Not helped by how MEL had by 1900 hours on Thursday 8 August joined SYD as subject to single runway ops - thank you Silvia for the advice - VA239, the 1735 hours late afternoon MEL across to ADL operated by B738 VH-VOM - took off at 1926 with arrival suggested as 2006 hours, 96 late.

VA140 gfrom AKL to SYD is holding offshore so arrival should be 42 late at 0957 for B738 VH-YIH.

VA833, the Friday 9 August 2019 scheduled 1000 hours MEL - SYD was airborne at 1141 with arrival for B738 VH-VOL suggested as 1246 hours, 81 late.

In more on Friday 9 August, VA865 (1645 hours MEL - SYD) was cancelled, as was VA869, the 1715 hours. VA871 (the 1730 hours) is also canned, and so are VA879, the 1830 hours, VA883 (the 1900 hours), VA885 (1915 hours), VA887 (1930 hours) and VA899, the 2115 hours. AFFer Slyvia had already noted some of these, but more have been added.

There aren't that many left to cancel but who knows, they may join the others.

Hoteliers love such disruption.

While third party accommodation sites typically are not given access to an hotel's complete room inventory, a quick search of www.booking.om for Sydney Airport hotels on Friday 9 August (for a one night stay) showed of the modern type hotels (not Captain Cook Hotel Botany!), there were no rooms available under A$200 within cooee.

There were quite a lot of Sydney CBD hotels with vacancies, some of which were under A$200/night, but as Silvia pointed out this involves extra travel costs - for two people, probably the cheapest one could do it for on a return trip from frazzled failure to secure a flight at the airport to the hotel and back again would be not much change out of A$65, given that if using the train there's a station access fee payable (twice each) at the airport station(s).

Down in Melbourne it wouldn't surprise that no rooms available near the airport, but some under A$200 in places like Fawkner and Coolaroo some distance away.

Still on Friday 9 August, a rather pointless flight given the delay delay, but VA669 (B738 VH-YFC), the 1905 hours CBR - SYD took off at 2146 with suggested arrival 147 minutes late at 2232 hours. Quicker on a CBD to CBD basis to travel by train or drive.

VA891 (2000 hours MEL - SYD that took off at 2129) has B738 VH-YFU on Friday 9 August and should in theory be arriving at its gate at about 2234 hours, 69 late. However at 2234 it remained in a hold above Crookwell so will be arriving later than predicted.

VA437 from ADL to SYD has VH-VUU and is the 1825 hours up up and away at 2040. Like the flight above it was holding as at 2228 hours so SYD arrival will be well after the predicted 2238. Scheduled arrival is 2045.

Saturday 10 August has VA824, the 0900 hours SYD - MEL taking off at 1021 with arrival for B738 VH-VUV estimated as 62 late at 1137.

From a quick look SYD may again be on single runway (east-west) ops. Disastrous for timekeeping, but maybe not so bad on Saturday afternoon, later, when airline traffic is less. Winds at 1030 hours were gusting to 54kmh.

VA1, the 0930 hours SYD - LAX on Saturday 10 August (B773ER VH-VPE) took off at on runway 34L at 1114, so is at least an hour late. Winds had moderated to gusts of 33kmh by 1100.

A332 VH-VFG on VA83, the 1000 hours SYD - HKG had yet to depart as at 1105.

UPDATE: VA83 was airborne at 1152 with arrival suggested as 1902, 82 late.

Later on 10 August, VA1531 from HBA up to SYD (B738 VH-VUY) took off at 1027, only about 12 minutes late, but arrival is suggested as 1248, 58 late as it did a go around in SYD, and prior to that had to hold near Goulburn.

B738 VH-YFH on the CFS - SYD VA1162 is arriving 45 late at 1250 hours.

VA834 (1100 hours late morning SYD down to MEL, VH-YWE) took off at 1246 hours with arrival at 1404 hours, 89 minutes late.

With the late running VA83's (SYD - HKG) A332 rostered to operate 10 August's redeye from HKG to MEL, VA68, and then on Sunday 11 VA679 (0840 hours MEL - PER) and VA686 (1230 hours PER - MEL) all three of these flights are guaranteed to be late if the roster stays as is.

VA559 (1305 hours SYD across to PER) took off at 1433, so arrival for B738 VH-YFK is forecast for 1719 instead of 1620 hours.

The 1205 hours BNE down to SYD, VA946 was airborne at 1335, arriving at 1449, 69 late. Aircraft is VH-VUH.

VA36, the scheduled 2210 hours redeye on Friday 9 August did not point skywards until 0732 on Saturday 10, so SYD arrival is shortly at 1503 hours, 533 minutes behind schedule. Aircraft is B738 VH-YIS. Last night this aircarft had operated VA131 from DRW up to DPS, arriving at 2306, 46 minutes late, so it may have then become defective.
