Why masks in airports?

Since Tasmania opened its border 6 months ago I have met hundreds of patients who have had Covid. I haven't looked after any of them in hospital and none have died. Vaccines have definitely saved lives.
But I have also met dozens of patients who get mysterious chest pain, palpitations, lethargy and breathlessness, sometimes weeks or months after the initial infection. Many are patients I have known for years, not the type who are hypochondriacs or malingerers. Covid is not to be taken lightly and if masks can prevent even 10% of infections that is a very small price to pay.

Where’s that 10% come from? It’s a moot point anyway. It’s going to impact every single person at some point (if it hasn’t already), and if anything it’s better to do it as close to vaccination as possible.

There are still people who don’t like to wear seatbelts. But saying that the road toll is right down doesn’t mean we can stop wearing seat belts.
Wearing a seat belt isn't inconvenient and doesn't affect your health.

Wearing a mask is inconvenient and can affect your health.

Repeat a lie often enough and people will accept it as truth.
Presumably you would be happy for surgeons to operate ungloved and unmasked...

That statement works two ways.

There’s a huge difference between surgical masks being used in a controlled surgical setting and the same single use masks being used by people walking up and down the stairs at central station.

There are people that don’t like wearing seatbelts, find them uncomfortable and don’t like being told what to do. But it’s a good example you raise… *you* don’t find wearing a seatbelt uncomfortable, I feel the same way about masks. Don’t find them uncomfortable.

You’ve said this several times now. How is using public transport not a choice? Of course it is. No one is forced to use a bus or go to the airport to catch a plane.

There are many people who can’t drive, or don’t have the means to own a car or take taxis everywhere. People that need to get to work, go to school, or to medical appointments. The same with some people on planes. While many might be going on holidays… and arguably that is a choice… there are others that need to travel for essential reasons, such as medical or to visit sick relatives.

So wear one. Stop pushing your hysteria onto others.

Didn’t we decide for two years that people shouldn’t be traveling interstate? Let alone overseas! There’s no “arguably” about going on holidays being a choice. And we decided that air travel was totally not required, so your arguement is beyond weak.

No one is being compelled to wear masks outside of health care settings, it seems. I choose to continue wearing a mask indoors in public. So do the majority of doctors I work with. Some have been infected, but I can't think of any who didn't catch it from their children. I haven't met anyone who caught it at work. Almost all of the medical staff feel that given the prevalence in the community, being masked at work is safer than being unmasked in a supermarket.
Maybe doctors are just idiots...

Isn’t this the topic of the thread? People are compelled to wear masks on aircraft.

You're free to wear a mask - just don't push that cough on the rest of us.

What a stupid analogy.

And this is what it ultimately comes down to. If wearing the useless thing makes people feel better then go nuts. I couldn’t care less what someone wears on their face. But don’t push it on me. I’ve had my three vaccinations, I’ve “recovered”, what am I protecting myself or others from?

There are idiots everywhere - even in the medical profession. Given the total cough-show the last two years has been I think health professionals are rather well represented..

Health professionals are excellent at their generally very specific speciality. In my time back in public health in 2021 the dumbest statements I heard came from doctors. Often the smartest of us lack the most common sense. Generally isn’t an issue, except for when politicians decide to blindly follow “health advise” with zero regard for anything else. Generally the nurses seem the most switched on. They’ve got a bit of life experience outside of the BMW dealership.

Not one of those things require compulsory public transportation. Every single one has an alternate option, be it travelling by foot, organising a relative or friend to drive you, carrying out your meetings or medical appointments virtually etc etc. So sorry, but using public transport absolutely is a choice.

As for a holiday “arguable” being a choice. I mean please! I didn’t realise this was the amateur comedy thread. 😂

I guess someone held a gun to their head and forced them off to the US!

It’s actually the person that has covid who provides the most benefit - to others - in wearing a mask.

Me wearing a mask offers limited protection from someone else. More benefit is gained if the infected person wears it.

You need to adjust to that simply not happening. As has been the case for as long as both you and I are alive.
