What cheeses me off

the day isn't celebrated like it seems to be in the eastern states
I dont think its particularly celebrated in the east either. People like the day off, any public holiday is generally appreciated.

It generally marks the end of school holidays, just like Queens/Kings Birthday marks start of the ski season but i do not know anyone who does anything Aussie themed in Jan nor Royal themed in June.

To be honest as a kid Aus Day never even registered because it fell in the school holidays, it wasnt an extra day off.

Not sure why anyone would want to buy flag themed plastic landfill, flag waiving is very American, we do not even compete is red/white/blue on the international stage.

Very sad that some coughs get riled up by political nonsense and cause property damage.

A couple of doors down from me (outskirts of a seaside town) is a block where shackies have 3 old caravans permanently parked, a BBQ area, shed with toilet etc, battered old flagpole. Used to be the domain of parents but now the late teen/early 20s kids and their friends arrive for a week or so and live it up. Make a lot of noise some warm evenings.

Pleasantly surprised to see a crisp, new Australian flag put up yesterday on the flagpole.

you needed to check out the UK during the last 3 years. Flags everywhere. I think maybe its just not an Australian thing because most countries celebrate important events with flags and USA is a late comer. Athletes always mention the raising of the flag when they win an event so it's clearly a deep sentiment we don't normally display publically.

WCMO. - I miss the red white and blue of sporting teams and hate the yellow and green. Not my choice of scheme.

Not rationalising the vandalism. People these days are mindless. But it's not really about the tacky goods but the message, isn't it. it takes away consumer choice. Effectively censoring it. What's next?

They are still selling everything on my shopping list I have ever bought for Jan 26.
- lamb chops
- sausages
- onions
- eggs
- ketchup
- tomatoes
- lamingtons

Ketchup? Whaaat? I've moved on to the local butcher and Fruit and veg. And yes, they sell tomato sauce 😂. And Foodland. Even though I have to drive further for them.

My observation is that this is multifactorial
My local Coles had large pro V—ce signage up for months…but still sells Australia day stuff (no interest to me) and presumably same lead times.
Like most things - life’s complexity is shades of grey (>50) but social media only allows black and white (not nuance). This then gets regurgitated via various echo-chambers so one set of events fits the narrative of the regurgitator/audience with politicians/populists on the guidelines cherrypicking accordingly.
Personally, I love to see migrants who have sometimes fled appalling circumstances thrilled on receiving their citizenship speak of the freedoms and love of being able to live in such a wonderful country. Maybe they find all the background chatter amusing or it barely registers.
So I support any respectful acknowledgement of who we are with zero tolerance for violence.
Very apt. Society has gone from shades of grey to black and white. You are either 'for or against '. No shade of grey. I reckon it's because of the books and the movie. 🤭

In Perth it is (was??) a big thing, people head down to the foreshore and spend the day there. BBQ, beers, cricket/kick the footy etc. and then fireworks in the evening.

Perhaps everyone who objects to Australia Day or wants to change the date should protest by insisting on going to work !
I'm guessing this was said as a joke, but there are quite a few employers that are allowing flexibility around public holidays. Particularly in organisations that require an 'always on' presence.

So if the employer and employees agree, they can commute Christmas for Chinese New Year, Eid or Diwali, for example. This helps the employer with scheduling. It helps the employee who would otherwise have to take annual leave at a time they want off, whilst at the same time being forced to take leave at a time that doesn't mean anything to them.

I know a couple of people who work on the 26th of Jan and commute their public holiday to somewhere in NAIDOC Week. They don't make a big deal of it. They are happy with it, their employer is happy with it.

When I had a role that was customer facing with clients in different states (plus NZ) I would swap Public Holidays all the time to better suit me. Most commonly i would work both the Bank Holiday (an extra day if you work for a bank or insurance or other financial services) in August and Labor Day (first Monday in Oct) to cover customers in other industries or states where no PH that day like Vic and then take day off the day following City2Surf (1 week after bank holiday) to recover and my Birthday.

But I don't see it is removing any more consumer choice than any decision of what to stock and what to leave out of inventory. There are plenty of other places to buy the tat if people want them.

It seems to me that the people who are screaming the loudest about being unAustralian don't buy the stuff anyway. Can you imagine the person who called for the boycott of WW buying Australia Day items there? I can't.

You mean this guy?
Yeah, he’s probably got some staffer buying it for him. 😜

We are able to apply to work Australia Day if we choose. I don't work Friday so its pointless for me this year.

There is probably some support for renaming the 26/01 as National ME day in celebration of our new enlightened age.
Shame day is also a good alternative as an apt name for who we have become.
My first National Shame day nomination is to celebrate the fact that we can't send a navy ship anywhere (and are mothballing them)
because cannot recruit crew.

because cannot recruit crew.
But that issue is not specific to Defence. We also don't have the people to work in medical, police, teachers, hospitality, service, aged care - actually, pretty much everywhere. That CMO. Where has everyone gone!

I don't think I've ever bought anything Aussie related for Australia Day but do buy those clip on Koalas for overseas travel because people like them, even though shamefully they are made in China. That CMO. I just don't buy Woolies excuse this time.

WECMO. Wooiles have suddenly reduced the prices of so many items and finally meat esp lamb (likely Coles too) and the shelves are full of Red tags. Timing is totally suss.

This thread is for specific WCMO anecdotes.
There has been enough discussion related to January 26th and what it may or may not represent (although it appears to cheese some off).
Recent commentary has become borderline political/partisan and anything further on this may result in sanction.
