I must have missed the notification!

Didn't miss anything. I checked out the websites of a number of participants before and after the "frenzy", and the prices were the same.

Talk about kids scattered far and wide! Two of my boys work for Melbourne AFL cub, one is the Media Manager and one works in the Football Department. They are at the national draft in the Gold Coast this week, and next week are off with the team to Kakadu. They will both go on a 32km trek with the team, and both will finish as they are very fit.

Also next week a daughter is off to Perth and the Pilbura for a couple of weeks work. And finally another daughter to Hawaii on holiday. Normally we have four of our seven at home (plus a partner). There will only be one for over a week. I'll be forced to talk to Mrs Blinky. :)

Time to book a solo flight somewhere! ;)

Some interesting campaigns being mounted by our media outlets at the moment, the vile being launched at click frenzy is one, the other is the ongoing campaign by fairfax against tinkler, its getting a bit like the NT Times, if there is not a story about a croc in the times and Tinkler in the SMH then something really serious is happening!

Ah the NT News. Far from the last bastion of insane news coverage in Australia.

And as an aside, Yield Managers are the bane of my existence!

Totally on topic but not thread worthy.

I achieved my first proper BIS airline status yesterday... VA SG.

Nothing compared to many here but made an effort to book the right flights, take advantage of VA's $200 J fares and throw in a couple of work trips and it all worked out.

If only I could match it to give me *G... :)

All thanks to this forum for giving the tips and tricks to get there!

You never considered VA Silver to be "proper"? :p

Anyway, well done! Looks like you've done it quite efficiently as well.

Now the universal next challenge: (a) going up (if it suits), or (b) retaining.

Well I was only Silver for about a week and we all know Silver doesn't mean much. :)

In the Virgin MKY lounge waiting for my travelling partner to arrive on Qantas.

The wifi is working but the fluro army and their Windows 2000 laptops can't get it to work, so they've spent the last hour fiddling with the base station and now they've actually broken it. Grrrr

I'm surprised that wifi can be used on Windows 2000.

Luckily the connection method to most public wifi areas is open (no password) connection on 802.11abgn. Getting Windows XP to work with WPA authentication is a PITA.

Incredible the difference between two agents at QF.

#1 - Advise I want to change dom Multi-City fare. Quotes fare diff + change fee + service fee. Make the point I can't change online + had it waived last time - says not possible, recites T&Cs and states it is clear when booking. Fair enough, though she was a bit surly about it. Said I will consider (lol) and hang up.

#2 - Advise I want to change dom Multi-City fare & say I can't change online, asks for details of what I want changed, says not to worry about service fee, is very helpful, gets the exact fare I want ($20 extra for 20SCs extra...yes please!) and also changes my brother's simple return over the phone with no fuss and again, no service fee!

Moral of the story, as always...just hang up and try again.

Another evening in the BNE J Lounge - another delayed departure.....

I can't see JohnK anywhere though!!!!!

After flying 21,948 miles on 7 flights and visiting 4 countries over 12 days I am finally home. The jetlag isn't so bad. I think flying PE helps and one leg flying First definitely helped.

The show went well and a visit to one of my suppliers in Japan was good as well. One Air New Zealand branding campaign from 2002 was titled Being there is everything, interesting advert I found from Youtube. pretty much sums up my thoughts of the trip. You get a lot of respect from your suppliers and your customers for just turning up to a show 10,000 miles away.

It was great to catch up with a few AFFers in London, maybe we all had a few more drinks than we should have but it was a fun night and who can complain when the prices are actually cheaper than back in Australia.

BA First was nice, in some ways it is better than Qantas First, but overall the experience on both airlines had good and not so good points. The private dining area of the Concorde Lounge was nice certainly different to that of the Qantas First Class Lounge in Sydney or Melbourne.

It was great to catch up with 3 other AFFers this morning on my final flight up to Brisbane on QF19. Interesting if you are earlier than the person that you are guesting into the lounge you can leave their name with the person at the door and also with the staff at the front desk at the top of the escalator. Something that I always thought possible but has never been explained before. There were a couple of interesting discussion points during our conversation this morning. Also nice when the lounge staff recognize me.

Brought myself a sim card for Europe so I was able to text family and friends(AFFers) who had Imessage on their mobiles but I made sure to check what time it was back home before texting. Having a local sim card and Imessage means that you are using only a bit of data and no call costs for the messages. the local sim is handy for displaying maps as I got a little lost one night but with the local sim card just fire up the IPhone and check my location.

My first ever free upgrade on Qantas from economy to Premium economy on my flight home last night was fantastic, first ever upgrade on Qantas, my only other free upgrade happened 5 years ago flying back to Australia ex Narita on JAL on a Qantas codeshare.

We, my dad and I had a spare day in Japan yesterday where we did a run on the Shinkansen to Odawarra to visit a castle, next need to try the Maglev in Shanghai, also had time to visit the Bank of Japan currency museum, wiki needs updating and the Tokyo Stock Exchange(TSE), both providing some information in English to explain a bit about themselves. The Japanese Yen wasn't formed until 1871 so a rather young currency than I would have thought.

Very clear day in Tokyo for 2 days, cars are running cleaner fuels and I guess the industry has changed as well which certainly helps. The Tokyo subway was efficient and clean; I have never seen anywhere in the world where someone would vacuum the stairs of the local subway station.

A few photos are up on Facebook and I will get around to adding a trip report before the end of the year. Now time for bed.
