Bandt defends linking fires to PM - The West Australian

What is wrong with his logic? The recent IPCC report warns that one of the consequences of anthropomorphic climate change will be more extreme weather events. The bushfires in NSW is an example of such events that will become more common if we choose to ignore the science. Despicable T and his minions and sundry sycophants are effectively ignoring the science.

Drawing a link between DT and the current fires would be a very long bow indeed, and Bandt didn't do this because he is not stupid. What he did say was that these events would be more likely to occur in the future if we don't make strong inroads into winding back greenhouse gas emissions. What is illogical about that?

[Moral of the story - don't be fooled by headlines .... you have to actually read what people said.]

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Right now there are people wishing they could have bigger firebreaks around their homes.
Let's hope there are early arrests of the culprits and people evacuate when told to leave.
So much suffering from fires is caused by under clearing home sites in whole suburbs.

My electricity bill last quarter was $1400.

My bill hot out of the mailbox.. $550. for last quarter in QLD. :-|
I'm waiting for the NG solar panels to be released.

Solar is worth installing even without a high Gov FIT rebate.

Just make sure you run as much as you can during the day.

If you're on the high FIT - turn everything on at night:thumbup:

I've viewed the NG panels in China. Half the size of existing, more effective & better pricing options coming through.
Not to be too scrooge like.. though I've given some of my appliances a night sleep option enhancement.

The last two Qrts has me sitting on a CR$700+ :D with all power consumption included.

It's going to be great to see what Spring & Summer produce:thumbup:

Very appealing.. More travel funds to enjoy.. :D

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I'd expect electricity costs in QLD to be way less than in SA.

Maybe climate change means that people will in future be restricted from building in areas that are more prone than most to bushfire risk.

Totally agree.People do get mislead by headlines.Pity the recent IPCC report doesn't really agree with the headlines in the media with facts like-likely to be a small decrease in the number of cyclones to hit Australia. No hard evidence for increase in drought in Australia except for South West Australia and many factors not just greenhouse gas emissions for that.Less rain in South east Australia in winter but likely more in summer.
IPCC - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

There is
low confidence in projections of future changes in the Madden-Julian Oscillation due to poor skill in
models’ ability to simulate it and its sensitivity to ocean warming patterns. The implications for future
projections of regional climate extremes in West Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia are
therefore highly uncertain when associated with the Madden-Julian Oscillation. [14.3, 14.8.10, 14.8.11,
While projections under 21st century greenhouse warming indicate that it is
likely that the global frequency
of tropical cyclones will either decrease or remain essentially unchanged
And the fact that the firies were warning of the problems with fires with record grass growth due to earlier rain this year.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Pushka, you will get a huge huge reduction under Tony Abbott, Will you be looking forward to that?

Could get an even bigger reduction by turning off all the unnecessary appliances that must be running 24 hours a day.

We quite like cold food in the fridge. As I said, it is for heating and we dont have any heating appliances on after 10pm.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

new low for journalism. Well, not really a new low but you know what I mean. (not really journalism either, come to think of it...)

This whole Bandt incident is another example of the low depths the Australian political discourse has sunk to in the last few years from its usual high standards of being in the gutter.
All politicians/staffers/PR hacks are to blame, as well as journalists and media etc.
But I guess we get what we deserve.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

In Adelaide we hear we are at risk of bushfires because we have had a lot of rain and there is a lot of undergrowth. In NSW they are having bushfires because of the drought.

Maybe Australia has a lot of bushfires, just because we do.

There is usually a naturally bushfire or two on Kangaroo Island in mid summer but because it burns where no-one lives, then it is a non story. Something in that, perhaps.

Yeah, you guys are paying thru the nose.....20+% more than typical QLD rate.

Before I started enquiring about solar we were clocking up around $850/qtr. Soon worked out I was very blasé with power usage - knocked this back to $600/qtr by reducing pool pump/s hours. Since solar was hocked up (high FIT of $0.44c) we are now earning around $350/qtr including all power usage:cool:

We're lucky - don't have air-con of any description (not even fans) as our 60's house is built for local conditions. Hate to have a mac mansion with 4+ AC units!
