Volcanic Ash flight disruptions June 2011

looks like QF are cancelling the ADL flights in the morning as well as stopping any further flights tonight:

"Flights to Adelaide have been suspended from 8.50 pm local Monday 13 June. Flights for Tuesday 14 June will be assessed overnight."

Does not look like the assessment took long:

JQ aswell. Virgin seems to remain as per normal.

Qantas flight disruptions 12 June (affects some trans tasman flights)

What are people's thoughts on this being cleared by Saturday? Flying Mel-adl Saturday morning...

Perhaps the name of this thread should be changed to "Mel, Tasmania and NZ Flight Disruptions June 2011?

Just landed QF451. Glad to be back in Melbourne

Same :) What a long day it was. I left MEL yesterday after a looong delay - and left SYD on the return today for a longer return. Bless the Virgin Lounge - that airport was a mess!

Good luck to everyone else who may still be stuck :(

Perhaps these are cancelled because aircraft are not where the need to be, so the knock on, is a few morning cancellations from Adelaide

Boarding as normal qf634. In 1D and new aircraft with personal ife so hopefully a good flight!Hope everyone gets home safely and expediently!

Glad to be home safely. Frankly, I've had far less smooth experiences in non-ash affected travel. QF634 left on time and great in flight service. Not quite a full flight, one spare seat in J (suprisingly) and one in Y (4C fwiw).

Of course, I'm meant to head to Mel again next weekend, so here's hoping the ash blows away properly by then.

yep thankfully I decided to check Facebook before hitting the sack, despite being told that flights would go ok at about 6:45 pm. Now rebooked onto 16:55 flight. I'm not sure if it is aircraft or ash but the person I spoke to did mention a second ash cloud....

Its the ash cloud as QF have a full airport when it comes to planes:

I alluded to ADL being a problem at 2PM yesterday afternoon based on the updated cloud forecast.

Looking at the latest report, there are going to be no movements in ADL for QF if they stick to a consistent policy, given the below images are 4PM and 10PM predictions.

The word at the Sydney business lounge is: "Adelaide Airport is closed to all flights. Reassessment at 1300hrs. There are no spare seats between SYD/ADL today if the service resumes. Please talk with the service desk regarding moving your flights to tomorrow or the next day (!). Qantas apologises on behalf of mother nature"

Another person was overheard saying that the met service says the cloud will likely be back over MEL before the last flight today has left. Not being having meteorological bone in my body (similar to weather reporters), I couldn't gauge if this was a tongue in cheek statement or serious.

I think you should be ok - I've just had a glance out the window of the plane and the fog looks fairly light. This was what it looked like before the sun came up:

And this after sunrise (photo doesn't really help!):

Its OK now, only light fog, oz-mark, if you need to be guested into the DJ lounge let me know, I am here for a few hours enjoying the coffee.

Qantas called me and re-booked me on Q134 Thursday! I was told that they were "not confident" that they would be operating trans-Tasman on Wednesday.

BIG thumbsup to LAN staff in Sydney - great to see a proactive, can-do attitude when faced with lots of confused passengers and the issue is not really their fault.

I arrived in Syd early this morning on a seperate one-way QF ticket with the latest info from lan.com (before I left MEL) being that the LAN SYD-AKL flight was delayed (inbound had still not left Santiago). Lobbed at the LAN checkin with my J ticket and the young bloke (Carlos) took me aside for a chat and said that even though they had not ticketed me from MEL, they would put me up in a local hotel whilst we awaited news of the next LAN flight (24 hours min). He said he had some alternatives to investigate so if I went and grabbed a coffee and popped back in 15 then he'd update me. I was just tucking into a snack and he came & found me to say he'd re-booked me on a J ticket with Sheep Shagger airways and was apologetic that it was not leaving until 6pm tonight. All in all, very happy with the service & attitude, still get to have my full day of meetings tomorrow in NZ and just have to wait n see if the return flight eventuates Thursday morning. Seems that Air NZ are still making the trans Tasman hops despite others not doing so.

So for the next 8 hours its chill out in the QF & NZ J lounges at Sydney.

Rang QF FF to double check, but I still get my full J SC's as per my original LAN ticket even though I am sleeping with the enemy for a few hours ;)

I've never been to the sheep shagger J lounge in SYD - is it any better than the QF pub? If not - might as well stay put

JQ7 to Sin today delayed 1:50 hours. Currently sitting in a very quiet F lounge in MEL. Not been here before, think its nicer (more intimate than SYD). Had a lovely bacon and eggs and a mimosa. I can't see where the spa is though?

Cheers

Spa at opposite end to dining area. Ask to see if you can get a treatment. Hope delay is only that..... this flight a little notorious

Thanks KitKat, found it :)

Yes I've heard this one is hardly ever on time so surprised they have managed to make up that much time given that the flight didn't get into SIN last night until after midnight. Will wait and see if it gets delayed any further.

Cheers

Anyone know when QF may announce they are extending the change/rebook waiver to flights on the 16th?

Travelling SYD-AKL on the 16th and want to be ready to rebook before the hoards :)
