So it's not timed? What happens if he falls over, does the whole pack have to wait for him to get up and to the front again?

I read medhead's statement as meaning that the final stage is rarely a decider. If something awful does happen to Cadel (touch wood), that may just relegate him back to a lesser podium finish, but disregarding these kinds of events...

Of course I could be talking out of my **** here...

No, the last stage is for the riders to celebrate as they come into Paris, swigging on Champagne.

Congratulations to Cadel. Finally no longer the bridesmaid! Given his speciality is time trials, he knew that if he was close enough to the leaders at that point, he'd put it all into the time trial. It doesn't matter how much he's hurting today, the euphoria of winning makes it sweet

Even better than leading the TdF. Cadel has won it, as the last stage is not contested, except for the green jersey.

Thats not correct, its a gentleman's agreement that it ends with a bunch sprint, it would be unlikely for one of the leaders to get a good break and make up the time but not impossible! 79, 89 and 2005 all saw changes to the general classification as a result of the last day racing, so it does happen, especially as Evans and the Schleck brothers are hardly best of friends!

Re: AA CEO says QANTAS is not a Premium Airline

Regardless of what the AA CEO did or did not say, it is still the case that qantas is no longer a premium airline. I'll bang on about this until the cows come home but beetroot chips are not premium.
But I love beetroot-especially Bill's Beetroot Marmalade from Tassie.

Was the first course at the epiQure launch in Mel. Just a small Beetroot, greens for contrast and sauce. Delicious.

Then there is the great Aussie burger. It is nothing without a slice of Beetroot.

See something we do agree on. ;)

Totally off thread but I find that beetroot chips are an acquired taste depending on the level of hunger!!

I totally love beetroot as well except when it is salt dried and served as a chip.

And after having tried them I know that I'll never be that hungry even if I was with Beat Grylls in the middle of nowhere for a week and I had a choice of maggot infested camel liver or the chips.

Why is everyone double posting in here? Or am I a little blurry eyed after working an 80-hour billable week?

Thank goodness for holidays in 3 weeks...

It's timed just not really contested, despite limited examples. Cadel has over a minute lead, in 90 odd kms it is very hard to make that up especially as the sprinters want their day in the sun. Not to mention that BMC has been a very strong team on the flat.

As for the limited examples, the commentators have only mentioned 2 examples and one of those was the second guy playing with the first guy; he stopped the attack on the second lap. To mention the elephant in the room, Evans lost by 2 seconds in the last couple of attempts. Everyone was very quick to remind him that they don't attack on the last day on that occasion. Especially Contador. I also seem to remember them waiting for contador on one of his recent wins when he had a bike problem.

Finally, there is drugs. Evans is widely acknowledged as clean. Last year's winner still has drugs hanging over his head. I dare say they realise they need the positive image of Evans as winner on the drugs issue.

A heap of posts moved from another thread. Maybe 2 mods got to efficient and both moved them at the same time. :?:

So you billed 80 - that would mean working 30 wouldn't it? :D :D :D

Enjoy your holiday when it rolls around. Not too long away now.

Laurent Fignon (who passed away last year at age 50) lost the tour in 89 by 8 seconds on the final stage after coming into the day with a 50 second lead. Glad to see that the gentle mans agreement stuck overnight, well done to the NT born Cadel!

Good to see that Cadel Evans becomes the first Australian to win the Tour De France, nothing is a sure thing until the winner crosses the line.

In other Australian sporting news Mark Webber finished 3rd in the German Grand Prix. (no relation)

Heh, I wish. I've been running on auto-pilot since Thursday night. Just hopping into bed now, have another epic week ahead of me....

Though in 1989 it was a time trial on the Champs Elysee so a totally different situation to last night.
And once again-well done Cadel.Poignant moment as he crossed the line and the BMC team came together in a group hug.Despite his huge heart you really do need a very good team if you want to wear the yellow jersey.

PS-you can watch the 89 duel here-

Yes it was different, mind you places 5 and 6 came down to the last stage in 2005, and in 87 when Delgado put up a challenge to try and win, I am not sure how long the tradition not to challenge has been in place but you do get the odd attempt!

I said the words "Do you know who I am?" to someone today.

I do home this isn't the sign of things to come.... :S
