What's your Uber experience?

Not Uber but Ola.
There doesn't seem to be a way to tip more than $2.50. The driver that picked us up the other day was certainly 10/10 and I wanted to tip $5.00
We were going to cross the road when he arrived but he insisted on doing a u turn.
On arrival at our destination (a club) we were happy to be dropped at the kerb but he insisted that he drive through the car park and drop us right at the door because it was very hot (in ADL). The car park was a bit of a nightmare being NYE but our driver was very patient, probably adding 5 or so minutes to the job.
If only all ride share drivers were this good.
Well, I drive these gigs, and I wish, I had more 'reasonable' passengers.
Some of the issues:
Riders using a GPS feature, to make the booking.
Device places passenger at x, by driver's GPS directs to y ( which can be up to 500 m away ).
Lesson 1 ... Never use GPS, always manually enter street with number.
Point No. 2, is in general, there are more psychopaths living freely in the community, than there are locked up in either jail or Psych. Units.
Doing ride share, I have run into many of them, who are way over-entitled and misguided.
Hallmark of the psychopath ... a total lack of empathy for others.
Hallmark of most ride share passengers ....
Guess ?

I have a few 1s as well.

The biggest problem I have these days is drivers accepting then cancelling a few minutes later. Not sure why they do, but it's driving me away from rideshares

Sounds reasonable, but in many cases where there is large buildings and you’re in the city there’s no street number to hand. No worries if you’ve been picked up from the house.

Personally in a city or similar environment, I use pick up notes to accurately describe exactly where I am and the colour of clothing or bag that might be useful.

In city you dont need the number just the name of the building or business and app wil find it. I often find it useful to wait at a hotel, because they usually have a driveway where the driver can pull in without fear of a ticket, and if you type Hilton Hotel George St, Uber will find it.

I have 12 *1s but still have a rating of 4.91, because almost all the rest are 5s (*480). It notes that it only calaculates on the last 500 rides and Ive probably done at least 3 times that many.

I dont think I have done anything to ever to truely deserve a 1. I am always polite, I wait in an area where drivers can pull up safely without fear of a ticket, only do decent trips $20+ and am always at the pick point before they arrive so never have to wait. Ive never been drunk, I keep chat light (when I engage), never take or make phones calls and always say thank you.

If you rate a driver anything less than a 5 you have to provide a reason, shame the ratings dont show you what reason the driver selected for giving you a 1. I reckon probably not tipping.

However, not wortth worrying about because some people just wont like the way you look, or the direction the ride was going.

Sydney Hilton ...
Pax uses GPS to make booking.
Driver's app will always say to go to Pitt Street, as you can only exit into George Street ( minor issue, I suppose ).
Why do Drivers cancel ?
Depends on which platform.
I don't drive for Uber. They are the worst for drivers.
DiDi and Ola have punitive penalties for drivers who cancel. Loss of reward bonus points.
The only real reason to cancel, is if pax can't be found ( back to GPS issue ).
Rule No. 1 of ride share ..... ANSWER THE BLOODY PHONE !!
Too many pax are talking to someone else, when their driver is trying to call them.
And don't wait up on the 20th. floor until the driver rings, and then say, "I'll just be a few minutes. Coming down in lift now" .... while driver is waiting in No Stopping zone.
THAT will see your trip cancelled too.

Have a mate that is a Uber driver and his rule is $5 minimum tip or you get a low rating
I always tip at least $5 as long as the service is ok. I’ve got about a dozen 3 stars but nothing lower and couple hundred 5 stars.

Interesting tip from OMaaT, if you didn't know it already

How To Check Your Detailed Uber Rating

I got 119 x 5 star, 2 x 4 star and 1 .... 1 star  Wonder when that was?
Did you share an Uber with @JohnM at some point in time? ;)

At what point do drivers rate the rider? Where I'm going with this is how does the driver know what tip the rider gave if they rate them right after the ride?

Drivers are forced to rate passengers, or you can't close off the completed trip.
Paxs don't need to rate drivers, but the ride share using psychopath community will always rate, and often just 1 or 2*.
With experience, you can tell who the 2* pax was, because the real psychopath will want to elaborate on their 'terrible and traumatising' ride. They need to be extremely precise, whereas the common 'normal' idiot will give 1* out of the frustration, that they consider themselves more important than the driver, and retaliate to advice given, by doing the 1* thing ( Eg. explaining the GPS error, and stating that driver had called you 5 times. Please don't be on the phone, when expecting the driver to arrive ... )

Tips (on DiDi and Ola ) come through about 10 - 20 mins after completion of the trip.

I give everyone 5* unless a real issue. Not related to 'tipping'.

Stupidity starts at 4*
Time waisting with Stupidity 3*
I generally don't bother with 2*
For 1*, you will have either chucked up in my car; be verbally abusive bordering aggressive, or .....
Slammed the door excessively
( really hard ).

@jase05 How does this work then according to your driver mate? The driver has rated the passenger well before they know what the tip is.

I will ask him next time I catch up.
The way he made it sound was that it was similar to the way way we rate the drivers ie I the rating doesn’t have to be done straight away.

Sounds like an 'inbred' Uber thing ...
Most drivers on the other platforms only rate pax on the pax behaviour... before pick up ( excessive waiting or wrong location by GPS booking ), and during the trip .... ( abusive / aggressive / soiling the vehicle ).

A 'tip' is not expected, thus the app requires the driver to rate first, before any tip 'may' be posted.

Yeah, I’ll have to ask. I just remember him talking about it one night when we were out. Could have been talking rubbish for all I know though

Why does your Uber suddenly cancel? Drivers have discovered a software vulnerability where they can see the destination BEFORE they pick you up. coughpy destination or short trip? You're gone!

Why does your Uber suddenly cancel?
I think for higher tier drivers sort of like frequent driver status with low cancellation and high * will get visibility of how long their trip is and in which direction.

So if they see a trip duration they don't like or the trip takes the driver in a direction he does not want to go they will cancel. But there are only so many cancellations they can do before they drop a Tier (I think).

Interesting, a recent "enhancement" maybe...in the last several months I've been getting about a 50% cancellation rate ex bne airport, previously none (not a big issue so far, just means an extra 5min)
