Can someone recommended me a good whipper snipper for no more than $300? I'm looking for ease of use and ease of replacing/refilling the line.

Thanks!
Based on my experience, spend the $300 on paying someone else to use their whipper snipper on your lawn. At $50 a time, you get six "uses" and that is about as many I have ever managed before the line replace/refill procedure no longer fits into the easy category, at which time it is generally tome to buy a new one .

Well the new grandson has been named william. So between him and junior simongr we have the Princes covered with australia's own William and Harry.

FWIW, the most recent Choice test (from August 2006) tested a number of them including petrol powered and battery (mine still needs to be plugged in ).

All the petrol powered ones performed the trimming functions better than the less powerful battery operated ones.

The top performer in each category was:

BrandPricePetrolSTIHL FS 38$249CordlessBLACK & DECKER Firestorm NST 2018-XE$169
  • The STIHL is a good head in front of the other petrol models for trimming performance, but all of them scored higher than the battery-powered models.
  • The cordless BLACK & DECKER rated best overall for ease of use, though it didn’t trim edges or cut long grass as well as the petrol models. It would be suitable instead of a lawnmower for small yards, provided you don’t let the grass get overgrown
Both scored well in 'ease of use' - which included respooling. Prices are, of course, from 2006.

Good luck!

PS. Sorry about the formatting.

Another random "don't-want-to-start-a-new-topic-because-bumping-the-off-topic-thread-is-a-lot-more-fun-and-'productive'" question.

As most people here know, I've got a SC run coming up in late May (doing AKL-SYD-SIN-SYD-AKL in J). The flight that starts it all is QF142 AKL-SYD departing on Sat 30 May at 0850h.

Now I've gaffed up a bit because after Oz Fest in CNS, I'm doing a bit of a domestic SC run before heading over. I was going to book both ADL-MEL then QF133 MEL-AKL the day before my AKL-SYD flight, but I stuffed up the dates and I booked ADL-MEL on 28 May rather than 29 May.

The main reason I wanted to book a "connection" on the same day as MEL-AKL was to take advantage of the through-check-in from ADL so I don't have to check-in again at MEL, thus meaning I simply waltz straight through T2 passport control and get lots of time in the MEL FL before MEL-AKL. What I hadn't thought about, however, was if there was any time limits for earliest check-in time at MEL. (I know for JQ check-in doesn't open until 3 hrs before departure.)

Since it's probably too expensive all-considered to change my ADL-MEL flight...
  • If there are no limits to when you can earliest check-in for a QF (metal & marketed) flight, then I'll overnight in MEL on Thu 28 May before taking QF133 the next day (Fri 29 May).
  • If there are time limits for earliest check-in, then I'll take QF133 on Thu 28 May and overnight in AKL instead.

So, the list of questions:
  • When is the earliest you can check-in before departure of a QF metal & marketed flight at MEL T2? (If it makes any difference, I'll be using the F check-in.)
  • If I decide to fly ADL-MEL and QF133 MEL-AKL in the same day, does my plan of through-check-in in order to get more FL time work? (Or is there something I have neglected to consider?)
  • If I overnight in MEL on 28 May, anyone want to get together for dinner/drinks etc.? (Anyone willing to let me crash for the night? :))
  • If I fly QF133 the day before I leave on AKL-SYD (which leaves a mere 8 hours between landing in AKL and leaving it), I assume I will need to clear immigration/customs and claim baggage? (Unlikely that I can get through-check-in for ADL-MEL-AKL-SYD-SIN, even though all flights are within 24 hours of each other). Any idea what to write on the address and reason on the NZ incoming passenger card? :)
  • I'm a bit out of touch with Y prices for TT flights. I see $196 for MEL-AKL on QF at the moment. How does that fare (pun intended) for pricing? It seems cheaper than some of the gazetted specials in Red e-mail, but the last one I received with TT specials didn't have MEL-AKL advertised. I can seem to get AU$196 for MEL-AKL (although I'm not factoring in the c/c charge... :() and NZ$266 for AKL-BNE. Reasonable, normal, use points or wait for sales?
  • Who here thinks I'm crazy? :D Be honest!

If you are there for less than 8 hours you can just have transit.

The other stuff I don't know about.

For someone who set out to reach Gold status and ended up reaching Platinum and then fly's PER-SYD-MEL-BNE just to access the F lounge with a few friends is not crazy.

I'm on QF133 29th May ...

The MEL First Check-in closes around 6:30pm, reopening ~8:30pm for QF29. If you are flying and it's open and you are eligible to use it, you can check-in.

The $196 is the standard inclusive MEL-AKL fare these days, it was somewhat more before the Fuel Fines were cut this week.

So I take that to mean as long as the F check-in is open, I can check in how ever early I like for QF133; e.g. if it's open 8am in the morning, I can check-in for QF133 at 8am, clear passport control and have almost a full day at the FL. Sounds nice to me :) So looks like the plan might be a day in MEL before heading across the Tasman...

Thanks serfty - that's good to keep in mind. I wonder if they will have any sales going to NZ any time soon (although the profit margins are already razor thin on TT!). On top of that, thank goodness the c/c fee is only $7.70 for TT.

anat0l - that's alot of flights I see on your BA07 - so can I consider you as crazy! ;) (only jokes mate, I'm sure you're well on your way to many years as a Platinum FF)

Did anyone else feel that Earthquake in Melb tonight? All the picture frames on the wall fell off and even the car alarm went off.

Measured 4.6 apparently:eek:

Yep, the earth moved for me too! ;) Initially thought it was a large truck outside but there was no accompanying noise . Wandered out, all looked ok, then thought tremor, rang the folks who live a few km away, and they felt it too.

Just house/chair wobbling a bit for a few seconds, no great impact.

Epicentre near Korumburra apparently.

Crazy... I've heard that in Japan this is quite a regular occurrence, it would have been cool, "in a way" if it did happen when I was there!

At last!Something exciting happening in Melbourne!:p;)

Bush fire, Hurricane winds, earth tremors, heat waves over 40c - I would say Melbourne/Victoria has been a little over excited in the last month!! But still happy to call it home :)
