I wonder how many of the folks who had "fun" driving through the foam on the coast will be having "fun" when their car literally falls apart in 6 months time from salt corrosion?

I thought the same thing Markis!

It just came to mind...

I remember in my childhood when we still had telephones and no mobiles (or really expensive ones). We collected our friends' numbers, but guess what? We seemed to be very good at memorising many of them! And this was even before you got phones with speed dial on them (and of course, programming the speed dial on your phone was like setting up a taping on your VCR!)

Now, I bet most of us can't remember many numbers to save our lives. We turn on the smart phone, go to Contacts, or type the first few letters, and voila....... sucks, of course, when your said device runs out of power...

I do like the iOS/OSX world of syncing contacts across multiple devices when they are online, so that they are variously accessible when they are offline. I am sure this is also possible in the MS/Android world.

Worst come to worst I can log into my account at an internet cafe to look up any contacts I may need.

I'm certain it's possible with Microsoft and Android, but I think you've also slightly missed the point ;)

We are all being programmed to be stupid... perhaps we should all don tin foil hats... jokes :p

But you raise a good point anat0l, it is amazing how little information some people retain in this age of constant connectedness.

Well, the numbers were shorter back then, and well, there were less of them. Most people you could get on their home number, now everyone in the family has their own number.

Having said that, I still had a notebook full of numbers....

I can still remember the phone number of a house I lived in before I was 10...but out of all the phone numbers in my mobile, I only know two "by heart"...so if there is ever an emergency and I cant use my mobile, its either my mum or my high school bestie (luckily we're still friends). :D

I can still remember the episode where Homer Simpson says..."quick, whats the number for 911"? :)

How many of us remember how bake bread, start a fire, knit, hunt a mammoth, track a deer through a forest? Why do I need to remember things that I don't need to remember? It is called evolution or advancement. People say the world is getting dumber (more dumb?) but more people than ever can read now (I won't say write given the poor quality of written English around). More people than ever can speak two or three languages. We took French lessons in school at high school because we had to - now kids are being taught Japanese in public schools (ages 5 to 12).

There are things I do not need to remember anymore - mind you I am learning to bake bread ;)

Actually I don't know my home phone number. I never ring it and always provide the mobile number because it is with me.

I guess I could look at my phone bill if I really wanted to know but I don't. Too much stuff to remember already.

You mean if you ran into one?

Unlikely you would trip over a mammoth, unless you were perhaps Paul Bunyan.

Well i have been to Bemidji.

I don't think I ever knew how to hunt a mammoth.

Baking bread is for machines :)

That is exactly my point people now are not learning to remember phone numbers not because society is getting dumber but because society doesn't need people to know and remember this stuff.

I wouldn't recognise a mammoth if I tripped over one!!!!

Lucky for you you don't have a four year old watching Ice Age on a loop - you would then be very familiar with mammoths...
