Don't worry Pushka.I think Moody is having another go at me.As usual totally ignorant of the facts.Doesn't worry me.

As to the CSIRO the Age article is absolute c***.The head of the CSIRO has said that 300 whose temporary contracts are up wont have them renewed-
Abbott denies responsibility for CSIRO job cuts | ZDNet

Of course if the Age article was an article in News Ltd papers critiscising an ALP leader we wouldn't be spared how biased News ltd is would we.

And to the CSIRO-it is not only government funded it also relies on external funding for about 25% of its funds-those have dropped significantly in the last year or two.A good article showing the effects of this-
Has the CSIRO lost its way?

The problems weren't any better under the previous government for the CSIRO.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

And once again, if something is legal, and even legislated for, IT CAN'T BE A RORT. Sheesh.
Yes, it can.

Indeed, it's the legal ones that are the worst rorts of all.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

So if it was never implemented what was the point of announcing it because it was obvious it was going to have massive ramifications for that industry and lead to job losses. But I suppose you think the greedy employers should have just continued to pay these employes even though the business income had fallen off a cliff because we all have a crystal ball and know what new governments will do. It doesn't work like that in the real world those job losses were a direct result of the labor policy announcement and the blame is theirs alone.

Taking the crystal ball logic a bit further why weren't all these research scientists that you reckon are going to lose their jobs looking around for jobs for the last few months as it was obvious that TA was going to "slash & burn".

Equating wealth-creating scientists with call centre workers because of naked partisianship.

No wonder this country is in so much trouble.

Well calling MMS workers call centre workers just means you know little about their business.
And by the way it wasn't the employer that panicked it was their clients and new orders virtually disappeared.

Besides I have already answered the concerns re the CSIRO.A typical Fairfax/ABC beat up.

Just to add you should see more of regional Australia.Every time I go to a regional centre you see more closed small businesses.

This country is fantastic. The past 6 years of rubbish will be washed away like bird poop on a deck:cool:
If you think the country is "fantastic", it's a struggle to see why you would consider the "past 6 years" "rubbish".

The two statements are at complete odds with each other.

What utter tripe.

I'm sure there were a handful of accountants and lawyers in there as well.

And by the way it wasn't the employer that panicked it was their clients and new orders virtually disappeared.
Just goes to show how much of a rort it was if customers dried up on that scale on the mere announcement of possible changes.

Besides I have already answered the concerns re the CSIRO.A typical Fairfax/ABC beat up.
My point was actually the absurdity of considering job losses in the tax rort business equivalent to job losses in the commercialisation of scientific research business.

Just to add you should see more of regional Australia.Every time I go to a regional centre you see more closed small businesses.
of course we do. We've spent 10 - nearly 15 - years gearing our economy towards selling dirt and swapping houses with each other to dodge income tax.

Don't worry though. A few more tax cuts for the rich and everything will be hunky-dory !

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

The only "benefit" I get is the ability to duck national service, which is never going to happen anyway. Otherwise I pay taxes like everyone else, and pump-prime the local economy with whatever is left. No ... hang-on .... that's my wife.

But if I was a new PR and couldn't vote I would be inclined to swear allegience to the Queen to get the colonial transportation papers that you all covet. If you are not an active part in the democratic process then you have no right to complain about it.

And Pushka - either you don't understand the TtR implications, or a lot of people are giving bad tax advice. Once you hit preservation age (55+) you get concessional tax treatment on any pension payments, and once you hit 60 it really becomes a very useful tax strategy. Reducing the limit on contributions from $50K to $25K has impacted the amount you can save in tax, but you will still make money for nothing.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

If is a rort if they do not agree with it.

No it's a rort if you pretend to do something, like pretending to live in one place but really live somewhere else, to get a financial advantage.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

So if it was never

No IF about it. It was never implemented.

As I said if the business couldn't last a few months they have bigger problems than a policy announcement. I predicted the election result at least 12 months ago.

