TV series discussion {'ware Spoiler Alert}

Recently finished watching Midnight Sun on SBS Online. Nordic Crime Noir at its best. I was half expecting it to sub-titles but was actually largely in english.

Last night finished watching series 3 of The Fall. This is an excellent crime drama set in Ireland.

I just started watching The Killing on Netflix. Yet another crime series which so far looks good.

Midnight Sun was pretty good though like all Nordic noirs it had so many red herrings it was almost impossible to follow. I liked the first season of the Killing but thought the subsequent one was not as good.
A bit like Peaky Blinders - enjoyed the first season but just couldn't get into the second one.

Just finished all the episodes of Black Mirror - Loved it. Great that each episode is individual, so you don't have to remember the story line if you don't come back to it until a few weeks have passed. Next - The Expanse

But all episodes are connected by tiny threads! Some people have tried to construct timelines from the clues.

We're watching Travelers on Netflix. If you remember Continuum it's similar and involves time travel (of a sort) to try and fix things. I'm liking it but I've seen about six episodes and I'm not sure how they can maintain it for a lot more. Shot in Vancouver masquerading as Seattle (I think) as usual.

Sometimes I think sbs is a waste of tax payers money, actually I think that a lot, sbs viceland for example? I can't see in anyway, shape or form how that conforms to their charter, nor it it relative to our 'normal life' in anyway.

Over on main sbs we are enjoying "Midnight Sun" and also "Spring Tide", another nordic crime series..

I joke with my Swedish friends that Sweden is way too dangerous for any sane minded person to visit.
Guess I like these as it brings back lots of good memories of scandinavia, not the murdering parts though!

Watched the end of Bkack Widows (SBS on demand). It was ok IMO but wonder if there will be a series 2 as left up in the air. Interestingly a couple of faces from the old Unit One were in it.

Being a niche market I'm guessing the advertising revenues might help off-set the cost of programming on their more 'regular' channels? I wonder how many people actually watch 'Adam looking for Eve' for example, how much SBS pays, and what they get back in advertising.

Vice produce (and have for a long time before the Viceland channel itself) cutting edge documentaries that many people enjoy.

Finished Travelers, if you like sci-fi in the everyday world then you'll probably like it. Started on The Expanse which is set a few hundred years into the future and explores the lives and politics of people on Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt. Have seen three episodes, not 100% sure about it yet. Struggle to understand the dialogue a lot of the time. We considered turning the subtitles on last night but aren't prepared to admit our age to that extent yet - heck, we've still got kids in school!

I like SBS. Great movies, fabulous documentaries. If it wasn't for SBS would we have SBS on Demand which is brilliant with about 500 movies alone.
Yes, there might be some cough but show me a station (paid or free) that doesn't have cough.

I guess I should have expanded a little, when SBS first started I really enjoyed it, no pay tv then, 1 ABC channel and the 3 commercials. They used to show overseas programmes in the evening as per this great list of previous shows on wiki. I especially liked all the foreign language films shown.

I realise that budget cuts have made a huge impact and therefore quality programming has dropped, imo.

Then gradually they seemed to replace these foreign language programmes with a lot more documentaries and current affair programming and also to a lot of people, it became know as "soccer bloody soccer". Fine if that's your thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_Special_Broadcasting_Service go down to 'former programming' and see what they used to show. A lot of good stuff on that list.

Viceland, I don't regard myself as a prude, but surely they could have come up with a better name that this. I realise there is always a niche market for a lot of what they show.

We stopped the movie package we had, we really only had it for World Movies, but how many times do you want to see 'emmanuelle' let alone 1, 2, 3 and you get the picture. Same with the 'Story of O', for a while they seemed to be showing that on constant repeat.

Recently I saw that they showed, "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie", funny movie, seen it several times, but a 'world movie'? not in my opinion.

I agree about all stations showing cough, hard to avoid, I'm waiting until about 2030 when we get nbn in our area, then maybe I'll try to stream more and use 'on demand' services, but at the moment it just doesn't seem to work very well here. Probably I'm doing something wrong, upgraded to a new superduper wifi modem, but honestly things haven't changed.

I guess also in my defence, I tend to make some throw away comments and they loose context over a keyboard. The boss hates this and also hates my sarcasm!

Anyway I couldn't live without my pvr and iq box, record, replay and fast forward through the adds and cough.

Tonight is Spring Tide, which has been worthwhile, along with Midnight Sun, as I said in the earlier post.

Emmanuelle and Story of O. - memories of my younger days and the drive-in.

Peter Capaldi has announced this will be his final year as the doctor.

Dr Who: Peter Capaldi to play Doctor no more from end of this year

I read that earlier today. A good actor but I don't think the role was quite the fit for him. Interest in our house has been waning since the mid-years of Matt Smith but may have reached a terminal decline during PC's time. It's probably the writing though. There's the odd good episode but not many now.

It's also been off the air for a long time (Xmas episode excepted) so the return is not as anticipated as it usually is. Let's hope it returns to something approaching the glory days.

I wish the new doctors would stay around as long as the classic doctors did. I was still getting used to him. Perhaps someone new will be better but it's a whole lot of adjusting to go. I thought that since Peter Capaldi had wanted to play the doctor for so long he'd stick around a lot longer than the other new doctors.

I've just realised, the new showrunner will have to create a new doctor again. Steve Moffat took over just as Matt Smith appeared and now it's happening again. Good luck Chris.

Started watching Sens8 on Netflix last night but gave up half way through the first episode. Not sure what put us off but the sight of Martha from Doctor Who engaging in ... well let's not go there.
