Wind Generation and the Electricity Grid

South Australians expected to have the cheapest power prices in 6 months.

South Australians will have the cheapest power prices in the country in as little as six months, energy experts say.

The state already has some of the lowest wholesale power prices as a result of increased gas generation.

But those cheaper prices are not yet being reflected in household bills where rates are set periodically.

SA should expect cheapest power prices

Is Australia a nation of drongos being herded by a cabal of coal knobs when it comes to polluting the world? Discuss.

"Australia's greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, making the task of future pollution cuts to meet international commitments more difficult, the latest data for the government show.

On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, emissions rose 1.6 per cent in the March quarter, the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory shows. The Environment Department confirmed the quarterly increase was the biggest in nine years."

Australia's carbon pollution soars, government data shows

"Under the Coalition governments since 2013 emissions had risen 6 per cent compared with a 10 per cent drop in the pollution during the 2007-2013 Labor governments"

Yeah - that's what happens when you remove the cost of polluting the environment. But the Coalition doesn't apparently believe in using market forces anymore, instead they promote the Cult of Coal to the easily misled.

Much more potential as a new thread…

Not sure about the continuing judgmental language , but as a nation we clearly have an integrity problem when our fiscal viability is underwritten by coal exports ; and paying lip service to this anthropogenic planet wrecking by force feeding placebo's like wind farms.

Fair call. Australia both produces and exports more than its fair share of CO2 in the form of coal. Australia exports uranium yet rejects it as a power source and turns it back on the by-products.

Very short term view all around ....

Unfortunately, the increase in emissions is technically all down to Labor - as they approved the Qld LNG plants which account for all the increased emissions (increased demand for coal-fired power).

AND as the QLD LNG plants suck up all available East Coast gas to fill their export contracts as the cost of new gas is more than the cost of already known & producing gas fields - the price for gas domestically has been pushed way above the world price leading to less gas-fired production and more coal-fired.

Double dipping indeed.

So, technically it is due to Labor BUT as the various companies & lobbyists donate to both sides it makes no difference. Whoever is in power does what the common donors tell them to do.

It's the Vibe, RAM. Fine - and some unintended consequences.

Back a decade ago there was consensus about climate change and an acknowledgement that the best way to address this was to set a price on pollution and let the market work out the problem. Seemed to be working well. Then the lobbyists and other sycophants for vested interests jumped in with their usual camouflage for greed, and we quickly degenerated into the most disappointing shambles. Oi Oi Oi.

Snouts-in-the-trough know no restraint.

There are people on all sides of this mess that are only in it for how much they can gain and they don't care who or what suffers as a result.

Honesty and integrity are just used for crosswords as far as they are concerned!

Once upon a time aeons ago I managed a scrub pulling operation ( among lots of other stuff).
It was seriously sad to see the havoc we were wreaking on pristine bush.. the bears did not stand a chance.. very sad

Average electricity prices in South Australia fell below those in coal-rich Victoria and NSW in the first four months of the financial year, and have been the lowest of any mainland eastern state in the past two months.

The surprise reversal of the historical premium paid by South Australian energy users suggests steps taken by the Australian Energy Market Operator and the Weatherill government to ease the state's energy reliability problems are working, energy export Ross Garnaut says.

The Turnbull government blamed South Australia's high electricity prices in the first half of the year on its heavy reliance on renewable energy - the state gets half its supply from wind and solar power and has had no coal generation since May 2016.”

And the reason it states SA power prices are now lower-more gas generation.

And the point is that the blackouts were manipulative to game the system, not due to renewables as AMEA report stated and not as LNP frothing said.

That is so wrong on so many points for such a short post.

True (for once), drron. The overarching reason for these blackouts was the gullible to the point of moronicity (*TM) assumption that privatising energy assets would result in a better system of generation and distribution and retailing.

What a joke!

The 'reliable coal-fired baseload' myth has well and truly been busted.

MYTH BUSTED that is!

First in late October one coal-fired generation plant broke down and is still out-of-service in Victoria nearly a month later.

Then a second Victorian 'reliable coal-fired baseload' generator broke - unit one of Victoria’s Yallourn coal-fired power plant tripped on Saturday afternoon.

2017 11 21 2 Coal fired units fail and reliable baseload myth busted.jpg
Now the remaining generators are creaming tens of millions in super-profits due to this. This includes the owners of the two coal-fired generators that have broken as they own other power generation plants.

Notice that Qld (under orders from the State Govt) is not rorting the system and is producing the maximum possible to help offset these coal-fired failures down south. The red in the inter-connector box shows that the limit in MW transmission has been reached.

Now this is where it gets VERY interesting (are you listening ACCC?) as for some reason the Snowy Mountains operators are not doing ANYTHING to increase supply. Meanwhile the other generators they own are maximising their profits. In fact if the Snowy did add some production it would lose millions of these SUPER-profits it is currently raking in.

Neither are the gas plants in SA generating anywhere near their capacity.

Just listen to those senior executives' bonus payments piling up!
