If there is a risk this could backfire on us, then lets not go there. I have found everything I've needed to know with a bit of searching and I'm only new around here, learning the ropes. Yes, it would be nice to have it all indexed at our finger tips, but it will come to nothing if the quality and variety of offer gets reduced.

VM and other merchants doing mystery deals tell the wineries it "will be offered discretely".
But to move the wine they need to give some positive details that are not just their own opinion, usually making it fairly easy to identify.

While there are producers who believe the story and/or need to move stock fairly urgently the deals will continue.

Some who have been quickly identified from early on (Hewitson comes to mind) keep coming back with more offers. Some have been quite shocked when their own mailing list members email/phone to complain/query and never come back.

Don't forget that the usual difference between ex-winery price and RRP is about 50% or more in some case. (Up to 40% for distributors who do marketing/sales, 20%-30% for retailer), so with a lesser VM margin they aren't selling at a loss, just quicker with less profit.

As big as VM has become (300,000+ members?), it's still a small player in the ocean of wine sales.

Long time lurker and VIM - greatly appreciative of all the hints I have received from everyone as to the identity of the black market and secret deals.

First time posting and really wanted to give some love to the Star Lane Merlot that was recently offered (seems to have flown under the radar in this forum).

Despite the countless dozens of great wine I have purchased through VM over the years, I can't remember being as excited about receiving a case as I am in anticipating the 2012 vintage arriving at my door. I'm not generally a fan of straight merlot, but the 2005 Star Lane was one of my first great wines when I started my wine collection/addiction, so I'm hoping that the cracking 2012 vintage will deliver some more happy memories.

By the by, if anyone is in Perth and is unhappy with their Churchview Zinfandel, I'd be happy to take it off your hands - I was so disappointed to find out that it was offered while I was travelling overseas and not diligently checking my e-mails...

If it's a VIM deal, these are only available to VIM's.

If they don't sell out, they often become available to everyone.

Welcome Tanny15. I don't think you will be disappointed. I have no idea how to re-post my 3 posts on the Star Lane 2012, but if you search Star Lane Merlot those posts come up. It's very fruity, as you would expect from a straight Merlot, but it's a very classy Merlot. Enjoy, and please do let others here know if it was as good as you had hoped / better or worse than the 2005 ...

I do remember Wine Planet fondly, multiple signup deals and a very good sale when they folded. But the Heritage wines ( wineforlife) sell off was even better.

Personally I think an investment in joining RBs site is an extremely good one!

Got my Tomich Reserve Pinot today (took 20 days). Have already emailed to return. I couldn't even finish 1 glass. The description sounded like my perfect wine. I can't quite nail the problem as i think its a few. Here Goes 1/ So focussed on structure they forgot the fruit. 2/ Tannins are unripe 3/ Fruit is underripe and almost hidden by acidity. If it was processed at 13.5 to 14% abv the acid would hardly be noticeable as the ripe fruit would balance it out perfectly and it would cellar really well. They tried to make an Ata Rangi in the wrong country and climate. I tried straight and decanted and aerated. A few years in the cellar would mellow it but it can't magically make the fruit appear. IMHO. I think I will steer clear of these cheap pinots from VM and hunt down real premium elsewhere.

I very much enjoyed the bottle of Tomich I had over the weekend.
I only kept 4/12 and could easily sell my remaining 3 but no way, I'm keeping them. Should add that I let it breath for about 2 hours.

1- To have a better chance of finding out what black market/ contraband deals are; and
2- To obtain members views on wines ( I either have not heard of or have never tried) and whether they recommend them or not.

So far the forum has delivered in spades - My thanks to members who have the courtesy to respond to queries about whether they like a wine or not. Normally I would never have purchased the Glen Lofty but thanks to Beefarmers response I did. A good easy drinking wine( immediately) at a great price. The commentary on Pinots has stopped me buying any to date ( at least within my limited price frame) . I look forward to seeing more comments for people to help others - I will also give my basic opinion such as I did on the Petaluma Pinot ( when I found a review) and on the Haselgrove .

I am not comfortable however when talk revolves around cheating someones system - To obtain decent wines at the price VM sells them for is reward in itself. I have been a member of VM for over 4 years. In that time have had some fantastic wines at great prices and I hope they keep coming.

As I was packaging up 2013 Tomich Reserve Pinot this morning I noticed how light the bottles are and how thin the carton is and just plain cardboard and it all seems to be a case of "mutton dressed up as lamb". I thought about the wine some more and I would add that perhaps the vineyards are overworked. Pinot performs best with fruit thinning to under 2 metric tonnes per acre (or close density planting to regulate fruit) or you end up with wines like this one. (this wine may have been a commercially driven decision at the expense of quality). I would like to know the vine yield for this wine. I like a Pinot with structure and spice not over confected. I realise all palettes are different. I just purchased 18 bottles of Ata Rangi 2013 as a long term prospect as thats where my palette lies. (Tried 1 and its very Good)

No, it is not worth anything like $45 RRP IMHO but for $14 or whatever it was, I think it makes for a reasonable summer drinking wine with a light lunch. I actualy had it for dinner one night with spag bol. Perhaps I liked it because it was "different".
The beauty though of buying from the Fo is that you can try one or even two bottles and simply return the rest if it is not for you.
I do not condone rorting the system by doing this but it does give you the opportunity to try something and make up your own mind. Who knows, you might get a pleasant surprise.
