com

Amex gave me a call (and left message) while I was in the U.S - apparently I had a suspicious transaction that needed authorisation. So I call them back, verify that the transaction was ok (It was a paypal UK transaction - nothing to do with my overseas travel!).

Checked my mail today, and I also had a letter from Amex asking me to call them urgently over the same matter... Seems strange they call and post.

Yes it is bizarre. I certainly hope it is one off as I did not like the look of the person as he looked around inside my unit and then asking for a shirt on top of it all.

That said, where you live is aimed at a certain type of traveller. So, the shifty shirtless bogan type traveller is part of the regular clientele.

Wouldn't mind betting that he might have a prior conviction for something. I can't help feeling a bit suss when you said he looked around the room. Surely if he was genuine he wouldn't be doing that.

If you knew his name you could Google him but don't know whether reception would give that out due to privacy laws etc.
