The totally off-topic thread

Not just the mining industry.

People in IT have been struggling to get jobs for years and we see fit to import low income labour from SE Asia as they keep telling us we are short of skilled labour. Rubbish....

Ok I have a question which is off topic to this thread, and hence on topic.

QF codeshare on BA LHR-GLA, connection from SYD-LHR, business printed on the BP but firmly in Y seating with "S" fare. Points awarded as "Economy" base of 345 and minimum points guarantee applied to earn 1000 points.

BA flight GLA-LHR, no connection to SYD as I had a stopover in LHR, Y seating with "S" fare. Points awarded as discount economy on a base of 87 and a total of 174.

As best I could make out I was expecting to earn the same (low) points on both flights. Why the difference in points and also in the fare type (economy/discount economy)? Just because of the codeshare difference? Does the qantas system somehow see the LHR-GLA as a domestic service and decide to award full Y points? Or does the JSA somehow come into play? My reading of the footnotes in the airline earning table can't really see how the different treatment occurs.

BTW I really don't want to start a new thread for this question because it feels trival. But if mods feel otherwise, please split it off.

Just ridiculous! People are losing jobs left, right and centre in Australia, yet the government is letting the mining industry to import more low skilled foreign workers on new bulls@#@ visas. What has happened to the Labour party in this country? Is Juliar or Gina Rinehart running this country?
Rinehart's new mine taps foreign workers

Absolves the need to blame "faceless men".....

Not just the mining industry.

Yep those damn 457 visas.

People aren't really losing jobs in the mining sector. It is high turnover though, but that's not a professional problem, that's a social-moral one (how long could you do FIFO)?

Skilled labour is hard to come by, e.g. engineering in mining. No joke. And not enough people to fill them.

As for low skilled work (e.g. driving trucks), I'm not sure the federal government could easily "block" or insist on large mining companies on taking on Australian labour rather than foreign labour without feeling some retaliation from the mining companies. Remember when the government tried to instigate the first RSPT?

Also, let's be perfectly frank here - how many unemployed Australians actually seem to have enough drive to get themselves into these voids created by the mining industry? Or, get themselves upskilled so they can take these jobs here? Not many? Why is that?

In short, your last question's answer: the mining companies run this country. A BHP Billiton (I believe) executive has said it himself before, without reservation. If the Liberals were in power, they'd all be kissing Clive Palmer's bottom (nice word) and then some.

The vicious cycle is that the mining companies do something drastic if they don't get their way, the people tend to suffer from their drastic actions and hence they don't like the government until they "set things right". What room does that legitimately leave the government to take a social or moral stand without dramatic consequences from large corporations who supposedly contribute significantly to the economy?

Tickets with a QF flight number has the minimum points guarantee applied to it, regardless of operating carrier (in the case of BA, anyway)

Not quite right.

To post in this thread you need to be off-topic to AFF in general and then you are on-topic for this thread. If you are off-topic to this thread then this is against the posting guidelines to this thread. ;)

A little too confusing for a Friday afternoon JohnK.... Especially after a glass of Giaconda Chardonnay or 3.

Little Miss is getting an MRI at the moment, and I can't be in there due to a body piercing I can't remove. Mr Katie is with her. So hard - just heard the technician ask her to be completely still to take another two minute picture. Her involuntary head nodding is why she's there ... being still is a BIG challenge!!

It makes much more sense after 7 or 8 drinks. ;)

And quoting 3 or more consecutive posts is also off-topic for this thread. ;)

By the way posts in thread are not supposed to make much sense anyway....

Lol Cove.

Please do NOT tell us about it Flashware.... It makes me just get a little bit of sick in my throat.

Don't worry, I've made my sacrifices to the gods and hopefully will get my J or whY+ upgrade for my PER-SIN-FRA legs :D

There in lies the beautiful irony of the thread. If you are off topic to AFF in general and hence on-topic to this thread, you are no longer off-topic and so should not be in the off-topic thread either.

I have a request for the time gods. Please give me more of your fruits (time). 3.5 day trip is nowhere near enough time to get everything done that I need to!

, I apologise in advance. I think I'm going to come up short this time unfortunately!
