Virgin Australia Delays/Cancellations

The HKG down to MEL redeye VA68 (A332 VH-XFD) should arrive in MEL as VA68 at 0908 hours, 38 late on Monday 17 December 2018.

Continuing with Monday 17 December 2018, VA824, the 0900 hours SYD down to MEL (B738 VH-VOP) had yet to become airborne as at 1006, so arrival will be at least 45 minutes late at 1120.

Much later on 17 December 2018, VA353 (2015 hours mid evening flight MEL - BNE, B738 VH-VUI) was in the sky at 2057, so anticipated arrival is 2157 hours, 32 minutes late.

On 18 December 2018, VA721 (1830 hours evening flight from ADL across to PER, F100 VH-FNN) took off at 1908 with suggested arrival at 1956 hours, 36 minutes late.

Another F100, VH-FSQ is on the 1835 hours BME =- PER VA1488. Arrival is forecast for 2147 mid evening, 37 late.

VA1433 PER-DRW departure scheduled for 0855 has been pushed back to 1025 with “unplanned aircraft maintenance”
At this stage ETA in DRW is at 1535 this arvo (90 minutes late)

VA684 PER-MEL is now listed to depart at 1120 (35 minutes late) and arrive at 1755 (35 minutes late)

VA560 PER-SYD (B738 VH-VUX) was airborne at 14 53, arrival is revised to 21 25, 65 late.

VA879 MEL-SYD (B738 VH-YFW) departed at 19 40, arrived to gate at 20 50, 55 tardy.

VA886 SYD-MEL (B738 VH-VOP) recently took off at 20 48, arrival is suggested at 20 07, 62 min behind.

VA543 SYD-OOL (B738 VH-YFF) left at 20 00, it should be arriving at 20 29, 59 min late.

VA569 SYD-PER (A332 VH-XFH) was airborne at 20 08, this means that it should be arriving to Perth around 21 51, 46 min behind the original schedule.

B738 VH-VUZ on the Thursday 20 December 1515 hours mid afternoon MEL - CBR VA277 took off at 1557 with suggested arrival at 1701, 41 late. This appears unrelated to the storms that have passed slightly south of Canberra (and are passing south and west of Sydney) this arvo.

Due to what looks from BOM to be a ferocious Thursday afternoon 20 December summer storm in Sydney, VA858 (the 1600 hours SYD down to MEL that took off only five minutes or so late at 1622 with B738 VH-YFT) has taken a most unusual route ex SYD, initially proceeding out to the Tasman Sea, then via Newcastle and Anna Bay, out to sea again, then rejoining the coast near Toukley and then bearing south to pass close by Mangrove Mountain{

No surprise that its arrival in MEL is expected at around 1815 hours, 40 late.

Continuing with a weather-disrupted Thursday 20 December 2018 afternoon in Sydney, VA862 (B738 VH-VUQ, the 1630 hours SYD down to MEL) took off at 1808 so arrival should be at 1929 hours, 84 late.

VA484 (1455 hours MCY to SYD that was airborne on time at 1509 with VH-VUK) is arriving at 1819 hours, 49 late.

VA859 was a little late in departing and arriving, with a fair bit of holding due to the weather.

As of 18:20 the lightning lights are still on so no action on the apron. Meant to be on a connection at 19:00 so will be holed up in the lounge for a while I expect...

Edit: Announcement in the lounge that airport ops have ceased for now due to wx. Though aircraft are arriving and departing.

Thanks. 'wx' is apparently an acronym for 'weather.'
Former job speak. Sorry! :)

Still visible lightning and the blue beacons are still going.

Has the weather travelled further South?
MEL seems pretty affected by delays currently

Probably flow on delays. Flying direct would've been the smarter choice today...

EDIT: It just got very dark again at SYD. Merry Christmas everyone!

It's an unexceptional, dull early evening in MEL. Many delays will be due to late arrivals ex SYD, and others may be due to ATC holding aircraft on the ramp in MEL because of the shocking weather in Sydney. Then other problems occur such as crews out of position, terminals beginning to run out of vacant gates due to aircraft sitting in MEL that ought be in the air...

VA168 from AKL to MEL has B738 VH-YIJ and should arrive at about 1859, 49 late after being in a holding pattern above Mt Baw Baw, Vic.

VA871, the 1730 hours MEL - SYD took off at 1855 with arrival suggested as 1955, an hour late for VH-VUS.

The CBR down to MEL VA278 has VH-VUZ and is arriving at 1910 hours, an hour late.

With the storms in SYD and the airport having been closed (at least for a while), VA162 from ZQN to SYD looks to be diverting to MEL. This 1620 hours departure has B738 VH-YIW and took off at 1632, on time. MEL arrival should be at about 1918, 158 minutes after passengers were meant to be about to alight in Sydney.

The 1635 hours HBA up to SYD, VA1535 (VH-YWA, B738) took off only about 10 minutes late at 1658 this afternoon but north of Goulburn, it has then turned back and looks to be diverting to MEL. This flight was due in SYD at 1825 so if it reaches SYD tonight will be hours late.

As at 1920 hours, while the earlier ferocious storm has passed through Sydney, another one is not far off. Joy of joys!

In more on a very stormy Thursday 20 December 2018 in Sydney, VA535 (1710 hours SYD - OOL) took off at 1926 with arrival for B738 VH-YFY likely at 1944 hours, 134 late.

VA180 from NAN down to SYD (B738 VH-YIH, the 1540 hours that took off at 1633) looks to be diverting to BNE (rather than OOL, which it is closer to). Arrival is estimated at about 1900 hours in BNE against the timetabled 1825 hours arrival in SYD.

The AKL - SYD VA146 (1600 hours that took off at 1741 with VH-YIO) is also doverting to BNE. Its arrival should be at around 2010, against its timetable that says SYD arrival at 1740.

These two VAi flights should just reach SYD tonight but if so, it won't be much before 2300 given the need to fuel in BNE.
