To report on recent arrivals Black Market Rose is LongLine Bimini Twist McLaren Vale Rosé 2015. Too extracted & sweet for mine. Will give it another go ice-cold on a hot day to see if my impression improves. But I think McLaren Vale don't even contemplate delicate wines ...

WayWood McLaren Vale Montepulciano 2014 is my sort of wine - fleshy, rich, medium bodied little ripper.

The NZ mixed pinots have started nicely. The Rock Ferry is really good. I was a little suspicious because their stuff has been discounted all over the place. But next time any of their more highly rated wines pop up I'll be in.

Eagerly awaiting the Domaine du Penlois Morgon 2014. Pity the pickers/deliverers are "slacking off" at Xmas/New Year.

Photos of Ulithorne DONA 2014 on Nick's and the winery site show Stelvin cap. JH review also says screwcap. The 2013 was under cork and was quite OK at the VM price, if you like a somewhat lighter style of GSM. I was turned away by the mention of cork, but will now seriously consider if VM confirm screwcap instead of cork (have about $60 in credit at the moment).

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this, I've always wondered what a pricey Gamay brings to the table, instead of the usual slop we can buy here.

Had a lovely French Gamay at La Buvette a couple of weeks ago. It was delicious, complex & whilst very drinkable, lasted 2 of us a whole night through dinner. I think that's actually a good barometer of quality wine - it stays in the glass longer! (Sorry didn't think to make a note of what it was but I remember it had a modern type label, some predilection for bucking tradition - may just have to re-visit ). This preceded the VM Domaine du Penlois Morgon offer by only a few days. So I dived in as soon as I'd satisfied myself that it had a strong chance of being as good as they say. Ordered 19/12 ETA 6/1. Still, I won't die of thirst in the meantime.

Thanks, AC. I spoke with Rose K, who, as we know, sold Ulithorne a few months ago. She said that the wine was bottled under Diam for export, but that the order must have fallen through. She was quite upbeat about the wine. I may well take a chance on it, as I enjoy the more elegant style over rich, plummy wines.

I think they make these RRPs up - it's not sold anywhere in Australia AFAIK, so has no set "RRP" - it's a notional value that VM make up, and bears no resemblance to the actual price it's available back in Europe.

That said, any import (outside the well known, established labels) has a significant mark-up in Aus, due to the cost of shipping, importing and holding wine that doesn't fly off the shelves. VM have had the same issue with their recent horde of NZ wines - many of which don't seem to be retailed here in Aus. Their RRPs are well above the cellardoor price in NZ, but obviously there's a cost to arranging import of the stuff.

Agreed AC - but I found the decanter review too much to ignore, though difficult to find. They seem to have had a significant boost in quality out of nowhere even if it was a "dream vintage" - here's 2013 notes

And I certainly agree that the RRP's are notional at best in these circumstances. Hard to evaluate with any great accuracy, but their 2011 is/was around £12.20. So given the rate of exchange, probable price increase over time, export costs & returns, I think $25 is great value - if it is even close to 97 point platinum standard - that has to beat a Halliday 96? We'll see, shall report after tasting (surely before next Friday VM? )

Thanks for going to the trouble of reporting back on some the VM arrivals you've sampled, it saves fellow AFFers having to purchase completely blind (and I don't mean drunk!). The Monte from Waywood sounded intriguing to me after reading the initial release notes, I'm more of a full-bodied than medium kinda guy but that opinion can easily be swayed by the right wine especially with a few VM credits floating around at the moment.

FWIW I actually figured out the Black Market Cab Merlot that just landed in my in-box https://vinomofo.com/wines/red-wine/black-market-deal-cabernet-merlot-2015? and it's the Miles from Nowhere 2015 that has garnered much bling but I seem to recall there not being all that much love for it on this fine forum, it's a cheapie at $8.90 but if I chop off another $35 worth of credits it's only $6.00 a bottle, does anyone have any quick thoughts as it is "selling crazy fast"?
