Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Re: HECS debt I don't care if they privatize it or not but a contract is a contract. I signed up for a HECS deal that I've mostly paid off but it was one with two ends of the bargain. No government should be able to unilaterally and retrospectively change the terms. To then sell that off to a private a company just adds insult to injury - *IF* it is true.

I would like to think that no one can mulch on their HECS debt by leaving the country or going bankrupt. On death the estate should pay the debt as a priority claim.

A couple more paying back wedding travel expenses. I suspect the PM can't pay back his sporting trips because of his double mortgage he took out to fund his daughters private school education.

"It's probably an oversight, but it's a very big oversight to forget about a $700,000 mortgage," he said.
"It does suggest that Mr Abbott wants to lead Australia and run a trillion-dollar economy but there are some questions about his capacity to do so."
Labor pounces on Abbott mortgage change - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

is no stranger to a thumping home loan and a bit of financial pressure. When he lost his job as a Howard government minister after the 2007 election defeat, losing about $90,000 in salary, he took a new $710,000 mortgage on his house in Forestville to cover his costs of living and the private school fees for two of his three daughters.
My financial advisers have always insisted borrowing large sums to finance day-to-day expenditure is very unwise – it runs down your capital. They’re adamant living costs should always be financed from current income, like salary, dividends and interest.
So there seems to an inconsistency here. The Opposition Leader’s claims to the throne rest to a large extent on promoting his strong sense of fiscal responsibility. Yet he hasn’t borrowed such a large sum in order to buy an asset like a home, but rather to finance day-to-day living expenses. And if The Australian has got its facts right, Mr Abbott has borrowed so much relative to his straitened financial circumstances that he’s feeling “a bit of financial pressure”.

So Abbott has been on plus 300k for at least the last decade, took out a 700k loan but keeps billing the Australian taxpayer so he can swan around the country riding his bike.

Just like airline shares, I will not be directly investing in any financial product based on HECS debt.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

You could buy a bit of HECS debt to put into your superfund as an asset if the proposal gets legs.
It probably won't happen as the financial haircut would be too big to contemplate for the Government ( unless they modify all the terms of the lending ).

Anyone on that kind of coin who has trouble financing a good lifestyle should be laughed at when they talk about financial responsibility.

Great so now my taxes are paying for these users to visit their investment properties.

Oh and Abbott has borrowed to fund operating expenses. Seems the liberal party are exactly what they claim to oppose. I accept the apology of all the Abs lovers in this thread. Your love is misplaced.

No need to do either. Just don't ever earn enough to have to pay it back. Any degree qualified person who is predominately a housewife is probably in this category.

There has to be more to the story. I don't buy it on face value.

Dipping into "Equity mate!" to fund lifestyle expenses has become pretty scarily mundane over the last decade.

Abbott is to be congratulated for making the sacrifice of re-mortgaging his home to ensure his daughters can finish their education at a respectable private school instead of throwing them to the wolves in the union-run cesspit of the public education system.

And the point is ....?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Based on Abbott's claim that families will be $550 per annum better off.... well hallelujah because my last 12 month of electricity bills came out to a gross total of less than $500. Abbott promised 9% reductions but this $550/annum means I will be around 110% better off. Show me the $50 refund cheque!

My electricity bill last quarter was $1400.

Why so high?

Welcome to Adelaide, South Australia. Mainly heating as it drops significantly over summer.

If applicable, any use of grow lights or plant lights designed to stimulate plant growth in conjunction with indoor hydroponics will be a contributing factor to unusually high power consumption. :p

Pushka, you will get a huge huge reduction under Tony Abbott, Will you be looking forward to that?