The scientist were probably busy doing real things like applying for research grants and doing research. Being productive.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

For what its worth I agree that cutting back on CSIRO may not be good, not sure how many scientists will be going compared to admin staff (not everyone in CSIRO is a practising research scientist) but by saying that losing scientists contribute to the brain drain but losing qualified aircraft engineers will not is a little short sighted. After all - aircraft engineers can also move overseas or take their skills with them into other indistries. We need both aircraft engineers and scientists.

The Rudd government cut back on Geoscience Australia staff in 2007-2009 and then they were tremendously surprised that the Federal government had no expertise, advice nor any idea about how the resources industry worked, when it attempted to announce the first iteration of the RSPT and got into a big fight with the mining industry. So yes - lack of expertise advice can lead to stuff-ups and both sides of politics are pretty good at repeatedly doing that.

I'm certainly not saying engineers are not highly skilled and knowledgable people. However, lets get the process in some order. At a fundamental level Scientists discover things, Engineers make those things work. Aircraft engineers have a mobile job because they can go anywhere in the work and make things work that will make money immediately. They can also be attracted back to Australia, in general terms, by hiring them back. Scientists on the other hand are not so mobile, but they can travel widely, because they need to find someone to pay for them to discover things and investigate and not really make money immediately. As such once they move from Australia and find that alternative employment, it is going to be much harder to get them back.

Basically Australia should be creating knowledge not just digging up dirt. But then I hardly expect right wing nut bags to understand the concept of knowledge, or saving for the future.

Your assumption about admin staff is fundamentally flawed. Scientists and research staff are the ones that are employed on non-ongoing contracts. That's an obvious consequence of the project based nature of their work. I know plenty of researchers that only have work for 3 to 6 months at a time and are constantly doing their research grant applications. The researchers mostly do not have permanent employment, because once the project ends they are no longer needed for that project. Admin staff on the other hand are needed constantly, permanently. Your receptionist, secretary, HR and IT staff and etc. are permanent employees. So, yes, those 1400 non-ongoing contracts will be majority held by research staff not admin staff.

Ohh Spelling - That's a telling argument. OH you win.

Still I thought only brain dead half wits failed to understand that scientific advancement creates wealth?

Oh I understand about creating wealth believe me and I'm not one of the brain dead half wits that creates it for someone else that's the difference between being an employee and an employer.

Doubt it. More likely that you know how to create revenue or profit. Wealth is another matter entirely, that involves nation building and such like. Very hard to understand value when you're focused on cost.

To raise the average IQ perhaps? It's a thankless task but if I don't do it, who will?

But back on topic .... it seems that Despicable T's grovelling apology to Indonesia about his "robust politicking" (aka the pack of lies he sold to the less astute voters) has gained him precisely nothing. They should take away his passport and leave it to Julie "Death Stare" Bishop to mend the relationships he is trashing.

For any rightwing nut who thinks Science doesn't make money.

CSIRO wins $220m over latest wi-fi patent lawsuit | Business Spectator

The CSIRO has collected $220 million payout from several international technology firms after settling the second round of litigation in the US over its wireless internet patent.
This latest windfall comes after the CSIRO won $205 million when it settled with 10 major technology companies, including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Dell and Toshiba, in 2009.
According to The West Australian, the CSIRO signed a confidentiality agreement as part of the settlement that has stopped them revealing the rest of the companies involved in the lawsuit.

Time to start horse trading with these scoundrels.......starting with foreign aid.

The 1.4 Billion they got in 2005 and a half Billion a year since......hasn't been well spent.

They appear to be a bunch of ungrateful, fanatical, ugly minded people......

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

So the first 2 boats that Australia asked Indonesia to take the passengers back and they did so gets TA no publicity and from the media no coverage.
When one is a failed attempt just days after the spy allegations it is all TAs fault.Yeh I get in the eyes of some people here people TA is always wrong no matter what the facts.

I am amazed that people here think the relationship with Indonesia was great under Rudd/Gillard.Truth is they had smashed it with constant changes in policy re boat people then really stuffed it with the banning of the live cattle trade.TA is trying to restore that relationship.

You also think because the maestro K Rudd could speak Mandarin our relationship was all ticketty boo.His ratf****** comment was noted.
