What I ate today - the food thread

My workplace doesn’t have any vego options for brekkie, except for teeny-tiny-triangles of hashbrown.

The brekkie options are egg and bacon muffin (with/no cheese), brekkie role (with/no cheese), croissant with bacon (with/no cheese) and hashbrown …

Today I was late for work and couldn’t have brekkie at home. So thought I’d just have couple of hashbrowns… I rock up to the counter and guess what, they ran out of hashbrowns today!?!?!? 🫣

Looking at my disappointed face, the person behind the counter asked what the matter was. I asked if they any hashbrowns left or anything vego … the answer was no ..

He later went inside to check with the chef if they can make something vego, quickly. The chef luckily had some hashbrowns left from the morning batch. He then put it inside a croissant, topped with cheese and made me a brekkie!! And it was amazing 🤩

Crunchy and buttery on the outside, cheesy in the inside ! Gooey wonder 🤩

Focus on drinks (which looked superb) given location and setup, so wasn't expecting much for our light lunch. But was very happily surprised with exceptional dishes, full of flavour and spice, at modest price.

Sample of dishes from Mode Kitchen & Bar in Sydney. Good service and high quality, but way overpriced. That said, I enjoyed two of the best starters I've been lucky to have:
IMG_3831.jpg
Tassie octopus with chick peas and sambal, sea succulents and chorizo. Tender and tasty. Outstanding.

And wagyu tartare with caviar. Fantastic.

Sake Double Bay for lunch today. Started with edamame which really were nice. DEFA7006-453E-4EB0-8E9E-BB2EDE3CB8C6.jpeg

Mrsdrron washed hers down with a gloss of Henschke’s Pinot Grigio. I had a sake Explorer’s flight.

My preference went from the bottom up.
Next some exceptional oysters.

Then salmon sashimi which really does melt in your mouth.

Then a disappointing soft shell crab roll.

But then perhaps the best dish of roasted scallops.

The final 2 dishes were king brown mushroom skewers and eggplant and miso. Were good but not outstanding.

Service was pleasant but slow. A bit expensive for what it is.

A new restaurant on the Sunshine Coast tonight. Good Greek food. The Tziki bar in Forest Glen.
We first shared a platter of entrees between the 4 of us. Calamari, octopus, lamb ribs, roasted cauliflower salad and babaganoush. I was a little slow with my pictures.

And last night was the Maroochydore Surf Club for a pseudo medical meeting. Was the typical alternate drop. For main steak or chicken. For dessert a very dry sticky date pudding or a tart.

Naturally I would have preferred the steak and tart but got the alternates.

Been to a couple of lunches lately:

There was no menu for this lunch - it was chicken breast on a bed of mash with a tasty jus 😋 - nothing left on my plate!

Canberra pho. 222 City Walk, Canberra ACT 2601

Wanted to try this place for a long time. So went in today for lunch. Ordered their vegan dish - tofu and lemongrass spicy (hot) curry with rice.

The dish itself tasted very good. But not spicy enough - did not qualify as “hot”. So asked for a generous serve of chillies on the side.

Will definitely go back.
