Sept 14 is the I love Tony or Julia day (or the "I am a donkey" day).

Not sure what's worse - having teeth pulled, or voting in Australia.

I think I'm leaning towards teeth pulling myself. :(

Vale the sensible democracy, thy name Australia.

and if you think you can't afford the insurance policy, then you can't afford not to be insured.

Indeed. I'm gutted for our tenants, and the lease has a statement about the property being a flood risk, but I just can't understand not having contents insurance. At least their car was insured.

So...how does one do a postal vote? The election is perfectly timed for when I'm out of the country.

Fairly easily. If I recall correctly there is some kind of form which you use to apply for a postal vote. I think you may need to do it closer to the date though.

I've had my details off the electoral roll for over a decade and I usually postal vote.

The AEC will send you a pack closer to the date.

Well the writs are issued after I leave the country so no pre polling and i am in the Canadian Rockies on Election day.So dont have to vote for anyone.

Best outcome. I'm looking to find a conference around mid September now.

So how exactly do you justify your inability to vote, thereby sidestepping the fine?

Not saying what you're doing is wrong, but want to know more detail (sorry for the naivety, just not sure what you mean by the writs).

Actually I don't know my home phone number. I never ring it and always provide the mobile number because it is with me.

I remember mine, but they are easy to remember.

My Canberra home line ends in 3222.
My Sydney home line ends in 1234.

Not that they're used very often :)

I do find it very easy to remember numbers though. "0118 999 881 999 119 725 3" anyone? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab8GtuPdrUQ)

Correct. Some years ago I was in NZ during an election - departed Aus three days before postal voting opened, unable to get from DUD-WEL on voting day (voting only at Embassy in WEL), therefore voting not compulsory for me for that election.

There's a form you fill in with details to be unable to vote (ie. to stop the system automatically sending you a fine!).
