Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

For any rightwing nut who thinks Science doesn't make money.

CSIRO wins $220m over latest wi-fi patent lawsuit | Business Spectator

A couple of things. If CSIRO are purported to have invented WiFi then that amount is a piddling settlement given its usage now. I'd also like to know the cost of that development. It isn't just revenue that's important in a business but the cost to produce that revenue. And I'd also like to know the cost of projects that never come to anything. Then we would be in a true position to determine whether the csiro is a true profit centre as seems to be the arguments raised here, or whether we agree that its an organisation a government must support to some degree, in a similar fashion as it supports Arts and the like.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Let's hope they rip into the budget for elite sports funding......waste of money IMO.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

So if it was never implemented what was the point of announcing it because it was obvious it was going to have massive ramifications for that industry and lead to job losses.

They announced it because all new arrangements commencing after that day (or soon thereafter - cannot recall exactly) would be subject to the new rules if the legislation passed.

You could forgive the ALP for thinking they might have a chance to win the election at that time because it was during Rudd's honeymoon period where the polls were much tighter than they were prior to his taking over from Gillard.

I wonder what they will do there. I don't mind the funding so much, but it is the attitude of some of the athletes it produces that is galling. I think there should be some kind of hecs fee they need to reimburse if they become successful as a result of their training they receive there. We expect teachers and nurses to pay their debt back but not the athletes. Its a flawed model.

Thats a good idea....I'd support that.

I assume this is a send-up?!?

My company spends approximately 25% of its revenue on R&D. This equates to many hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Without it we may as well give the business away and do something less productive like digging holes in the ground.

No climate science body, no Science Minister, no scientists ...... looks like its back to the caves for you lot. Just make sure you drag the women by the hair when you go, 'coz if you drag them by the feet they fill up with sand!

This country is fantastic. The past 6 years of rubbish will be washed away like bird poop on a deck:cool:

Please save that bird poop!
I want to use that bird poop in the $180 bird poop facials I can get in New York spas.
If I bring my own bird poop maybe I can get a lower price facial.
Never put anything to waste.

So the first 2 boats that Australia asked Indonesia to take the passengers back and they did so gets TA no publicity and from the media no coverage.
When one is a failed attempt just days after the spy allegations it is all TAs fault..

Maybe Tony needs to review his media policy. If you don't " feed the chooks" they will not report the news you want whether it is good or bad.
No good blaming the media if you don't tell them anything. They will just report or not report whatever they want. They have a tendency to report bad news.

Well then I guess you would be dissappointed with the previous governments arbritrary exclusion of large companies and fiddling with R&D tax breaks, just don't tell drsmithy about your company it as may result in a a big argument about what constitutes a rort, or not, and heaven knows that has been done to death here.

No climate science body, no Science Minister, no scientists ......

Unlike the previous government whom hired a chief scientist and met with her once (Rudd Mk1) and never (Gillard) and in 2010 after a ministerial reshuffle ommitted the title due to an accidental oversight. There is no minister for science as it was rolled into the portfolio of industry - seems a reasonably logical place for it to be if the choice is made not to have a bazillion ministries/portfolios. Or putting it another way - as a scientist said recently:

Co-operative Research Centres Association chief executive Tony Peacock said the sector had overreacted. "We have all joked for years about how long ministers' business cards have become," Dr Peacock said.
"I don't read anything sinister into it when the government shortens said titles."

Is your company tax payer funded?

And your expenditure on R&D is similar to ours. But we don't receive any tax payer funded grants to do so.

You make so many assumptions don't you.

Someone has to feed the monkeys.

Is your company tax payer funded?

No - my company is privately owned.

And your expenditure on R&D is similar to ours.

Is that in percentage terms (25%) or real terms ($500,000,000)?

But we don't receive any tax payer funded grants to do so.

Neither do we.

How stupid do you feel right now? No - I'm serious .... I would really like to hear your response 'coz I reckon it will be a bottler!

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Even the ACCC expect power prices to fall once the Carbon Tax is repealed.

Watchdog warns business on power cheating
Well I expect them to fall too, but the point is the exaggerated claims about the impact. Clearly the tax has some impact but the cynic in me tells me its nowhere near as much as politicians tell us and the price fall wont be much either.

On the other question about governments claims, lets face it, all politicians lie, its just what they do. They know that
a) we want to hear that things will get better, but
b) we wont hold them to account when they don't.

Truthful politicians don't get far. Hard to forget that Hewson promised a GST and got thrown out for it, Howard lied and promised we wouldn't get one and then implemented, he got to serve for multiple terms. Frankly I think we get what we deserve if we let poiticians lie and get away with it and this is a complaint against both parties, they do it because we dont only allow it, in my opinion our actions actually positively encourage it.

Just so I have this clear in my own head Moody - are you saying that figure of $500 million is per year and in US$ or AUD$? Given that BHP-Billiton spends about $250 million US on R&D throughout their entire operations that is a lot of R&D. I realise that you may be unable to name your employer but are you able to provide any clues? With that level of R&D we must be talking about a major pharmaceutical company?

Just wondering if I have misunderstood your previous posts.

Why? You are still making assumptions that because I am querying the worth of CSIRO in $$ terms, that I don't believe in R&D.
Believe me, no one on this forum will make me feel stupid. ;)

So maybe they can then use that money to make up for their less successful efforts such as scientifically approving the introduction of the Cane Toad in 1935-though it was just the CSIR then.
