Lol. Nice excuse ;)

But it is true.

So I been to the 1st lounge a few times now, I recognize some of the staff but they don't recognize me, will have to go a few more times to get noticed.

Normally I catch the train into Hong Kong but stumbled across the hotel shuttles, price the same as the train just twice as long and I can charge it to the room. well it is something different to try, I could have stayed near the airport but I wanted the points.

Currently at the LHR T1 *A Business lounge. There is a choice of two, this one or the BMI one. This one has better food but BMI has a better view. Drinks are much the same. Hmmmm......!

How's the decor?

Most people say that the BD lounge is better for decor and view, as well as general mood (i.e. riff-raff and the like). Food - much of muchness, unless we are really talking good stuff (doubt it). Party pies are not a deal breaker!

Decor is not as nice, they actually have hot food where BMI does not and they do have showers....

Wow. There are some real maroons who are "Executive Directors" of various organisations. How do they get into that role?

Case in point ... Mr Gary Black (Executive Director, National Retail Association). He is discussing gift cards. According to him:

Gift card expiry dates could 'kill' service

"I think what you want to do as a retailer or as a business is you certainly want to encourage the redemption of these cards within a reasonable period of time otherwise you have this liability on your books," he said.

"In theory, if all these cards were redeemed unexpectedly within a particular point of time it might put some stress on the cashflow of the business.

Right, so where does the money from gift card purchases go? Why would it put pressure on the cashflow if redeemed at a certain point in time????

Unless you fly a lot the SYD lounge staff are just too bombarded to notice.

Although the turnover rate is moderately high, I still recognise some of the staff in the MEL T2 FL and they do recognise me too. The spa staff at MEL haven't changed and I still recognise them. No, I do not offer chocolates to them all the time (unlike one notable forum member). ;)

This is how I see it...

Like most products or services which are bought with the intention of use at a later point in time, the rationale probably is that the money you pay for a gift card doesn't remain idle until it is used. That is, when you buy a $100 gift card from the company, they don't stash $100 in a special "gift card fund" with the big label saying, "In Emergency Only: Break Glass". They use that money for whatever they do to run the business. The gift cards themselves are noted as a potential liability, but unlike the power bill which needs to be paid by hook or by crook next month, gift cards are perceived as longer term and "softer" targets.

In saying that, the argument still doesn't make much sense. Unlike purchases per se and what not, there is no "season" or "peak" when gift card redemptions are at their highest (well, at least I don't think so). People don't horde gift cards for times of GFC = dumb, so in reality the only reason there is an expiry date is to control the accumulation of potential liability borne by the company (in the same way that a FFP would encourage its users to burn through points, despite most FFPs not actually having to bear liability for the loss of points should it go bankrupt anyway - or at least such a liability probably has no legal standing and / or precedent (although those new divorce guidelines in the US are notable)).

The expired use of "Gift Card" value is termed "breakage" - just like reward program point/mile/credit non redemption.

If there was no breakage, the retailers would not bother.

It's about time QF changed their arrival spiel at CBR AP.

Jet* doesn't fly here so there is no need to tell us about collecting luggage before checking in.

As silly as it sounds - email Qantas... They will correct it in the manual (But it takes 2+ years to filter down to the "know it all CSMs" who have every city arrival speech downpat!)

I didn't think this deserved a thread of it's own but worth posting anyway.
