Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Went for my first J jaunt today on DJ523 SYD-OOL. Great service from the Cabin Supervisor.

I believe today was the switch over and on my flight 'twas lunch service. They had on offer either Shepherd's Pie or an Asian Salad with Tofu. I'm not big on Shepherd's Pie so I picked the salad and was quite happy with it.. I think it's hard to make a salad look impressive :) It had a really nice flavour imo and I like tofu (and this was a very nice smooth tofu as well) as well so I have no complaints whatsoever.

For dessert, they had a mini carrot cake style thing that had cinnamon in it and cream cheese icing on the top. I can be bribed with the mere hint of cinnamon so I really wolfed that one down :) Anyways, here are the piccies.

It's a short flight, but the carrot cake looks a little...lame. You'd think they'd dress it up somehow. OTOH, salad presentation is good IMO

Drink cans on tray is a big no no for me. All drinks should be poured in the galley and hand delivered - this goes for refills as well.

I had drinks delivered on the tray recently as a glass with ice and an unopened can of coke. In contrast, for the flight before that my meal was delivered with two filled glasses (water and soft drink) which were inconstantly refilled.

Admittedly I didn't provide a full tray picture so you just see a bit of the can - the glass came out already filled with drink & ice and the can was next to it. I don't mind refilling it myself :) Later on, I was asked afterwards if I wanted another drink so that would have been hand-delivered as the trays had been cleared away at that stage but I was quite full and settled :P

Fair enough, that not so bad then.

Btw, I meant 'consistently refilled' in my rrevious post.

The presentation of the dessert is the same on QF with the cake in its wrapper sitting in the bowl. The salad looks good but its a bit small in size but I understand that DJ has a much smaller galley in its 737s than QF which limits what they can offer.

It annoys me that everything on 737J is served in bowls. QF doesn't do this.
Surely it wouldn't be hard or space consuming to use plates, presentation would be so much better.

Yesterday ... SYD-MEL we had the smoked trout with potato salad (same as entree found on A330) or cheese platter for snack. Load was 5/8, a few of us were enjoying the '09 "Sister's Run" shiraz - thus FA handed out a bottle each to the two of us. Quite nice for a $20 screw top.

That would be an aberration as the cheese plate is normally served on a 12cm entree plate. As for the drinks, the requirement is that no can's or bottles be allowed in the cabin except upon request of the guest.

Out of interest, does anyone actually have the list of requirements or rules for J services?? It seems some of you are well informed. ;)

Has it changed within the last month?
because I regard this as more or a bowl than a plate

Jousams, be assured I never doubted what you said, it just didn't match with what is "meant" to happen. It sure doesn't have the same standard of presentation as the plate, though how do you make two bits of cheese a few grapes and packet of water crackers look WOW I don't know. Let's hope it was a one off...I'll be keen to watch.

Hmm, that seems quite impractical for cheese - one generally needs to be able to get the knife close to horizontal to effectively slice cheese.

Don't get me started on those Marc Newson designed plates with their narrow underbase - more than once I have seen the cheese/biscuits/grapes/etc. fly!

Today's DJ697 MEL/PER in the A330. My virgin experience on the A330 - brilliant, is there any other way to fly?? Chose 2K.
