Any ideas on the Cab Malbec? I quite like a good Clare Cab Malbec. Leasingham Bin 56 springs to mind from days gone by. OK with a few years to mellow.

Should be Jeanneret 'Westward We Went'. Has been offered before.

Atlas 32 was mentioned last time this one was here too, but I'm not sure whether it was confirmed either way. They only list the 2011 on their (very basic) web site, so very little to go on there apart from price.

Edit: OK, more likely to be Jeanneret - matches with the Halliday "dark horse" mention. Also same price.

As it's a restocked item, it's likely that it has been revealed here before. You just need to take a moment and do a search.

Its also been discussed here:

And not even actually bad, just not as good as other years eg 2010. We've had some really lovely 2011s.... more for us I guess.

Barossa was pretty dreadful in 2011, wet, disease rampant (rots, moulds etc), mix of ripe/under-ripe fruit etc.

In every bad vintage there are good wines made by people on the best sites with good viticulturists and good winemakers. But they are fairly hard to find and if you have good/great vintages either side (2010/2012) why would you take the risk?

Because you miss out on some gems.

There weren't any gems in the Barossa 2011 reds I've tried, well maybe one out of 50. I like my averages quite a bit higher than that.
With 2,500+ wineries in Australia it's generally not hard to find some regions that have godd/very good vintages in any given year, we have a pretty big country.

Even with good vintages in Western Aus and McLaren Vale being better than Barossa my total buy of 2011 reds was about 120, compared to around 500 for each of 2010 and 2012.

I've sometimes tried picking good wines from tough vintages (SA 2003/2007, Coonawarra 2002, Marg River 2002/2003) and the results down the track a bit are not all that great.

If you are not sure on this one, I can give it a good recommendation. I had it in the Ace Pack and on Vivino said:

"Day 1 - it's a fruit bomb. Not surprising given the grapes and age. I detect some nice tannins, so suspect there is a nice wine in there. Day 2 - what a lovely balanced wine. Not a long finish, but it is a classy tasting affair. For the mof_ price paid, it's an excellent wine."

Hope that helps. Just give it some air time if you do buy some. Enjoy ...

Thanks Dr Ralph. Hey Wozza, I see you really liked this one from your review. Getting on it?

Hi Buzz. I did like it. Great Fo value for the taste experience. However, the very nice Mr Anonymous Coward has got me a fancy new Langtons broker, so I am keeping my credit card powder dry for a week or so to see if I can get (slightly close) to the Seat 1A drinking habits of our esteemed AC ...!!

Ps: the Cullen matched perfectly with the tasty cheese and Woolworths own baked beans

So, I will only do a little review on my initial (virgin) experiences with the Cullen DM 08 [for fear Dr Ralph will track me down, get me struck off, thus leaving me penniless and unable to buy these fine, fine wines, which in turn will mean I can't clog up this Fo purchase thread with this unnecessary (no-Fo) banter ...!!] :

The Cullen DM 08 is exceptional (unlike the Parker FG 08 that was slow to blossom), this was off the hook good, from the go. And it matched perfectly with my wife's spud, tasty cheese and Woolworths own baked beans!! The topping was my culinary genius! I have already uploaded my Vivino opinion:

"This is pure class in a glass. If Queen Elizabeth II was a wine - this would be it. It's understated royalty, exuding real pedigree. It's drinking well now, like HM 20 years ago, but will easily evolve into one of the best wine monarchs of our generation. It's very expensive, but well worth it."

This is the real deal, and well worth it's beyond ostentatious price tag.

Vivino 4.5 Stars (in my humble opinion)
