If its a Lenovo laptop, then you have a few options when it comes to a fresh install/rebuild.I have run Lenovo hardware tests, ...
The original Lenovo OS build from its pre-installed software will have the tools installed to build your own re-install set of CDs to take it back to a factory fresh OS load.
If the tools to built a fresh install-set are not there or cannot be run, you can call Lenovo Tech Support and have them post you an install-set. They will charge a nominal fee for postage and media. Last time I requested an install-set (T60 I think it was), it cost me about $60 and arrived in a few days as 7 x CDs. This allows you to install as if shipped direct from the factory. In fact, just last week I reinstalled my old T61 back to Windows XP as it shipped form the factory, then applied all the windows updates and reinstalled necessary apps and it was ready for the kids to use for homework etc.
