Hoof and hook?
There was a bit of an upset here a few years back when one of the local high schools with an Agriculture elective entered stock the students had raised. Unfortunately the kids didn't realise it was in the hoof and hook category and were terribly upset.

Hoof and hook?
It’s a variation on that concept.

As it was explained to me, entrants in this particular category have to have a pretty big operation.

The category is judged a week or two before the show and the Show Society buys thousands of kilos from whoever is crowned champion.

This is then offered as a “champion tasting plate”.

I was a long time member of the Stud Beef section at the Maitland Show. I was the recording director for many years. The young guys took down all the results and I did a commentary. When the Grand Parade was on I was the commentator of the cattle sections.
However I will never forget my first year on the Stud Beef section. The Hoof and Hook judging was done a week before at the Maitland abbatoirs. Some of the old hands set me up by telling me that my job was getting the cattle into the Shute to go into the abbatoir. The first lot was some wild Angus that hadn’t seen a man for a year or two. I hadn’t realised I could jump that high to get over the fence as they charged me.

I had a family member followed over the fence by a Hereford bull many years ago, on a family property in Qld. Luckily for her, the bull was more interested in a different group of females!

Melbourne could not have put on better weather for my visit this week. I’m now staying at the Cullen Art Series Prahran. Fabulous price as an Accor ALL member, so I paid only $20 more for be in the junior suite for my two nights!

There is a full penthouse to one side of me, and the gym’s terrace on the other.

My terrace looks over to Prahran Markets, but there is the obligatory car park to the rear right, although it doesn’t really seem hugely popular with the supermarket shoppers! I’m off to buy bread and orange juice for breakfast.
