Luckily VA points hardly expire (they need 3 years), and lucky for VA, some may just end up being written off as breakage, so bonus for the company. At least VA isn't looking to boost prices or charge fuel for now, so most have enough time to muster up an idea.
VA are going hard on the points give away; now with their NAB home loan Velocity points give away of 250,000 points.

Your referral link got my love Steady - enjoy the points!
Most here are (or should be) aware of that. Others outside may not see the whole F or J seats thing at all, and just book Economy seats. Mind, since VA doesn't charge fuel, getting a very cheap Y redemption right off the bat on the card signup bonus (e.g. to the USA) is attractive enough a proposition for many people.
110k points is 7 return flights of either BNE/SYD or SYD/MEL, after throwing in about $30 each time. Some might find that already attractive.
Quite a few of us here would understand the frequent flier points game esp with respect to long haul premium awards, however there will be people who won't be as savvy or up to speed and will need help. This will remind me a bit about USDM 4-5 years ago where people were buying points - expecting premium travel - but didn't have any flexibility, couldn't get the exact routes they wanted, just an entire family to occupy a cabin but had no luck and were coming here and elsewhere to say how useless or ripped off they were.
Fingers crossed some people use it on domestic flights rather than those elusive J/F flights that I am after
The destinations for the Velocity card free flights is pretty **** compared to Platinum edge card. No Perth-MEL.Just tried to book the free flight from Amex without success. Apparently, outside of the "golden triangle" routes where there are lots of seats available, more regional destinations require at least 3 weeks notice for booking. Not happy...
Yeah I got my friend to sign up, who's currently living in Perth and needs to fly to MEL for a wedding this weekend, however the grand final is on and flights are roughly $1k or more for return trip PER-MEL. Got him to sign up assuming MEL was on the list of destinations for free flights from PER and so he could use the free flights to fly during this weekend. I was wrong. Don't know why the airlines are ripping off PER travellers this weekend compared to BNE-MEL which are only a few hundred for return flights.Hi Guys,
Unfortunately i havent had any love with my referral yet. not to worry.
Just an fyi - i managed to use my free flight for a syd-perth booking today which pays for the annual fee. seems like it depends on which customer service officer you get on the phone as i was told no earlier in the day.
incase anyone needs a referral, here is mine. https://www316.americanexpress.com/...merHub&MGMURN=AAAABgQMHRIUCQ==&CPID=999999484

Ripping off is probably too strong of a word, but maybe "over charging". Just didn't take into account the Eagles getting to the finals for the price hike. Anyways, he looked a couple months ago at prices and was stunned at how much it cost compared to normal. I got him to apply a few weeks ago and knew it was a long shot if they would give out the free flights for this weekend. Just didn't know MEL was not on the destinations for PER on the Plat Velocity Amex for free flights. Oh well, atleast we'll both get points out of this experiment.Frankly I would have been amazed if the free flight was available this weekend PER - MEL considering a Perth team has made the AFL Grand Final. I don't think they are ripping off PER customers but rather responding to market forces. This season there was always a possibility that a Perth team would make the AFL GF and perhaps your friend should have planned accordingly.
There might be a few thousand people with 100,000 or more points through the signing up of these cards - and the dream to fly J or F is probably the reason behind it - but a lot of those folks will be disappointed (and maybe come here, sign up and whinge why they can't book a premium seat) when they can't be flexible or want the whole family to be flying up front. Points is great but when one doesn't understand the pros/cons of booking premium seat, then they will be sorely frustrated in due course.
