Not saying what you're doing is wrong, but want to know more detail (sorry for the naivety, just not sure what you mean by the writs).

"Noun1.writ of election - a writ ordering the holding of an election"

"The Prime Minister will advise the Governor-General to dissolve the House of Representatives and issue writs on Monday, August 12 for the September 14 election."

The Electoral Commision cant do anything about voting until this is done. The EC then set a date for opening pre -poll and post votes.
So if you are already overseas before this then you have no problems. It has happened several times to us and no fine.

Best outcome. I'm looking to find a conference around mid September now.

Gillard has stuffed up again with this date. There is a scientific forum with no topic details announced at about election time. But first week of October would be better with something pretty good in Vienna. Otherwise, a Fukushima tour and such like in June.

Googling "September 14 conference" brings a few interesting results:

European Society for Artificial Organs in Glasgow
International Conference on Information and Computer Technology in New Delhi
International Bar Association (the legal sort) in Florence

Something for everyone!

Possibly, but I'm wondering how to skip the election campaign. Voting is easy, sitting through the cough is the hard bit.
Do they have an election campaign before election?

I am going to vote and then watch the results on election night. I am not going to turn on the TV for anything other than the AFL Footy show....

Well the writs are issued after I leave the country so no pre polling and i am in the Canadian Rockies on Election day.So dont have to vote for anyone.

Not quite DrRon - there will probably be a polling station in Banff ;)

After all - it is the 8th Australian state (after British Columbia)

Congratulations Daniel Geale. A unanimous points victory to retain his title. Cue the conspiracy theories from Mundine as to why he lost.

Yep it made me very happy when I woke this morning to hear that news.

Every time I see a JQ 330 taxi past I can't help but feel there's at least 10 boozed up AFF'ers onboard.

Well, Mundine can't play the "race" card this time ...

He already has. When questioned about Geales aboriginality pre fight Mundine replied that all Tasmanian aboriginals had been killed.Certainly made the headlines in Tasmania whilst I was there.

Well at least we know that Mundine is best in class for something; he is a world class fool.

What Aboriginal people aren't allowed to travel?
