Vinomofo Wine Deals

Mine is going back, had better wine for half the price from the Fo...

If it was $10-$12 bottle then I'd be more likely to keep it, but this one has been one big disappointment to be honest.

All hype, no substance

I cracked a bottle last night with the very good intention of leaving it for tonight. Of course good intentions went out the window an hour later, mostly due to the juicy colour and the smell calling me from across the room. A taste was had, followed by a glass, followed by another. I do love the strong fruit in the Mitolo wines, that is what grabbed me from the very first Mitolo I drunk, and whilst there is a strong fruit presence this one lacked the punch I'd come to expect from their wines. Whilst a decent drop it is, the flavour is good, it seems to lack the coming together of the flavours it's aspiring to, and the alcohol was far too present for my liking.

Cue a day later and that aspect has mellowed. I like the wine, I'm tempted to keep it, but a $68 wine it isn't, a $20 price tag is closer to the mark. The GAM Shirazs I spent $50 a bottle on recently was worth the price and to suggest this wine outranks the GAM is an insult.

This wine seems to be the most divisive since the Glenlofty SV (my latest gravy wine). I'll finish the bottle and rest on it before making the call. But it's likely it'll stay.

Opened my first Mitolo last night and was frankly thoroughly unimpressed. Promising berry and chocolate on the nose and a beautiful colour, but the pallet just didn't deliver. I aerated, I stirred, but not a lot there to my taste. Some pepperiness and reasonable length, but meh overall, a flat and quite closed wine.

I have left it open and will see what 24 hours brings, but not holding out a lot of hope for this one. $20 maybe, perhaps not for me. $68, are you kidding? At that sort of price I will stick to the likes of Seppelt St Peters, as I have for the best part of 20 years now.

. JH may have given it a 94, but that was probably after he drank all the four glasses available for testing.

I think JH gives an extra 5 points to any Aussie pinot. Like Aussie film critics always have always given an extra star to any Australian film, like some kind of prize just for making an effort at all. Personally I've given up on Australian pinot entirely as being overpriced and underwhelming (though have had some great NZ ones).

For anyone interested I assume the Halliday 95 point Cabernet 2010 that's on at the moment is the one you'd find here:

Estate Reserve

Interestingly the price from the winery is $5.05 more expensive than the RRP quoted in the actual Halliday review. Maybe they would argue that's for bottle age.

And then, here's something a bit odd. There's a JH 94 point shiraz, $30 down to $13.90, and I'd have assumed it was this one.

Glen Eldon Wines · Wines

What's remarkable is that the winery is claiming a $50 RRP. That is $20 more than either VM or Halliday say is the RRP.

Of course I may also be wrong. VM say it's Barossa Valley, and Eden Valley is, well not Barossa Valley (but it is Barossa Zone, and VM are not known for their exactitude are they?)

Unlikely to be Glen Eldon, I thought this one was the McGuigan Shortlist again, with a slightly different price, but gave up on the wine companion site for a wider check due to too many 500-internal server errors.

Ah well, that could be true -- they do say that it's one they've had a previous vintage of. Cheers Red.

Not sure what all the angst is re Mitolo?
Sure it's not worth $68 but I think it's pretty bloody decent for $20, and don't really see any deception on VM part.
To me it has quite an Italianate feel, I see more acidity than I do alcohol, and reasonably dense fruit.
I wouldn't be surprised if this tastes really good in 3-4 years.
Certainly wont be sending mine back for $20pb. To each their own!

Thursday I'm going to try my first Mitolo. Friends who are coming on the Clare tour are staying with us so I'll get a few opinions. Regardless of what the RRP is, if its worth what I paid, I'll keep it.

Good idea - I don't think any of us take RRPs too seriously here (does anyone think the VM Wolf Blass Grey Label is really worth $45/bottle given you can get it for $30 in any DM?). Not sure why people are hung up on the Mitolo RRP - we all know that just about every wine sells at a 20%+ discount to this. Better to focus on amount paid IMHO

I agree, for a $20 wine its quite good and worth keeping.
Night three for my bottle and it seems to keep improving.

Do you think it's worth leaving in an open decanter for a couple of days before drinking?
I've enjoyed it all three nights, the flavour has changed but I don't think any one night was "worse". I don't think I'd leave it open that long. I've left it in the bottle with the lid on when not in use. I'm a little sad there is only one glass left (lucky I'm home alone!).

Aksherley I took 3 days to finish mine ( a tad unusual) .
It was , IMsnHO ….best on day one breathing in the bottle for a few hours and chilled a tad.
Day two it was a bit ragged ( left with the cap screwed back on ) but drinkable
Day three was quite rank , only one glass left so finished it as penance for buying it in the first place

OT but is there a correlation between quality and longevity after opening ?

OK, so the Mitolo is a significantly better wine on night two. I left the bottle open for 24 hours. The fruit is more forward and it still has some of the pepperiness and the length of the first night. It comes together to be a very pleasant, medium bodied wine, certainly worth the $20ish a bottle.

I know there has been some conjecture about the validity of RRP, but it is my view that all wines need to be judged against this, as well as what they can potentially be discounted to. Using my example of Seppelt St Peters, its RRP is about $80 these days, but discounted you will be very lucky to see it below $55 at any time. If Mitolo are, by the supposed RRP of $68, trying to say that this wine is in that sort of league, they are absolutely kidding themselves.

Whereas my bottle was very lovely to drink on night 3. Not sure a wine should be "rank" after 48 hours.
