Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Their leader has just announced it too. ;)

I'm certainly not the leader of the Abbott lovers around here. Just interesting when I open the thread and all I see is the posts from the gang of 5 that are blocked. And I see one of the gang of five is trying to pretend CSIRO didn't invent wifi.

Hopefully they go on the prove black is white and then get unfortunately confused by the next pedestrian crossing.

That's funny. I had to open your post too as it's blocked for me but I was curious. That's all I need to say. :)

Oh we haven't turned back the boats. Who knew that wouldn't work? Besides the previous government.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

They invented wifi. That is worth billions.

They wanted a billion. But there are complications.

Every single company that sells products with Wi-Fi in them we would like to have a licence with ... [but] there's a practical limit to that - one of them is that there are very small or niche companies that are not going to sell very many units," Poole said. "There is another limit which is we only hold patents in 19 countries and so there are many countries where we don't hold patents including Russia and China.

Plus the US companies have been fighting back to minimise payments. Plus some are calling the CSIRO patent trolls.

It’s not the first time that the CSIRO has been criticised over the issue. Many global technology companies have fought the company’s claims on the Wi-Fi issue — with most ultimately losing, and an extensive article published in The Economist (no longer available online — it has been taken down over the past several years) has documented the fact that the history of Wi-Fi is far from simple, and that a common sense definition of where the Wi-Fi standard came from runs counter to the CSIRO’s position on the matter.
However, Mullin’s article has highlighted a key difference between Australian and US views on the issue.
A large number of Australians have strongly criticised the article online over the past week, defending the CSIRO and its patent litigation.
“Wow. **** Ars,” wrote one Reddit commenter. “Both articles border on racism as far as I’m concerned. To paint the CSIRO as patent trolls is ****ing laughable. The first $205 million netted through the patent lawsuits was donated to the Science and Industry Endowment Fund. The author has not substantiated his claims that the patents were insufficient or not related to any of the 802.11 standards. The reality is that the CSIRO was encouraged to monetise their inventions. Yeah, US government research organisations have given away their stuff for free. Good for them. That doesn’t mean the CSIRO are patent trolls when they monetise their inventions.”

Hopefully they go on the prove black is white and then get killed on the next pedestrian crossing.

 Someone needs to remember this is a playground thread! What a strange thing to post:confused:

Interesting. I don't find that strange. I find it extremely disturbing that someone here could wish such ill will on someone else (me) who posts here. Way too personal. How is that acceptable to any reasonable person?

Yes. On reflection - disturbing is the correct description!

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I really don't understand how anyone can get worked up about either of the main parties. A lesser of two evils in my mind with monkeys on the fringe.
At the end of the day, the two main parties are there for only the unions and big business which just looks like a zero sum game to me. As a business owner, I go with the lesser of the two evils, hoping for some crumbs to fall to the only sector growing employment in Australia.

What is REALLY disturbing is that you and Pushka have no idea of the reference Medhead was alluding to. The correct response would to be to call him a smeghead, then we could all have a chuckle and go for a beer.

Instead you huff and puff and produce TFOFA (and do it in such a humourless way).

Arguments on this forum are no fun ....

It's actually Douglas Adams not Red Dwarf but point about humour bypass is well taken :)

Yes - but both are part of the cultural vernacular and the cross reference would have been cool. Instead imaroo and poshka are so unhip it's a wonder their bums don't fall off.

(Someone stop me!)

PM Pushka and see if she appreciates the humour.....why would you want to lower yourself to this level?

Perhaps you need to re read the post again because while you consider it refers to a programme which I've already said on this forum I have no interest in, that is not the way the post was worded.

It's also pretty insular to suggest that because others don't know a particular tv programme that somehow in life they are somehow failing.

Sorry. Don't know the acronym.

Perfectly fine to debate the topic. Goes against the spirit of these boards to attack the poster.

One of the worst things I've ever seen posted on this forum.

FYI calling people the peanut "galley" and talking of wifi being "event"ed by the CSIRO tends to make you look like the clown.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Discussion on this topic has generally been allowed to wander on and on and go around in many circles however it now appears that some people here can no longer control themselves .

No one expects or is asking that everyone agree with each other but there is an expectation that people could/should remain civil and adhere to the basic forum rules. Unfortunately some have now crossed that magic line in the sand.

There are several options at this point.

  1. The thread could be closed,
  2. Posts could be removed,
  3. Individuals could be banned from the thread,
  4. Individuals could be given, warnings, infractions or even short or long term holidays from AFF.

At this point I am going to do non of the above however I am going to ask those who have crossed the line to the dark side to review and edit their posts. Remember there is a twenty four hour window from posting to do so. IF people do not take the opportunity then action will be taken.

I agree. The whole thing is a great laugh.....it's amusing to see how some can't handle new management.

I'm sure if Pushka googles the quote the context will become clear. However, I agree that an apology for the misunderstanding would be useful. I sure it wasn't intended as a threat but I can see how it might be read as one.

Hmm, interesting Freudian omission there.
