I think I'll give the upgrade gambit a try at the Langham as well. You know:

"Yeah, it's our 40th anniversary, actually. Yep, the big ol' ruby. We've stayed here before and thought it was great, so we decided to come here again to celebrate." :p

It's our 40th wedding anniversary Saturday week (we were both 21, ridiculously young now, not so then) and I wasn't going to do anything special because we are having a big J class European adventure next March. However, I do tend to do make spur of the moment decisions.

So via Virgin Holidays I've booked flights to Sydney and a night at the Langham (formerly the Observatory), one of the better hotels we have ever stayed at. Total cost is $700. Pretty good value I reckon. I wonder whether if I casually mention that its our 40th when checking in at the Lounge, we will get an upgrade? Worth a punt I suppose. I know better than to actually ask for an upgrade.

Well done, congratulations & happy days!

After 18 years + another 8 as a couple before we made it official - we have a way to go:D

Thanks Rallo. Most people we know divorced well before a milestone like this. My wife is a wonderfully calm, understanding and caring person. Balancing my lack of these characteristics. ;)

Seriously, I'm a very lucky man.
Congratulations. You two sound just like us!We had our 41st a week ago.

We just celebrated our 16th last month so a way to go yet to hit 40 , have a great time in Sydney.

No.A child bride and cradle snatcher.:lol::p;)

Congratulations one and all, you are all doing far better than me :oops:

I went to another wedding on Sunday, but didn't bring anyone with me. The plus side is I got to try all the meals on the alternate drop menu*

* I had RSVPed as 1 (just me, no penegal +1), but the person sitting next to me was a no show.

All these happy couples! Well done you all. After 42 years of marriage it's taught me two conclusions - I am a patient, tolerant woman - and my husband chose very very well !! ;) We had a week in Paris for our 40th (Don't be envious - I went back to work 2 years ago to earn the $$) and the fabulous SQ crew as well as plying us with plentiful bubbles during the flight, also presented us with a bottle of champers to enjoy in Paris, and presented us with a chocolate torte and a handmade card which the captain plus entire crew on the upper deck had signed. Such a nice touch - but trying to enjoy a very rich chocolate cake at about 5am was difficult! Crew delighted we insisted they share it around! We'd hoped on the strength we may have snagged an upgrade to 1st but that's just being greedy in't it. Business SQ on the A380 was superb.

However we also mentioned at 2 of the hotels on our stay - one in France, the other in London - that it was our 40th and did crack upgrades. I think it's all in how you ask - and the low key Aussie way, being a bit cheeky, seems to work. The old adage - 'if you don't ask...." worked for us. Had a great time of course - and we decided we'd both be happy to saddle up for another 40 years.

I'm feeling positively a youngster in the marriage scene - 9 years + 1.3 prior knowledge of Mrs LW.

I started the second time around very late...had to ensure I had the right one, after an abject failure first time around at age 25.

Well that was fun. Just been made redundant after 15 years. Truth be told, it was probably the correct decision in the circumstances. I get a decent payout, and I'll get another job fairly easily I reckon, although I might have to drop pay.

Frequent flying will now be off the agenda, at least for a while. A blessing and a curse.

That reminds me of "Up In The Air". Best wishes for finding the next job and you'll look back on it as a stepping stone.

The no FF is a bit of a problem :o

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought of, and I've been on the other side of the desk often enough. The HR guy annoyed me no end with his "this is hard for us" cough. I said to him "yes, I used to say that too, but at least I didn't pretend to believe it".

And I am feeling left out....
There are plenty of prospective princesses in Thailand John.. just be absolute certain to choose the right one, as you well know.;)
Sure you would have a large contingent of AFF supporters for any relationship celebration, whenever & wherever it may be.
Cheers,

An all too common scenario for many, within the confines of our fabulous country nowadays.
Sadly, it appears to be 'profit over people" - a most common analogy adopted by the corporations & 'bean counters"
Wish you strength, luck, health & harmony with all your future endeavours.
Cheers,
jl

Good luck with your future endeavours,

I have had a few career unexpected bombs but I look back and now and it is all positive.

I am self employed and I like the fact that my destiny is what I make and a bean counter can not make me redundant all in the name of better profits.
